I really hate the fact that guessing the park isn't enough to win. You also have to excavate the whole place or be lucky enough to start in the right area. Oh well, at least I get to be in a movie.

I said I DON'T know exactly where, but pretty close. Its on the western half of Valley Rec Center, probably away from the playground, but also probably not too far from the entrance.

AW...the clues do seem to fit with Valley...BUT....I am not sold on the idea that they would put the medallion in an area that is used for a playground during school recess....too dangerous for the students.

AW, HOLD UP! Ok, Valley is that one on University and Jackson right? wheres the playground? me n Shaggy drove past there last night and didnt see any rec center

First off, there's the east west thing. The clue says East AND West. If you look at the addresses in St. Paul, and find where the east addresses divide from the west addresses, that line goes right through Valley, thus it is both east and west.

Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:15 PM Permalink
mncheetah

Me and scoob drove by there too.

Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:15 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Yes, its on Jackson and University. I think its just called a rec center because they have softball fields there.

This is just a bit of info- Franklin steele could be a man of steel, but without mettle

Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:18 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Secondly, there are the tables. Away from the playground side, down a slope, there are some round tables. Not only are the tables circular, but the seats around them are too, and the tables are arranged in a circle. Certainly that's some circular thinking. And what's more, if you believe the following clue that implies the treasure, which makes you smile, is on the west side by the playground, then the treasure would indeed be out of view from those tables because they are downhill from there.

Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:19 PM Permalink
michelle's destiny

I went to Valley today and there are NO round tables, Allison.

Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:20 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

I was wondering about Franklin Steel. Either way I think Franklin is the name they are going for in today's clue. The school there is Franklin Magnet school. Magnets are made of steel, but Franklin isn't. But Benjamin Franklin certainly was a man of mettle.

Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:20 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Yes there are Michelle, I saw them. You have to go way over to the far side to see them as they're down the hill and thus out of view. There are also some picnic tables higher up that are easier to see, but that's not what I'm referring to.

Holy Cow, I just stepped out to get my mail and saw a pile of people at Marydale, even someone with a camera

AW- so youre basing Valley on the East West clue and making the others fit? Just curious

Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:22 PM Permalink
InspectorDigs

AW...have you been to Valley when the school children are out to recess??...are they right in the immediate area????....I don't think he would put it in an area with school kids around???

Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:22 PM Permalink
Medallion-less

Allison- On your magnet theory....I disagree - magnets are made of Alnico, which is a metallic alloy of aluminum, nickel, iron and cobalt.

Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:26 PM Permalink
Allison Wonderland

Then you have the fact that Valley is not a park, which fits with the idea that they didn't mention park. Its small and obscure and unfamiliar to most people which would help make the hunt harder in theory, just as they claimed. And its never been used before.

Then you have other more iffy clues:

  • gold- The gold statues from the Capitol can be seen
  • bank- You can see the First National Bank sign
  • test- There is a school there and its on University
  • duel- there is plenty of fencing around
  • depression- Valley

The only thing that doesn't fit isn't even a clue. Its just that it seems like a bizarre place to put it considering that kids use it for recess.

    magbru

Allison, was at valley today, and everything that you mentioned here is true. I thought the same thing with the tables being out of view. I also noticed that there is a church with two steeples on it looking between the capitol and the 1st bank sign, and if June is weddings, that's where it'd be held. It does look good for all clues, however The kids I could see them looking around, but what about parking and traffic?? You can't turn left out of the lot, only right and the hill is already full to due to Regions people parking there.

    Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:27 PM Permalink
    InspectorDigs

magbru....I agree....that location would be a nightmare for traffic...I have always believed it has to be in an accessible location for many many vehicles.

    Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:29 PM Permalink
    Allison Wonderland

The east-west thing is where I started. I think the tables fit too perfectly though to dismiss as "making the clues fit".

I thought some magnets were made of steel. I don't think they're all made of the same thing. What really matters though is what the clue writer thinks they are made of.

And no, I've not been ther during recess, but some other people were out there yesterday during the day and said no one bothered them about being out there. My guess though is that it would have to be hidden away from where the kids play, otherwise the kids might find it by accident.

    michelle's destiny

Well, I was at Valley today and did some poking around. I was there around 1:45pm. Anyway, I saw one man there with a brownish coat..was that you, magbru? You were by the picnic tables?

Anyway, if you do NOT turn right into the Valley parking lot, you can go straight and take the next right onto Mount Airy Street and go straight. One of the apt complexes, you can go right into a parking lot and park and look down. That's where I saw the only park benches. They were square..not round. There is a street, I think it's L'Orient that runs parrallel to the park.

Actually, its only buses that are forbidden from turning left. But is the clue writer really concerned about our convenience? Maybe he didn't count on someone figuring it out and telling everyone instead of keeping it to themselves. Obviously their goal is simply to make it last as long as possible. Bad parking would actually help that goal. And its not like Conway or Newell had great parking.

    Thu, 01/25/2001 - 2:33 PM Permalink
    michelle's destiny

Why do people think it's at Newell?

    Allison Wonderland

There are square picnic tables there, but there are also round ones, but the round ones are harder to see. They're even in the Treasure Hunter's Guide if you want to look them up.

The cluewriter isn't concerned about our convenience but I have to believe he is thinking about the logistics of the location. As in traffic for non-medallion hunters.

Allison, I am going to nap and do some other things...call me if you want to go out tonight. Again, I would like to meet around 6pm. If not then, I think...either I will go with Jack or we can go tomorrow night with you. But tell me more about knowing exactly where it is..

All I can say is I didn't hide it. (Really!) This is just where all the clues seem to fit, and the degree to which the PP takes context into consideration is an unknown variable. If you don't believe, you can keep thinking where else it moight be. I'm just saying all the clues fit here, and in my opinion they fit pretty well. In the meantime, I have an errand to run. Will be back in a little while.
