Shaggy 2 Dope

If it rains, just make sure everyone has some cheap ass ponchos from Target or something. I've thought things were gonna suck ass from rain and cold weather before, but with a 98 cent poncho, and some Malibu, things turn out pretty jiggy.

I had some people from my group drop out and then a couple more sign up. Right now I think it will be four of us. I haven't decided what to bring yet, though it needs to be something that can withstand the trip.

Good Evening!

I'm making a chicken cashew pasta salad and will probably make a crock pot of chicken wild rice soup.

The intellicast forecast for Saturday is high in the upper 40's and partly cloudy after rain on Friday. We have a tarp over the wood pile so we should have plenty of dry stuff to burn to keep us warm.

I figure we'll either do hotdogs or hamburgers on the grill for us.

And this from explore Minnesota's fall color report for Moose Lake State Park - about 5 miles north of us: MOOSE LAKE STATE PARK-Moose Lake
Approximately 75 percent of the trees and shrubs have now changed color.
The ash and willows are shades of bright yellow, and the birch trees are
nearing their peak golden color. Over one-half of the maples are
displaying brilliant reds, yellows and orange. Oaks are just beginning to
show a tinge of color. The big bluestem prairie grasses along Interstate
35 between Willow River and Moose Lake are very beautiful shades of rust
and gold. The goldenrod is in full bloom. Early morning and late evening
strolls along Echo Lake offer gorgeous fall color reflections, with fog
and mist adding to the beautiful views. Peak fall color is expected the
end of this week and into the second week of October.

And if it does rain or get too chilly, we do have a house there with heat, running water and indoor plumbing.

Bring lawn chairs. We don't have enough!

Anyone wanting to stay somewhere overnight and not camp, there is always the floor in the house, the AmericInn in Moose Lake and there's the Sturgeon Lake motel. (I don't know much about it except that it's on the west side of the freeway at County Rd. 46.)

Hey-I forgot to add that I saw the Mystery Machine a couple days ago...driving the back ally of a mall at Larpenteur Ave & Rice St. - obviously they were out trying to solve a mystery :)

I saw it a month or so ago and posted about it here. At least now I know I wasn't crazy when I saw it. It seems to get around.

Does anyone here understand much about how the polls and calendar of WebX work?

AW? What games are you gonna bring? Looks like we may need them all and a deck of cards.

I will BYOS (steak for 1)
a bottle or 2 of the finest St Croix Valley wine ;)
a bag or 2 of m&m's
thinking about a cheesy hashbrown hotdish -not with real hash sorry ;)

not here, aw. you may want to ask in the member folder central folder.

Mmmmmmm, cheesy hashbrowns.

I'll probably bring a selection of games that can be played outdoors by a fire (whatever those may be) as well as a few others in case weather forces us indoors. I don't quite picture the evening being about playing board games though.

I made a post in the questions and suggestions thread. I'm wondering if I had my own member folder, would I just create my own "Polls" folder and then put my polls in there and they would be like "my" polls? I'm also trying to figure out if I can have a general calendar for the whole member folder once they get it running.

I'm job hunting again and one of the things I'm pondering is turning my singles club into a professional venture. I'm thinking if I do, perhaps I'd want to move it to WebX where we could have multiple discussion threads instead of just the one Yahoo allows. But we also use the calendar and the polls quite a bit and I wouldn't want to lose that.

I'm also pondering the fact that Bob e might still have a copy of WebX. If I did turn this into a professional venture, perhaps we'd just get pay for our own site and use Bob's program. We could pay to keep it running and he could have his northern cybersite again. I'm not sure yet how serious I am about all this, but I sure would like to make a living doing something I like and that I'm good at instead of putzing around as an adminstrative assistant.

I know that running Web-X can cost some $$$$. The more page views and all that, the more they want for their license on a yearly basis.

If the weather is decent, we won't need games...we'll be by the fire!

Thu, 10/03/2002 - 6:15 PM Permalink

Oh, you have to license it? I thought Bob just bought it outright.

Thu, 10/03/2002 - 6:17 PM Permalink

Flashlights might be a good idea too. We have a couple of rechargable ones - but they only last a little while before needing a recharge.

Thu, 10/03/2002 - 6:17 PM Permalink
Terry

There's a license - and then if you put it on a server - you need to pay yearly server costs.

i've got a maglite and a complete set of replacement batteries.

aw, if you're interested in setting up something cheaply, and are willing to experiment a good deal email me and i'll point you in a direction that could well do what you're looking for, literally for the cost of the hardware and your time setting it up.

Thu, 10/03/2002 - 6:21 PM Permalink

Hmmm, maybe it would be better to just strike a deal with Lance then.

I guess my ideal would be something that can do most everything a Yahoo Group can do including register users and limit access, have discussion boards (ideally multiple ones), a calendar, polls, possibly a membership list, and a chatroom would be nice. Now let me think if I have your email here somewhere.

And just an FYI - there has been auroral activity around most of the week - and some minor storming going on currently. All we need is clear skies and a bit of luck and perhaps Saturday there will be a nice light show.

Of course this is all on the assumption I can drum up business. Right now there is a group out there called Adventure Seekers. They do pretty much the same thing my singles club does except for that they tend to have a an event almost every night whereas we have just 3-4 a week. But they charge $500 a year to be a member and that doesn't even include the cost of the events themselves! That's just to be a member and then you have to pay your own way to the events. And I heard they have maybe 1000 members. That's half a million dollars a year to do basically the same thing I do for free. If I was bringing in that much money I'd have an event most every night also (and mine would probably be more interesting). So I'm trying to figure out if I charge maybe $12/month, $30/3 months, or $100/year could I get 1000 or so members? My free club has never even hit 80 members, but I also have no budget for advertising. Even if I had to pay $25,000/year to run the website, and spent $2,000 a month on events, I'd still have a decent personal income. So anyone have any insights?

Nope, not my mystery machine.

With all this talk of the trip up north there, I wish I could make it. Work has been crazy though. A few weeks ago I had an employee come in to turn in his key and quit right then and there, no two week notice or anything. I finally got someone in today who is training to replace him. Then the fun thing is we get a letter from the Mall saying we have to move our store this Sunday. Of course we get this letter last Friday, giving us basically a week to prepare for this. That doesn't get into the fact that the space they want us to move into is nowhere near being ready. It's a 4,000 sq ft space, but they want to put a wall or something to make two stores, one of which would be 1,500 sq ft. The wall isn't up in this store yet, and they have to deal with the fact that the space has one back room with a bathroom and a fusebox.... which store gets that, and what does the other store get? We're having a big sale this weekend, and it looks like we're going to be moving either Monday/Tuesday or Tuesday/Wednesday. And who knows when we'll open back up. We'd like to open up the day after we're done moving, but I don't know it's feasible. So I'm going to be busy this week selling lots of stuff, continuing to train in my new employee, and figure out what's up with this moving thing.

Roast a marshmallow for me.
