Discuss the 2005 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt here.
TeamFirstInLine
The First In Line Guys-Jon and MarkWant to say Hi.
I think there leading us right down the path right to the prize. Remember they have nothing else to talk about, because the prize is naked all they can talk about is the park. I just hope its found before the 12 clue, and by someone that loves the hunt, not by someone that just happens to stubble over it.

I will choose to do as I will, and not listen to your suggestion. Thanks for your words but they are not the wisest to push in my direction.
People are never comfortable with the harshest of realities. Nobody comfortably realizes their day-to-day enjoyment harms others. I mean, we live in America, ffs.
What I am talking about is directly relevant to the tons of other talk that happens about the hunt.
In the old days, people ignored their dayjobs to make discussion and everyone everywhere filtered all pertinent information to the CC.
Again, I challenge you to react to what I'm saying. Don't feed me "like it or leave it," as I'll turn it right back at you. If you don't like what I'm saying, feel free to ignore it, but don't you dare suggest that I censor myself.
lisa612: I am here because I value the way it used to be, and I am willing to put up a fight for it, be it a yearly stand on a soapbox that falls on deaf ears or not.
New users here do NOT know the truth. They deserve to know and the proponents of the way things are at this time deserve to be put on the spot about it.
I'll say first off I was never a huge fan of the invitational thread, although by the same token I don't disagree with it 100%. Along with the good aspects of the Cooler Crew, there were (and are) some bad ones too. Some people come in to post simply to cause a disruption and be obnoxious. Consequently some people enjoy being able to read a thread where that doesn't go on. Other people dislike the idea that there are people who get ideas from the Cooler Crew and don't contribute any in return. So generally the idea is that anyone who posts sincerely would get invited to the other thread. Unfortunately that process is less than perfect, especially when things are getting heated in the hunt. Although even then I don't completely agree because so many people do start out as lurkers and then start posting once they become comfortable with the environment. That's what I did.
I won't argue with the cliquish thing. I saw at least one person get chased away from here because someone *thought* they were someone else posting under a fake name and a bunch of people ended up being kind of rude to her. I've seen a little more judging of who's ok and who's not ok. On the other hand, when things go beyond simple over-the-internet cooperation on a 12 day hunt and develop into friendships and personal relationships, yes people will get more picky about who they associate with. These kinds of things are always easier in the beginning when everyone is on equal ground. Once time goes by and some people have spent more time with each other and gotten to know each other better, it's inevitable that some strata will develop.
Personally I like to get to know the new people and though I'm not the warmest person in the world, I try to be welcoming on at least an intellectual level. I've also shared pretty much all my ideas on this thread whether people listen to them or not.
As for the format, I'd have to see the alternatives to truly say if one is better or not than this. I don't like the threaded approach personally because I lose my sense of timing. Did this person say this before x happened or after? Granted you can figure it out, but it's not always intuitive. And I think no matter what the structure, you will always have useless chatter developing everywhere eventually such that you still need to sort through everything to find the useful stuff.
It is quite possible though that the location and format of this will change by next year with this site's future somewhat uncertain. I guess we will see what happens.
Kitch: I was there briefly to meet and greet, and to sober cab. :)
The pre-dig gig does not an ONLINE community make. Those who attended do not account for the thousands of people who peek around the corner at what has been happening here over the span of the hunt. Word of mouth has brought wisdom beyond the years of a few of the old timers I've seen pre-2000 that were brave enough to chat about some of the talk that had been happening.
I'm talking about people who have been hunting for this thing for 25 years, hunting with their sons and grandsons, who were shown the cooler crew site, and wanted to talk about it.
That doesn't happen anymore for any number of reasons. It could, and I valued it when it did happen.
Since it's a family hunt - I doubt they would hide it in a "naked" mag - but it sure would be funny...
I can't believe they would just lay it out there. Hmm - wonder if it's brown leaf colored so it blends in - maybe it looks like a old nasty left chocolate bar - or fake dog poop - yeah - then no one would touch it.Â
I am in complete agreement with Allison-I freely post all that my brain can noodle never holding back, we know until the last clue the puck is a needle in a hay stack--and finding it for me isn't all about the money, it is the challenge, the excitment, the commaraderie, the meeting of like minds, enjoying nature at its finest and worst(cold) and getting the exercise. I have been hunting this puck as a toddler native to Minnesota. Haven't found it yet-walked over it many a year. I feel the internet chat has really opened up the hunt and like minds can meet. I have felt left out in previous years by the "cooler heads" but that doesn't bother me any more Matt. Get thicker skinned and keep posting even if they don't people like you and Allison and others will carry on. If you can technically improve the sight I say "go for it." The timed response is slow and we can always use someone with the time, money and technical knowledge to improve our sight!! We love ya man!
For the record, I don't believe Matt is complaining about anything he simply personally doesn't care for (except maybe the format), but rather he's trying to encourage everyone to aspire to something better.
I was never a lurker.. But I bet if Matt was over here, he would understand why things are the way they are. I love the crew the way it is now. They opened their arms to me when I didn't know a damn thing about hunting. They accepted my wife just as quickly.
You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Meanwhile the whole point of being here is for the hunt (and the friends). I think we all forget that from time to time. Lurkers and Crew alike.
But in the end the Crew will still be here and friends will remain. and the bitter and lost will be forgotten.

If you have something positive to give to the hunting community then by all means go do it. Put some work into a resource that others can use to make the hunt even more enjoyable.
I've always believe in that idea. Thats why I do what I can to support the hunters that do.

Thank you for your response. I understand and embrace the notion of abuse prevention and moderation. These are things that can be accomplished without segregation, but a number of established forum programming rules, from granting simple moderators to temporarily ban posting privileges, up to and including tools given to the users themselves. Realize that there are far more popular online communities with far greater childish users, and they exist in relative harmony because of forward actions taken to enable the community to remain public.
I do not argue the value of the fellowship created from this event. I believe it is important, but the fellowship created here simply does not have a place controlling the community in general. It doesn’t, and it shouldn’t have, and it has done so, to my dismay. I admire your open honesty about your feelings about the private thread, since you are a major component of the vocal knowledge of the community.
This leads into my statement that the cooler crew was originally a public forum, and if you were uncomfortable sharing your thoughts and ideas with those who will only absorb them, you usually kept quiet. However, I believe I still speak for the general public that the minds brought together over the cooler crew simply wanted the cooler crew to have an impact on a winner’s success in the hunt. Those who are grossly competitive about their ideas have a warped interpretation on the actual value of any single idea in the perspective of the community, and people eventually realize that.
I also understand your concern about a threaded approach. I come from a long advocacy of text conversation and I hold a strong distaste for it in a general sense. However, again, it’s a question of the capacity of the framework over thousands of users, and a more robust basis of forum management is nearly a necessity from a technical perspective. Webservers can’t individually handle thousands of people reloading a website without wetting the bed without drastic measures of implementing caching services, and other things you shouldn’t have to think about when considering a simple online community.
Think of it this way. This entire “forum” is just a large thread. Ever read Slashdot? Similar and ultimately customizable things are possible. Bad commentary gets moderated down to the point where you must actively click links to read bad posts. Good commentary gets rated well so it is easily seen. Users can determine a threshold to ONLY see good posts upon browsing.
Another argument towards the good of a multithreaded forum is to give a place for the “hi, hello” posts, and to enable off topic discussions to exist without acting as a detriment to the ultimate goal of the project. Again, forums let loose without checks will always decay, and other administrivia needs to be had to even conceive an alternative. If this is something that interests anyone, please let me know.
What do you think about the folk music connection "the Eddies on the River?" Also the Minnesota Folk Music Festival Fundraiser and Silent Auction was just held January 30 at the Summit Brewing Company
For the record, I don't believe Matt is complaining about anything he simply personally doesn't care for (except maybe the format), but rather he's trying to encourage everyone to aspire to something better.
Matt's right in a sense, we do segregate. But it's only this thread, and it's only for the hunt, and it's not as if THX is really picky about who gets let in. If someone says "let them in" they get let in, basically...
My opinion is that it's Eric or Jake. These guys have been dead set on throwing a wrench into things thinking that it's funny, and this is just a new tact - that it's a cohesive argument is interesting but it's just another distraction. Really, if the guy doesn't like it why does he keep posting?
Done sloggin again. Sorry to bring up Fountain Cave again, but I have been down in that area once for a geocache, everytime I've driven past the plaque out on shepard it's been covered with snow, so I'm guessin nobody's looked at it lately. Doubtin the medallion is there, but I saw where the old cave entrance was. Pretty much looks like a bluff area now, overgrown and all, the only way I knew it was the cave entrance is from the concrete culvert with water flowing into the river. Quite sad actually.

Stay if you like and leave it you don't. No drama required.
But don't be angry about it. The madallion is a hunters passion. Where you talk about it is up to the hunter.
The hunt must go on :)

As I was walking,
That ribbon of highway,
I saw above me
That endlessskyway,
I saw below me
That golden valley.
This land was made for you and me.
you can see the downtown skyway/skyline from the path entrance (at the end pf the parkinglot)

Kitch (if you eventually read through the ignore)-
I have far greater resources to donate than money to the cooler crew. It is, however, up to the cooler crew to realize that.
