2013 - Cherokee Heights Park

Actually... I guess the more I think of it, it very well could be Crosby park. That place is flippin huge! If they pick a tree in the middle of the woods as usual, it'll take someone forever to find it, even knowing it's in that park....

The last time it was at Crosby, White Christmas was in clue 2. The song White Christmas is also from the movie Holiday Inn. If they are being straight with the whole reprise thing, this clue is very much like that one. Unless it is a bluff.

Just getting caught up now. I found the movie Holiday Inn. It's at the 29 minute mark the song Happy Holidays is sung. It's a duet between Bing Crosby and Virginia Dale (or Jim Hardy and Lila Dixon as they are called in the movie). Crosby and Dale are more likely the pair than anyone else, but it's hard to count out Astaire, Berlin, Como or a mess of others who have direct connections to that song.

The Battlecreek hunt; Clue 3:

A chestnut gentle makes me sentimental

For those glorious stories of yore

Of the days in the glen, when men were men.

Och! Have I become a prodigious bore?

Etc.

PP explanation:

"Chestnut gentle ... refer to an old song called 'Flow Gently Sweet Afton' based on a poem from Robert Burns; it suggests Upper Afton and Lower Afton roads, which border Battle Creek. For you Treasure Hunt history buffs, a similar reference was used in Clue 10 in 1970...."

This makes me think that "reprise" could be a past clue used again n 2013, like this Battle Creek hunt.

yes, "bluff" and "red herring" make me pause at Crosby. UNLESS, like I said, the red herring is a red herring. It's at Crosby afterall because we think Crosby is a red herring. :pbpt:

Battle Creek and Conway are the two main parks in this Holiday Inn's area, right? Any others close by there?

Puck = Hockey

The Hockey lockout was a reprise of the 2005 strike.

2005 it was hidden in ...

Crosby

(but it is not there because of the silt fences)

most likely puck refers the medallion.

But I would keep an eye out for hockey rinks.

going to BC today(the rec center has nice warm bathrooms) and como (after digging the conservatory is a great place to warm up.

Basic Conway Park history:

Our area was fully annexed into the city of St. Paul by 1887, and our neighborhoods started to emerge. The Conway area was named for Charles R. Conway, a journalist who drifted west, through Minnesota and on to Los Angeles, where he managed a newspaper during the Civil War. Conway, who owned a lot of land in St. Paul, can be seen in many photographs still in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society.

afton park is just east of battle creek. (google maps shows it as battle creek but the sign at the park says afton park)

What are silt fences?

Conway Street: Replacing First Street and Levee Street in 1872; named for Charles R. Conway, a Civil War journalist; one of the first Minnesotans to migrate to CA. Aquired real estate in St Paul, but not much money. "Conway knows how to make money, but he can't get it because he won't lie and steal."

I believe silt fences are those orange mesh-like plastic "fences" put in to keep construction muck from going into sensitive nature areas...

I don't remenber if this got mentioned last night but at Gabe's they were in fact selling tickets again. Also the paper didn't arrive until almost 11:15.

We'll be there again tonight. And in case anyone forgot, today is my birthday, so if you happen to find the medallion today, and you don't know what to get me for my birthday, well I'm just saying that would be something that I don't already have.

don't you just love how they tell you about red herrings to make you double and triple think things and no matter what you do IT COULD be the red herring they talked about so nothing is safe. AHHH! Need clue 3 already lol

OK... who was at Ian's cache bash on Saturday that can fill us in on construction, silt fences and what not at Crosby?

The woods there are f'n HUGE (the entire park is over 700 acres).. I remember this clearly because in 05 I think think I mapped every flippin deer trail and stump. I was shocked how close it actually was from the path and the parking lot. I actually had been digging there towards the end only because I was going over the unpicked areas everyone had missed, but for a few days I was out in no man's land.

Holiday Inn the movie goes through a bunch of holidays: Christmas, New Years, Easter, Valentines Day, Washington's Birthday, even Independence Day.

Crosby Park is huge, and the CW like that. Plus it's connected to Hidden Falls.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and maybe the word BLUFF in the 1st clue is the red herring and is meant to make us doubt any simple obvious clue explanations. Even by hinting they are going to make it harder (reprise from last year) tends to make us gloss over the obvious and make it more tricky. As much as we like to overthink everything.....KISS method- Occam's razor theory usually works majority of the time.

BTW... silt fences are black mesh panels that allow water through but not silt and sediment.

As someone mentioned earlier, Holiday Inn could be a reference to what it's hidden on or in...not where it's at. Having said that, I think Crosby has good potential as we have lost a lot of snow cover in more exposed parks. All of the woods down there could easily hold a hidden medallion, snow or not.

No construction, it was finished by November. Fences, I don't know about. Doubt that would rule out the Park. Plenty of room elsewhere.

The road that used to go further back, now ends at the Pavilion.

Yes, they can give us the Park now. It's huge.

I agree they could/would give us the park early. At 735 acres it could be anywhere.

They could hide it a little deeper this time and it would be a miracle to stumble upon it early.

Plus the CW knows damn well that even with giving away the park no-one is really going to look the next couple of days with sub zero highs.

Yeah... like it could be attached to a Holiday Inn coaster, key card holder, soap wrapper, paper cover for glass, etc.

The article did say the jeweler who made the medallion changed the shape of it... could be square/oval.

How about the Crosby and Dale pair being references to Crosby Farm and Lilydale--essentially across the river from each other?

I get hesitant when they really imply a park so strongly in clue 2, but being that it is Crosby which is one big forest with minimal landmarks, I can see it. I feel like there is a strong possibility of an anagram given they use the word jumble. I like the famous pair being Crosby and Astaire, and I like that it could have something to do with stairs. I do wonder if it could be by a cross (perhaps of trees) near a flight of stairs.
Mon, 01/21/2013 - 11:28 AM Permalink
Brassmonkey

I agree, mixing and jumble are essentially the same meaning used twice in the same sentence.

There are flights of stairs at crosby.

But... Really.. to pinpoint an area at this time to search... NO way.

If anyone wants to go there to look, take the trail to the north of the pond that follows along the bluffs, I forget exactly where, but there are a few stairs along that trail. Just keep walking it, you'll find them.
