I have been in deep discussion about Grocery Stores (their customer service, who has the best selection, carts and grocery bags) with my friends today. I know, we are an odd bunch. I wonder if you can help me out. I heard that grocery bags originally were invented here in St Paul, do you know?
Thanks,

Hello,
Looks like this may be what your looking for:
the Deubner Shopping Bag
Walter H. Deubner ran an old-style grocery store in St. Paul,
and he was looking for a way to give his
business a boost. By careful observation, he noticed that
his customers purchases were limited by what they
could conveniently carry home. So he set about devising
a way to help them buy more purchases at one time.
It took him four years to develop the right solution:
a prefabricated package, inexpensive, easy to use-and
strong enough to carry alot of groceries.
The package consisted of a paper bag with cord running
through it forstrength.
He patented his product and within three years, by 1915,
was selling over a million shopping bags a year.
Today you may use brown paper bags with cord or paper handles.
My parents have been shopping at the Aldi in Sheboygan, WI for a few years. That one isn't the least bit ghetto. My mom swears by the price of their green/yellow/red peppers. And, since Sheboygan is pretty small driving to different grocery stores isn't a big deal.
I knew the answer but looked up the details... I was talking to the person who posts it on our website and she said she wanted to post it online so I had to come up with the question via YOU GUYS!
I've been reading Ask The Historian questions and answers since you posted that link, and I have a question. Did West Side General Hospital become Riverview Hospital or vice versa, and when did the name change occur?
I see West Side General listed in response to someone asking about hospitals in St. Paul in 1945 and my husband was born at Riverview in 1941 and I recall it still being Riverview when it closed. Are the two hospitals one and the same?
I agree that the Rice St. ALDI can be especially "ghetto". There are good deals to be had, but for most people, I don't think it would do for 100% of your shopping. When we were going fairly regularly, I'd go to ALDI probably once a month and load up on all the bargain stuff, but we still have had to shop a "regular" store too.
Oh, and the suburbia stores are lightyears away from the way the Rice St. store feels....at least the one I went to in Savage. Completely different feeling.
Oh, and yes you do have to have your own bags, or pay like a nickel to use theirs.
because it sounds "gangsta"... and deep down, everyone loves thinking they're a gangsta, sometimes.....
sometimes I even prefer to go as far as dropping the "t" and saying "WOO WOO!!!!", while either simultaneously flashing a gang sign that only looked cool in my head.... or....throwing my hands in the air and waving them around like I just dont care.....
back from a wild and crazy night in NSP - w00t!! Way 2 go J! Thanks for coming to the "dark side" .... :ooh: ...sorry about that strange dude Becksie!! : :lipsealed: he got kicked out soon after you'all left (quite the scene!)
Damn.... there was a weird guy hanging around, bothering you guys?
I knew I should have gone.... I had a feeling that my body-guard tactics that have become so useful at CC gatherings in the past, would have been needed someplace tonight.
Well, he was probably upset over the fact that I quit speaking with him and ignored him after he gave me the old "F U" in response to my declining his invitation to "go back to his place and score". WTF?! Seriously...
I am impressed at your control and the whole way you spoke with him and handled the situation ---it was intense to watch, yet fun to watch eachothers reactions to comments. I just can't believe how long that went on- I could NEVER have done or said the things you said - YOU ROCK! you can come watch my back everytime girl!
hey OT, maybe their birthing wing or section of the house/hospital was called that. City Directories and files just have no record of "riverview' until 1949. That is interesting on his certificate. Crazy too - This hospital was even known as St. Paul German Hospital in the early 1900s while it was West Side.
Doing various computer cleaning while watching a vampire movie... Realizing that me2 is at the Timberwolves game in her winning seats for finding my mock hunt...

we always get a kick out watching the man with the dark green suit -front row- with the newspaper --he is at every game and he sits on the floor and slams his newspaper on the floor. Always more entertaining than the game.
half time was cool- about a hundred 4 to 14 girls dance lines - colorful
Walking to get a beer and here "me2!"
turn around to a Cooler member waving! HA!

Thank you for your consideration,
OT
Is it true that Paul Bunyon made all the lakes of Minnesota from having a temper tantrum and stomping around all over the place?
West Side General came first. Built in 1887.
By 1949 the Hospital went by both names
-than by the following year it was just Riverview.
This one was located at 225-235 Prescott in St Paul
I think there might be one or two carts like that in the basement of my mom's house...
