Hey CM, does the registration give any other info on what the own a piece of the palace sweepstakes is? I'm assuming it's different from the button registration....
Yeah, it gives details but not sure if it's that different from the actual carnival sweepstakes. Trip to Jamaica, $1k to Gander Mtn, Jewelry valued at 18k and Cub Foods gift cards.
Cool, now I can watch them build it, even if I'm at work :)
BTW I noticed some trucks down by Phalen tonight, a small group was with me, we were Ice Bowling on the pond connected to Phalen (the one with the fishing dock on it). Could have been some people setting up to start harvesting ice blocks... guess they'll have to shoo the ice fishers away.
okay I was tinkering around with some of my vast video software knowledge and applied it to the ice palace webcam. Hope this isn't some copyright infringement, if it is I'll take the video file down, but I was testing to see how it'd look (not too amazing, they haven't put blocks up yet).
it's a 3 meg download and is a time lapse of the ice palace site from this afternoon.
I'd be happy to make a smaller version of the ice palace construction phase if anyone would like it, or if it's okay with the person that made the webcam available...?
3 minute download? depends on your computer. Up here at the lake we have a 18 minute download :( ..hoping it will be worth the download if it is what I think it is... Is it one of those things that make frames go fast like one of those books you draw a picture on each frame and flip it ---ah a flip book?
I was hoping to see one of those of the ice palace and get it on tape. I expect to see one on the news at the end of the carnival.
They did that with the Cathedral when they were finished with the dome.
Opps.... sorry Me2.. if I do a full one, I'll make sure to compress it down for a faster download. I hope you're not too disappointed in it, it's really not too amazing yet, was just a test honestly. But it is what you're thinking, like a flip book, a bunch of frames running by real quick
Is that capturing the image every 15 seconds? Nice.
I've been printing a page every so often to try and get the same effect. Obviously you just saved me tons of time and paper. Thanks I did it with the Lawson web cam construction when that building went up. Keep up with it. I could get the end product transferred to DVD or CD-R as I'm sure you could as well. That would be pretty cool. Thanks for taking the time.
Actually it's capturing a still every 30 seconds, but I could cut it down to once a minute and not lose much.
That settles it then, I'll start capturing when they start putting the ice blocks in. I heard that starts Friday the 2nd, unless someone knows differently?
I'm thinking cutting the night shots out would help speed it along, as I doubt they'll work on it after dark anyways. Once I get the completed construction in, I'll see about getting it transfered to some sort of CD/DVD format. Video CD would probably be about the best you can do anyways, considering the resolution is only 320x240. Past that, assuming the final product is worth it, I'll get a copy to anyone who wants one (no promises yet, wait until they've finished it and I have it together), just supply me with a CD-R.
b. a program to rename the captured image files (so you can assemble them into video) unless you like renaming hundreds of filenames to make this work? I like Lupas Rename myself
c. a program to make the video from all the image files (assuming you renamed all the images to something like icepalace000001.jpg through icepalace000999.jpg). The program to use here is called Rad Video tools. They're big in the gaming industry, but all the same, it can take a bunch of still frames and make a video out of them.
past that, if you want to edit the video, add a soundtrack or something? you'll need to find a video editor that you like.
So if anyone else wants to try doing it themselves, you now should have the tools to do it. Just better have a good net connection that doesn't drop out on you (or you'll lose vast chunks of the construction)
Thanks big time KC0! I'll give it a try. All I need to do then is keep a window open during the day to take care of the capturing? Cooler. I think if we keep getting these nice warm days, they might be working into the night to assemble the 27k blocks in time for the carnival. If I screw anything up, I'll give you all the CD-R's ya need for requests.
Thanks for the link Ian. According to that info... The warmest it's been during the hunt was 48 on 1/30/89 The coldest it's been during the hunt was -25 on both 1/31/94 & 2/1/96 The warmest average hunt was in 1954 (30.1) The coldest hunt was in 1982 (-2.9)
I know my ass is still thawing out from those 94 & 96 hunts. Thanks again to that guy who gave me a carpet sample to put down the back of my pants to cut the windchill in 94. You da best.
he won't be around for much of the hunt-he (I think won) a trip to somewhere very very warm and it is during the hunt! :(
You know what? It is really hard to imagine a hunt with out some of you people- Like CD! and previously RUSHHArley was gone-but he will be back this year.
KIDS and Ares will be hunting in 'couples style' -
Yes, my fiancee and I broke up. A few of you know though that I have been seeing someone new. I've been very happy with her and I like how things are going. I am hoping that she can make it for the pre-dig gig.
Thanks. I've told her about you guys, so she knows that the hunt is a big thing. Ares and Treasure Chest have met her and really like her. She also has a 3 year old son, so a lil digger to get into the hunt. Although I don't know how much she'll be into the hunt since she lives in Annandale. I'm very happy though and think she's wonderful. :)
Day 3 of the ice palace webcam video project, and I have assembled a full day (from noon yesterday to noon today). Rest assured, the download is only 1 mb, but the video quality is a bit lower. And you'll need windows media player to view it. The other file has gone bye bye too, savin webspace.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!
Merry Christmas!

OK, the Vikings officially suck.
Looks like the troubles with getting ice for the ice palace are almost over.

Go Phalen!
Thanks for putting a link thread for the Ice Palace construction Ian.

Cool. Maybe I'll swing by on my way home tonight and check it out.
we should have our pre-dig PRE gig at Phalen- bonfire, watch them cut the ice blocks- that ice-bowling sounds COOL!
too funny- I was watching the webcam and there were these people hanging out- well, along comes a bus...then the people and the bus were gone....
what entertainment ;p
Lots of equipment at Phalen tonight, but nobody was stirring. Or cutting, for that matter.

I love those fastframes!
I NOW have 3 minutes left in the download hehehe
Very very cooler KC0!
I love it.

Way, way cooler KC0GRN! Thanks for sharing!!

Oh and if anyone's interested, it's actually a very simple setup to do yourself, you need 3 freeware programs to do it.
a. a webcam capture program called FlashIT (to save the images, you can set the interval timing)
http://www.flashfxp.com/freeware.php?Program=FlashIT
b. a program to rename the captured image files (so you can assemble them into video) unless you like renaming hundreds of filenames to make this work? I like Lupas Rename myself
http://www.azheavymetal.com/~lupasrename/news.php

ohh cool, I didn't notice the webcam is from twincities.com, I suppose as long as I don't sell video from it, I'm good :)
I just saw this link in an e-mail and thought I would share it.

We can change that! By the time we are done with her she will be as addicted as anyone else! :)

Comments?
That will be so cool to watch once they start actually building it.
Only complaint I have is the quality could be a bit better, but you need to do what you need to do.
I can't get it to play for some reason :(
