It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.
Treasure Digger
Where's the golf course by Hidden Falls? I think there should be one close by or why would Mom put it in the first clue.
jimt, i was their an hour ago. it is not closed. they dont clost the main part of hidden falls in the winter. go to the northgate, by ford parkway and missippi drive.its the north gate
I also have to say I don't agree with the film angle. "Action" and "Scene" are in two different clues so the connection is strained to begin with. And even if they were meant to go together, so many things have been filmed here, from "The Shining" to "Grumpy Old Men" to "A Simple Plan", how could the writer of the clues have possibly hoped to pinpoint anything with such a reference?
Also, how can anyone say Hidden Falls is due when Phalen, for a park of its size is way overdue? As for the why narrow it down to 3 parks question, why not? It will keep small parks from getting damaged. And as far as I can tell, they haven't given us any idea of where in the park to look. It would take days to comb over all of Phalen or Como or Highland, so its not particularly narrowed down.
Let's toss in Como again. Someone said there's a kid roller coaster there. That would take care of "flying downhill" and don't "get to close to the action" could possibly mean stay away from the bears or animals at the zoo which is an outside attraction.
well with a 10,000 jackpot, their going to throw you off as long as possible. so the paper can make as much money as possible. also legend has it phalen wont have it again due to 1/3 or more is in maplewood. maplewood hates the treasure, i should know. i live hear. theirs a reason it hasnt been here since 83. its that, or their purposely saving it for this aniversary witch i dont buy. they tend to use only about 6 parks now. unless they add mears. but it dont quite fit. thats why i like hidden falls. it fits the clues enough to work, but not enough to throw people off, witch is comon to the first clues. remeber last year? i feel like the only person to never dig in mounds, and only in cherokee.
I'd have to agree with Allisson, and it would take months to find it if this is all we knew. Huge park, much overdue. Don't forget about the Ice Castle there, that was a popular outdoor attraction
yes como has a kiddi coaster. ive had upset stomach from it. (shh dont tell anyone) its just everyear, people say como. and it was just their. i like newell. hidden, and highland.

Another question is how much can you read into the first clues? This always reminds me of the last time it was in Battle Creek Park and the first letter of each clue spelled out B-A-T-T-L-E-C-R-E-E-K-P-A-R-K. If one looks closely enough there may be very good information in the early clues. Last year there was not, but I think its also a function of how big the park is. They make a small park hard to pinpoint. In a large park they give it away early (remember Cuomo without you?) and then the question becomes where in the park? The golf course parks are all large, so they may very well give it away early.
como is not far from enegery park. theirs the energy park movie studios. and can you see a ski jump from battlecreek? their used to be one their back in the day i heard.
Yes you can see the Ski Jump from some parts of Battle Creek. The Ski Jump itself is in Maplewood so maybe they are again saying to stay out of Maplewood.
dont beleave thiers a ski jump their now. in the past thier was. and i just heard you can see the exsisting ski jump outside of st.paul from battelcreek.
If they hid the medallion on the St. Paul side of Phalen, would Maplewood have any grounds to complain since it wasn't on Maplewood property? I don't think you can eliminate Phalen, though its understandable that they wouldn't use it as much as other parks. But why continue to alienate the east-siders?
Hello there. It is I the real ShovelBoy from last year, but since someone took that handle already this year, I am forced to be the shovel master. Now, that aside. I would have to agree to not look to into the early clues. But at this point I am going with Como too. The clues point out several things to me, if I may be so bold as to contradict my above statement about early clues. Flying~could also mean the kids ride that has the little airplanes. In clue 1 there is the bit about don't disturb, this is something often found on animal cages like the ones in the zoo. The words: scene, action, and attraction occur systematically through both clues 1 and 2, these words can be associated with a movie or a play~like the plays held at the Ampitheater or whatever that is called by the lake in Como. Of course there's the already discussed Como Golf Course, which is an instant tie-in......And of course the flying down a hill could mean the ice slide, which was also mentioned. It all looks like Como so far. So either, not by ice slide, near the zoo or not by the zoo, near the ice ride.....however you want to look at it. I don't think it's too off to assume Como at this point....it's a big park!
If you are driving East on 494 between 61 and Lake Drive in woodbury, you will see the Ski Jump on you left. That is all Maplewood, just drive by and look at the street signs all of them have the maple on them. Maplewood is larger than you think. It wraps all the way down there
phalen on st.paul would be good, but hunters will wander to maplewood, and i have faith the pioneerpress is smart enough to think about that, as to not risk maplewood destroying the treasure hunt forever.
You all have great ideas. It is fun to see such enthusiasm.
It seems to me that maybe the paper is just trying to be upfront in these first two clues, because they expect many new hunters who may not know all the rules.
It could be como, because they say stay away from the golf course in clue one, and then in cle two they say stay away from the sliding hills, and the golf course is the sliding hills at como
not bad dave, but i think the press will try to give the local people an advantage. because theirs talk of professionals coming for the 10,000 this year.
No problem, I am still partial to Phalen and with the big dough this year Dave is probably right there are going to be a lot of idiots out there for the first time and wont have any respect for the tradition of the Hunt or the land
I think that the first two clues are warnings as where not to dig. Last year was my first year searching and on the watercooler. I was at Cherokee a lot, and the place was totally destroyed. With the big bucks out there, there is likely to be an increase in the number of people participating. Thus an increased need to try and save land such as golf courses and sledding hills for the kids...
Just thought I would check in to see how many cooler heads still prevail. Also to let you and Cheryl aka the Three Planeteers know that I'm on the side lines this year as we just had a future cooler head the 28th of Dec. Let me know if there is anything I can help with from here.
I guess, if it was there two years ago...that would be the last place anyone would look. and seeing as the pot is an amazing $10,000 with button this year that might be just the tciekt to keep people away until they start throwing the real catchy clues our way.......I don't know.....they do have a knack for writing clues that could applky to just about every park in the 5 state area, but from an early standpoint it looks like Como....thats all

Medallionhound, what do you think of Hidden Falls?
I also have to say I don't agree with the film angle. "Action" and "Scene" are in two different clues so the connection is strained to begin with. Me and the Medallion Mobile
well their is no course i know of my hidden falls, except a "concourse" see, im not completly sold about "golf" i think "no golf"
Me and the Medallion Mobile

flying downhill; can you see the ski jump from battle creek. dont read to far into the first clues.

Como also has a golf course close by. There's also going to be the big slidding ramp there for the carnival.
Me and the Medallion Mobile

otherwise como fits well.
Another question is how much can you read into the first clues? 05:55pm JAN 25 CAN YOU SEE THE SKI JUMP FROM BATTLE CREEK PARK
So then, does Como fit the part of scene or film, etc.?
Me and the Medallion Mobile
sorry no castle this year. their discussion for next year, if they can keep from aprouching back ruptcy. cuz they lost lots in 92
I've got to go for now. Dinner is calling me. I'll noddle for a while and come back maybe with something new.
Me and the Medallion Mobile
como is not far from enegery park. theirs the energy park movie studios. and can you see a ski jump from battlecreek? their used to be one their back in the day i heard.
It was just at como two years ago!!!
There is a ski jump at battle creek.....

dont beleave thiers a ski jump their now. in the past thier was. and i just heard you can see the exsisting ski jump outside of st.paul from battelcreek.
There are also some great sliding hills in the St. Paul side of Battle Creek. How good are the sliding hill along 61 in Phalen?
The ski jump is nowhere near maplewood!!!
Unless you are thinking of a different one than i am....
Me and the Medallion Mobile
hey i like the part about the ski jump
Drove by the Jump today and scoped out Battle Creek, havn't made it to Phalen yet. probably tomorrow By the way the jump is still there and visible
Me and the Medallion Mobile
the sled hills by 61 and phalen, and loving called "the nipple ripper" their hard, and bumpy, but speed is ok. but i dont think its their.
Me and the Medallion Mobile
where is their a jump in maplewood?

Dave--I agree--
It seems to me theat it is at a park with a course for sure--otherwise they wouldn't have four lines about it!
Crazy hunta--good point....
I'm so in my element. The hunt is on. By the way where is my brain?
Me and the Medallion Mobile
not bad dave, but i think the press will try to give the local people an advantage. because theirs talk of professionals coming for the 10,000 this year.

Don't we all consider ourselfs professionals. (ha ha)
