I was just playing around when I said he was Alfie. I don't think it's Alfie either. Alfie would have snapped when I said "Come here and give daddy some loving.". Alfie HATED when I flirted with him.

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,

HE LIVED ALL ALONE,

IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF

PLASTER AND STONE.

_________

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY

WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,

AND TO SEE JUST WHO

IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

________

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,

A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,

NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,

NOT EVEN A TREE.

________

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,

JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,

ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES

OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

__________

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,

AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,

A SOBER THOUGHT

CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

________

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,

IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,

I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,

ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

_______

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,

SILENT, ALONE,

CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR

IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

________

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,

THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,

NOT HOW I PICTURED

A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

________

WAS THIS THE HERO

OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?

CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,

THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

________

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES

THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,

OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS

WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,

THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,

AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE

A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

________

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM

EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,

BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,

LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

________

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER

HOW MANY LAY ALONE,

ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE

IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

________

THE VERY THOUGHT

BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,

I DROPPED TO MY KNEES

AND STARTED TO CRY.

________

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED

AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,

"SANTA DON'T CRY,

THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

________

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,

I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,

MY LIFE IS MY GOD,

MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS."

________

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER

AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,

I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,

I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

_________

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,

SO SILENT AND STILL

AND WE BOTH SHIVERED

FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

_________

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE

ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,

THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR

SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,

WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,

WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,

IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,

AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,

AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.

The idea that the Bush administration is somehow stingy with the VA is simply absurd. The VA budget has increased by about a third, going from $48 billion a year to $64 billion a year. This year, the VA will provide educational assistance to more than 400,000 people, and guarantee home loans of another 300,000 people, with the total value of about $40 billion.

Thanks Luv. He is definitely the cutest kid on the planet and that's not just because I am the grandfather.

I told my mom that I am too young to be a grandfather. She told me that she is too young to be a great-grandmother. My grandma said she was too young to be a great-great grandmother. I got to get a picture of our 5 generations before it gets too late. I have really been blessed with a healthy family.

Kerry's actions in Vietnam were heroic, but his actions upon his return were inexcusable. Kerry associated with the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, a rabid anti-war group that defamed United States soldiers and often protested under the banner of the Viet Cong.

I hope that at least
SOME of you watched ABC "Primetime" Report the other night, on the absolute-truth about some VA Hospitals, and the continuing fight that Veterans have to pursue as they ask for
Good Treatment at VA Hospitals,
from Clevelend to Florida to Temple Texas...?

I hope you saw the men who are
tied to hand rails, all day long, so that they won't tip-over? I hope you saw how some men are
killed BY the very system they counted on to heal them? I hope you took the time to watch, so that you could see that what I have been screaming about for years is
TRUE, and that the VA system is in short supply of caring staff, MONEY,
Good Administrators and
crucial good-leadership at the TOP, (Mr. Principi???) and then help to try to STOP the madness that IS the VAMC system???

Lastly, I hope those of you who have supported sending our young men and women into wars, will also see the absilute-neccessity of giving them ALL
quality Health Care, when they return to us... with their broken bodies, and then YEARS LATER, when their wounds again begin to take a toll on their health???

I truly hope you all watched that story.

Just a matter of a missing space between the name and the hyphen. You don't suppose it's Bill's old nemesis Sloop, do you?

April 8 — Fourteen years ago, an ABCNEWS hidden-camera investigation ignited a firestorm about conditions and competence inside Veterans Administration hospitals.

Recently, there have been new stories of misdiagnosis, disastrous management and deficient care at some of the nation's 162 facilities.

At a hospital near Cleveland, an ABCNEWS hidden-camera investigation found bathrooms filthy with what appeared to be human excrement. Supply cabinets were in disarray, with dirty linens from some patients mixed in with clean supplies, or left in hallways on gurneys.

At a neighboring facility, examining tables had dried blood and medications still on them. In several areas, open bio-hazardous waste cans were spilling over. Primetime obtained internal memos documenting that the equipment used to sterilize surgical instruments had broken down — causing surgical delays and possible infection risks.

With 130,000 young American men and women putting their lives at risk in Iraq today, these conditions are particularly relevant. While current soldiers are treated in military hospitals, when they leave the service and need treatment, many will seek care at Veterans Affairs (as the Veterans Administration is now known) hospitals.

"Once you come back to be a veteran, it's like a black hole, you know — nothing," former Army Sgt. Vannessa Turner told ABCNEWS.
Turner was stricken with a mysterious illness while on duty in Iraq this past year. She retired from the military on medical grounds, and when she reported to a VA hospital for treatment, doctors scheduled her for an appointment six months later.

Veterans who responded to a survey by the American Legion in 2003 said it took an average of seven months to get a first appointment at a VA hospital. In some hospitals, patients have waited as long as two years.

In 1999, Jack Christensen, a former army sergeant who served in the Korean War, was admitted to the VA hospital in Temple, Texas, with pneumonia, and ended up staying three years.

AND that, is only a small part of the story.

ALL Veterans,
should give a shit.

ALL of us, should FIGHT to make this system WORK.
It is OUR responsibility.

I didn't even know there was such a report going to be on, however, that is why I am going to bote for our president's re-election. As the VFW Commander-in-Chief James N. Goldsmith said in 2002, "A preceding decade of flat and even deficit budgets for VA has placed the system on the brink of disaster." linkI do not wish to return to such failures of a Democrat's administration.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi has said that President Bush is seeking a record budget of $67.7 billion in the fiscal year 2005 budget for the VA, a $5.6 billion increase in budget authority, primarily targeted for health care and disability compensation. link

I do not wish to return to the days when the Republican congress must save the VA budget from what at the time was called a "disasterous Clinton/Gore budget". link

Hmmm. 700k Joe.

Rick,

I'll take a shot at answering your questions. I think you beleive that Conservatives, Republicans etc. are against any taxation. I think taxes are nessecary and a part of our nation. I just disagree with how it's spent most of the time. Generally you'll find that conservatives are in favor of increasing military and veterans pay as well as for things like infastructure etc. There are many many programs that I think Bush has spent waaay to much on and I don't like it one bit. V.A and Military are not one of them and I'm glad he's spending record amounts on them. Talk to me about his immigration ideas, the arts funding, edcation spending etc and there are many ares I am not happy about at all, this just isn't one of them.

May I ask you if you are upset by the spending levels being high ?

Does it keep me up at night? -- no.

If there's revenue steam to pay, it's not a problem.

We can all debate "arts funding and education spending" but how much are you really talking about. I don't think there's a $5.6 billion "arts funding" increase floating around out there.

THX 1138

Sorry Dan, but the FACT is, that the VA's Budget has been in decline and at the mercy of REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED Congress for 2o Years, and THEY have always been the problem.

For Proof, I suggest you look at Mr. Tom Delay's obstructionist VA Policy BLOCKS and CUTS, including the reductions he has FORCED upon the system within the last 3 years.

Lastly, GDUbbya is NOT doing Veterans any favors at The VA, he has NOT increased their Budget to the levels they need, since the levels he has proposed are still FAR AND AWAY less than they WOULD BE, had the people in the Congress and the White House KEPT PACE WITH INFLATION and VA REQUESTS,
ever since 1980.

Don't put words in my mouth. K?

The "Conservative" agenda, is to END the VA-System and that process has already begun,
IN EARNEST.

A record increase is now a cut. And congress was controlled by Republicans for 20 years ? Damn, somebody should have told congress.

Fri, 04/02/2004 - 10:49 AM Permalink
Luv2Fly

That's right, Luv. Not only that, but by forcing more money into the VA than the Clinton/Gore budget wanted and by adding record increases now, the Republicans are trying to "END the VA-System and that process has already begun, IN EARNEST."

Fri, 04/02/2004 - 10:52 AM Permalink
THX 1138

Yeah, right...

CUTBACKS, are
CUTS.

An "Increase" that is LESS than the system NEEDS, is NOT sufficient and the VA has NOT improved under
Goober Bush, and in fact it is WORSE than EVER.

But of course, you "experts" that
NEVER GO THERE know better than I do...most certainly!
