I am getting all my info second-hand, so can't be sure of the story. I did think Steve sounded sincere. He would like to take the dog himself, but sounds like maybe there is a wife in the picture saying they have enough dogs already. I was reassured after I talked to him, that I don't think he will let the dog go to any shelter, but will find a home for him.
I was gonna show the dog to my girls and see what they think but I think they really want a puppy.
I am actually out numbered 3 to 1 and if I dont find a dog that I like soon than they are gonna go pick one without me!! I've held them back for about 2 years now since Taiga died. Ultimately I get stuck taking care of it so I should at least like it a little.
We had hamsters and guinea pigs, when we were growing up. We were not allowed to have a dog or cat or bird due to "hygiene concerns" on my mother's part. I'm not sure why she thought rodents were ok, in that regard.
The hamsters seemed to die rather quickly. We were careful with them, fed and watered them, changed their cage linings regularly. One hamster's death was our "fault" - my brother set it on the piano keys to see what it would do, and it ran inside the piano and fell down inside. We were able to get it out, but it had been injured and it died.
The guinea pigs were cool and seemed sturdier. We had them for a long time. They knew us and would make guinea pig noises when we approached their cages.
My friend's son and his wife moved in with her, and they have guinea pigs. They let them wander on the carpet in their room, and they peed on everything. She has had trouble getting the odor out, now that the "kids" have moved out.
We used cedar shavings in the cage, and we didn't let the guinea pigs run around free in the house, so we never had odor problems with ours.
Ours were the short-haired variety.
I'll bet there are some teachers here who could tell you more about hamsters and gerbils! Seems they are popular classroom pets.
Not going for the pig just yet and the thought of the hamster dying isn't all bad if it turns out to be more than she can handle. Like the cat with whom I take care of even though she would definitely take care of it. Swear to God daddy! :eyeroll:
I'll ask whitney if she's willing to give up her books on hamsters.
she has lots of advice on them. What I learned...NEVER get the hamster wet EVER. not even to whipe their butts off. When the books say it, they mean it! They get hypothermia quickly and die that night. If they live long enough than they will probably die from cancer from all the in-breeding done to sell them at pet stores. TreasureChest and Ares hamster has cateracs! how the heck?
Hamsters are night creatures...so when you go looking for THE ONE, look closer to evening when they are more awake so you can see their character. And when I say night creatures I mean your new pet will run on that wheel like Stoli was after her for dear life! It can be loud on the wheel so bedrooms are not a good place to keep their cage. You shouldn't dismantle the wheel because they need the excersize and they usually do most of their running at night.
I thought the white sand was one of the fun things to buy for the hamster to roll around in.
I got attached to a couple of our hamsters because like you cm, the kid swears she will feed it and clean out the cage ... every night I actually would mix the bagged hamster food with food in our fridge... lettuce, carrots, walnuts&pecans(any kind of nuts really), cucumbers, brocolli, green beans, fruits (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries). I would break them up in to tiny pieces that would fit in the hamsters hands. It was truely adorable! some hamsters will turn their back to you because they don't want you to watch them eat.
I would play with the hamster nightly so she/he would get some attention (humans and pets can die or get depressed from not being touched).
Usually I would help whitney clean out the cage because it really is alot of work for a little girl to be expected to do on their own.
One of the funniest hamster stories has to be when whitney got worried as she was holding her last hamster.... she said she though she had cancer because she could feel bulges coming from under the hamsters backend.... I held the little guy and had to explain that she had her first boy hamster. :ooh:
Here's my hamster nightmare. We got two hamsters from the grade school and were assured they were both male. Guess what? Those hamsters reproduce like.......hamsters! We tried to separate them into two cages by sex. Guess what? We ended up with over 40 hamsters in the end and finally gave them to a pet store for food for their snakes.
Oh, and they sometimes eat their young.
Well, I don't know much about hamsters and gerbils, but the boys have a guinea pig. They are very easy to take of (I should know, I do most of the caring) and have great personalities. When they need something or are happy they will let you know with their chatter. (kind of like a baby, i guess) They are very active at night and love to be held. Ours is a little hyperactive and can throw bedding about 5 feet when it's running circles in it's cage.
My biggest worry is the life span of a guinea pig. When the boys head off to college, we could still be left caring for the pig.
I dreamt that I was getting out of bed and could hear a dog panting and getting up from their little doggie bed. It was Reba! And soon, Frodo was up and panting too! The two of them followed me out of the bedroom as I went to start my day. I petted them and talked to them, and it was one of those dreams that has that "other" quality that makes you know its not just a dream. We really were together again for those moments.
top bar if you have it added!! it is a ad on!! they are right after the address bar on mine!! it has a smiley face with a 4 in it!! then you just click on that it brings up a side bar and you go thorw that list to find what you want!! then you can get a ton of them!! got to love the state bird!!
Eags - do a search in Firefox for smilies. You will find one called Smiley Xtra 4.
That is the one I have installed in Firefox and the possibilities seem endless. Tons of smilies!
I just reposted that from Icesis' folder. Thought it would be better here.
The download creates a smiley icon on the toolbar. When you click on that, a sidebar opens and there are many, many categories to choose from and within each category, there are many, many smilies to choose from. Have fun!
Once you find one, select from the toolbar on top of that sidebar the Insert HTML code.
From that same toolbar, you can select options with the little down arrow next to the smiley and then select the double click option of inserting using the HTML code that works here.
Once you have done that, all you need to do is double click on the smiley file of your choice and it will insert at the end of whatever your current text is within the message box here.
Cute doggie though Eags

Ali wants a hamster. Does anyone have any experience with these rodents? How about gerbils? What's the difference anyway?

Good for you. I'm glad you had the visit. I never believed in them until the other day. Very cool! And not scary at all. In fact, the very opposite
