1998 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Hunt for the Pioneer Press medallion!

The Pioneer Press medallion has been found. Details are at our Winter Carnival page.

The hunt's over, but the discussion rages on ...

Catch 22

It says "Instead you should look near a place--Where three pyramids rise over the snow" I take this to mean the roofs over the bathrooms and that near a place would mean that you should be near the bathrooms. Please expain what you think.

Catch 22

No it's not me, but it is the only guy I saw that had a funny hat. It was around 7:30.

In #4 of course lg. object smokestack & dome BUT FIRST!!! so what I did was block out the cathederal with the smokestack and in keeping it that way walked in the park with pyramids in view. Just a hunch but think of the last clue when it was at Como last...

I like your thinking catch 22- the rest of the clues are obvious from that point as well

"near" is a relative term. does the pyramid clue merely point to somewhere in cp?

Sorry if sent anyone to como

Hey, does anyone have any more ideas about clue #5? If Annapolis the "line of double division" from clue #7, would they be referring to it as the "city streets" in clue #5 too? What other city streets are they talking about? And is the place to play just the playground near the bathrooms at Cherokee?

Catch 22

There is winona, wyoming and sidney (not sydney as in australia though) that all run into the park. And the dough clue could point to Baker St.

I think in clue 8 they mean the medallion is near a spot where it looks like the bathroom roofs rise over the snow (not be near the pyramids).. but I think I'm giving away my favored digging spot too much! And I also think the large object in clue 4 is the dome itself. It's not two domes, it's one... A (as in one) large object in view.. then they make us figure out what that object is - a dome. I'm not telling WHICH dome I think it is..

Wyoming is a state, but I get it with Winona and Sydney. Hmmm

Hey catch 22!

High ground refers to the High Bridge.

SueBee yes about 30 feet

WHY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Catch 22

Last night the guy with the jester hat was standing on the north side of the bathrooms. He was saying that looking north the large tree divides in two and the NSP tower is in one crook and the dome is in the other crook of the tree. I'm not sure if this could be double division but it could be.

Mon, 02/02/1998 - 10:02 AM Permalink
SueBee

jrnj, what do you mean, 30 feet? I'm a bit confused..

Mon, 02/02/1998 - 10:03 AM Permalink

The dough definitely refers to Baker St.

Catch, I bet that's a bit too deep. I truly believe double division is just Annapolis being the line between St. paul and WSP and Ramsey and Dakota counties. That's all.

Mon, 02/02/1998 - 10:05 AM Permalink
Catch 22

I know wyoming is a state (was born in Sundance) but there is also a Wyoming, MN.

Mon, 02/02/1998 - 10:05 AM Permalink
Catch 22

It is deep and I agree with annapolis being the division, but at this point who knows what to think.

Mon, 02/02/1998 - 10:06 AM Permalink
SueBee

Catch, oops, I didn't know there was a Wyoming, MN. Hope I didn't insult your intelligence. I didn't mean to. :-)

No doubt we're all trying to read all kinds of crazy things into the clues at this point. It's either going to be a fluke that someone comes across the exact spot or it'll go until the last clue when they all but mark the spot with an X!

Mon, 02/02/1998 - 10:08 AM Permalink
Catch 22

By no means! I didn't know there was a Wyoming, MN either, someone brought it in a post a long ways back.

could fore mean the front of CP?? the northeast part of the park has not ben dug up much. Is there a jogging path around CP??

SueBee You asked if the playground was close to the bathrooms, yes about 30 ft.

Mon, 02/02/1998 - 10:11 AM Permalink
Catch 22

Could "kids like to zoom" mean the slide on the playset?

Mon, 02/02/1998 - 10:13 AM Permalink
SueBee

jrnj, oh, thanks for the clarification. I just wondered if the place to play reference might have any more meaning than just that playground. Probably not.

I think the kids go zoom is the sledding hill that goes down toward the ball diamonds at Annapolis. Earlier in the clue it references Rosebud, which is the name of the sled in Citizen Kane. I think they go hand in hand. In the past, most clues only give away one thing. People are trying to cram two and three different messages into each clue. It doesn't usually work that way.

agree with suebee

Catch 22

Oh well, just another thought!

The "kids like to zoom" being a slide is a theory that's been batted around. I think the slide at Cherokee has all but been dug off its bolts. The slide is well in view though. The only trouble I have with the sledding theory is the hill that I saw kids using on Saturday is on the other side of a grove of trees from the bathroom pyramids. However, I was over by the hill during the day and by the bathrooms at night. Does anyone know what the view of the sledding area is from different sightlines below the bathrooms? I couldn't tell in the dark.

#8 Could be on or along side of snowpacked sidewalk(first 2 lines)

Greg:

Spent all day around the bathrooms yesterday afternoon. There doesn't seem to be anywhere that you can really view the sledding area from below the bathrooms. I think this is still ANYone's game until they narrow down the spot - the fun has only begun!!!

Did someone say that the Double division refers to Annapolis?? How so?

Does anybody out there know anything about the OTHER end of CP.

We have been looking by the sledding hill, bathroom, division, smoke strack , baker street for 5 days how about other parts of the park??

I keep reading into these clues every year - thinking just maybe whoever rights them will come up with something extremely ingenious to figuring them out ,but it never happens that way . its always one clue represents one object.one year I will rent a airport runway snow melting machine and melt the entire park

Mon, 02/02/1998 - 10:29 AM Permalink

Yes, there are places where the bathroom pyramids, the NSP smoke stack, and either the Cathedral or Capitol domes can be seen from the top of the sledding hill. The ground is solid ice about 2" thick - not exactly easy digging. Wish I was out there right now!

Gotta go. Good luck hunting. Somebody should check out the OTHER end of CP.

THE LARGE OBJECT IN VIEW COULD BE LANDMARK-- THE BREWERY!!! BUT WHAT THE SMOKESTACK AND YOU'LL BE BACK COULD THIS MEAN THAT WHEN YOU SEE THE PYRAMIDS ABOVE THE SNOW THE SMOKESTACK IS TO YOUR BACK???? JUST A THOUGHT !!!

That's interesting ... I was convinced that it was on the other end of the Park. The Baker Street and the split in the streets ... 2 streets with two way traffic carving out the park ...
