It's A Sad Day Today :-(

I just want to share this story - my mother had her aortic valve replaced when she was in her 70s. This was due to childhood illness that had scarred her valve and over the years the valve deteriorated.

Anyway, after the surgery she went through an outpatient cardiac rehab program and I am not kidding - she was more fit after that than she had been most of her adult life.

The artificial valves have been on the market for a long, long time now and I recall they told us that, even in a younger person, they are made to be durable to last the rest of a person's lifetime.

I was also surprised at how little discomfort my mother reported after her surgery, and we were told that was quite common to have little or no pain and minimal discomfort.

I hope this bone marrow thing is negative and not involved, but so glad they are checking for it.

Damn opportunistic bacteria! I hate that these kinds of infections are becoming much more common. A friend of mine just went through endocarditis this past winter, being treated medically now, but probably will need a valve sometime in the future.

That sounds like what my dad told me he had as a child. Some illness that scarred his valve.

My mother had scarlet fever and the Spanish Flu at the same time. This was in 1918, at the end of WWI, and populations were decimated by the Spanish Flu, worldwide. Healthy people left food outside sick people's homes. Not many dared even enter inside to take care of the sick. Sometimes there was one person in the household who was well enough to take care of everyone. One of my hospice patients recalled, at age 5, being the only one in the household who wasn't sick with the Spanish Flu and he never got it. He took care of everyone, and did the farm chores, and got them through.

It was likely the scarlet fever that left my mother's aortic valve scarred. It sounded like a harmless murmur, to the doctor, and didn't affect her breathing or stamina until she was in her 70s, so she was lucky there.

It sounds like Cluey's situation is more acute. Most of those stem from infections seeded into the bloodstream from dental problems or procedures, or sometimes a simple skin infection can enter through a break in the skin. They will probably have a good clue by the type of bacteria found as to how it started and can then take steps to prevent it from happening again.

The Mayo Clinic patient info websites are really good. I use them a lot when people call me for advice and information. They seem real complete and yet don't overwhelm with too much info.

Hello Everyone,

I figure we are due for an update, unfortunately this update is not a positive one. Cherrie is bed-ridden and has been for the majority of this past week. She spends the most of her days sleeping. Cherrie is in pain although she is choosing not to medicate herself too often because wants to be clear headed. She is now struggling to stay alive, but still unbelievably strong in spirit and even maintains her sense of humor. I have not heard her complain once of anything. A smile from her peaks out once in a while, but the jaundice has returned and her food intake is barely existent. Despite her current state, my sister still looks beautiful to me. The family is asking that you would please continue to think and pray for Cherrie but visits are now restricted to immediate family during Cherrie's last days to allow for her peace and comfort. Thank you to everyone who continue to show their love and support to Cherrie and the rest of the family during this difficult journey.

Peace and Love,

Michael

the good things are that Clueys shakes seem to be under control with a drug for the most part but the pain at the core of the shakes is still very present. :frown:

and the fever has subsided to normal levels.

He gets sponge baths daily.

Probably a silly question: Knowing Cluemaster as I do - wouldn't the shakes stop if he stopped getting spongebaths from the nurses? :goofy:

I'm beside myself right now

Brad just came out of the throat test .......... I've been told that our Brad's heart is being deeply attacked by this bacteria that they can't wait to let the bacteria die with antibiotics over a few weeks. He is scheduled to be moved to St. Joes tomorrow and prepping for Heart Surgery on Wednesday! OMG hardly anytime to take any of this in. :frown:

Although we don't know each other that well, we've been posting in Daisy's forum and in mrmmmikey's forum for awhile now, and found him very witty and friendly..

Healing thoughts and prayers will be with him, through the surgery and his recovery and I hope to see him back posting his jokes real soon..

Thank you to Mr.Z for letting me know..that was really sweet of you.

I just dropped by to get more news..and I see that they've scheduled the surgery for tomorrow..It's alot to take in all at once I do agree, and yet on the flip side of things, the sooner he gets it done, the less time he gets to worry about it.

What kind of music does he like?

The making of a CD is a lovely idea. Everyone could put in one of their songs and when that songs plays he will know that we are thinking of him...

"HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN" by the Eagles is also a good one.

"FOOTLOOSE" by Kenny Loggins is also a nice one...

Again it all depends on what he likes..

And this goes to anyone who speaks to him..

PLEASE GIVE HIM MY REGARDS...AND TO GET BETTER REAL SOON...

Thanks

Hi Guys,

Leelabell wanted me to post and let you guys know what has been going on with her.

About 3 weeks ago she was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkins Lymphoma. She is currently going through Chemo for the next few months but in her words "I'm determined to be well by the beginning of the year".

She is feeling pretty good so far and has a wonderfully positive attitude.

So send the positive thoughts in her direction!!!
