Kcogrn? I musta missed him! Was great seeing some cooler crew medallion hunters and cooler crew cachers out there! Had fun caching and eating!

Penny and I went to the puppet show thing later at Hidden Falls. That was different. I thought it was good. If you go, sit towards the front / right side for the best show. Dress warm.

Cool 'Finding Minnesota' story on 'CCO tonight about caching all the state parks. Great exposure!
Sun, 12/28/2008 - 9:15 PM Permalink
KC0GRN

The only bummer about that story is it's getting exposure at the end of the current program.

I'm sure next years will be interesting, but now that I've visited all of the state parks this year, I'm not really interested in doing that again in one year, if ever. Unless they offered a reward worth the price of gas and wear and tear on my vehicle, lol. Don't get me wrong, I was happy to do it the first time because I'd never done so, and always wanted to.

While some parks are worth an extra visit or three (and I do intend on revisiting those), others didn't seem so interesting. A few have me wonder why they even exist as state parks, and one seemed to be little more than a wayside rest (those of you who've been there know the one I mean).

Regardless, it's fun to explore them all if you've never done so, you get to see most of the state by doing so, and if you've never done that, you are indeed missing out on some very beautiful areas of the state.

I found my first cache today with the help of Ian and MNMikey! I might be hooked, what is the website that lists the different caches in MN and can anyone recommend any good reasonably priced GPS devices for a beginning geocacher?

www.geocaching.com

A good, cheaper GPS is a blue Legend - it has some basemaps. Too bad they didn't hook you on this before Dec 31st, someone could have given you a coupon for 40% off. New, that one is about $150 at Best Buy and Target.

Is that the color one?

tesser

No - but that's getting pricier for color. I spose you could look for a used HCx or better and try to get a GPSr in the price range of a new Legend.

Hey Art, welcome to the world of caching. I found that one today while down in the Hollow digging for some real treasure...

I am partial to garmin brands of GPSr stuff, and would suggest the Legend HCx, nice size that fits the hand well, good accuracy, color maps, routable feature for getting around, and not too terribly expensive. LOT cheaper than some of the new fancy ones.

Have fun on the hunt and check out some of Ian's events, and you can meet others cachers and see what sort of gps they use, and shoot the breeze about caching.

If you really want to find one cheap check ebay or pawn shops. Although double check the prices and compare sometimes they overprice them and you get a new one for almost the same price.

CerealKiller

dont buy them from Pawnshops!!!! I have looked at pawnshops up and down the price you pay is the same IF NOT MORE some times then what you cant get it for NEW!!!

the big reason is they dont know what they are getting and buy them for to Much!! and then get stuck with them!!! and also the fact that half the time they are hot!!!

And why deal with a place that when you need cash they wont give you anything but A CRACK head can walk in with something HE just Jacked and sell it for a ton of money!! thats weak!!! they mess with the hard working fok Like ME!!

For anyone whose now become intrigued with geocaching.

I might suggest doing some Posen caches in Roseville. His are funny and creative and usually not to difficult of a hide. And they're close to one another so you can do 10-15 in a day.

Plus he's just so darn fluffy and cute. :goofy:

It is a cool one, and a really neat spot. But, I would suggest waiting until spring to check it out. Things are a bit frozen right now, was down in there at clue 3 thinking hummmm...

It was pretty frozen when we went down there for the first time. I would think in the spring it would get pretty wet...right now it would have the really cool ice waterfall there still.

jREST

Yep, still real frozen, and that waterfall all frozen is really cool to see. Also seems like a lot of water running down a side of the "canyon" that is all frozen on the east side, was really cool to see that as well.

I tried to go in there late winter/early spring once. The ice flow at the entry was quite big, so I waited until late April and it was OK.

I stopped by here on my visit to Crosby today, I was going to drop a geocoin off but I had forgotten my pickax. I don't think this cache is going to show itself until warmer weather. I got some pictures of the frozen falls though.

In the first link it's weird I almost expect to see myself in those pictures hahahaha. Someone please drag me outta here when the weather is good for going down there so I can go get my first cache. I won't go do any caching until I manage to go back down to Crosby.
