2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

LL - I've been trying to come up with something clever for your t-shirt, but the creative juices are on a hiatus right now.

There's more on 2556, LLady.

Why not glue pink painted ping-pong balls on it to match the polka dots?

I expect them to be really creative, How, I dont' know, but I don't think they will hide it under a picnic table or something lame like that, With no snow we can pretty much go to any park and wander aimlessly and look for something that looks out of the ordinary.

Gonna be in a navel orange...

Ya, furshure, LLady... I had to cheat and get my JOE!!!

I was trying to come up with a funny definition for "cooler head" and put it on the shirt like you would see in the dictionary.

Wed, 01/09/2002 - 5:42 PM Permalink
Rushmore

LL - maybe you can come up with a clever anagram for pink polka dot(s)

do you think they would ever put it up in a tree? possilbly in bushes?

Wed, 01/09/2002 - 5:42 PM Permalink
Rushmore

Tree, I think would be too risky - someone may fall and get hurt - bushes - a possibility, but how many are barren now and how many are still full with plumage?

Otay...

"coo-lur hed; (n) One that prevails. You dig?"

There's your def. Not only true and bonafide, but historically accurate! :D

It will be on the ground. It will not be off the ground. It will not be on the top o'the building by the Conway library; it will not be up in a tree.

JOE!!!

Cooler head - a person that can wear a pink polka dot outfit in public and not feel out of the ordinary. For, all cooler heads will prevail - in the end.

good one green! I think I may just use that!

no tree makes some sense, but maybe not in the braches, could be lower, more blended in. they could camoflauge well it in a bush too, even if it is bare.

You know you are a cooler head if...

1. You stand outside the Pioneer Press building at 11:30 P.M waiting for the next day's clue.

2. YOur favorite past time is digging through snow at 1:30 A.M. in sub zero temeratures.

3. You noodle the first clue enough to give you the park, the thing it is in and the exact location.

I could go on and on but it would be better if you guys did. A group conglomoration...

You know, I used to pride myself on the fact that there wasn't a single message on the old board(s) I hadn't read. This will no longer be the case--I am starting so far behind.

So, tim, can you you give me a brief synopsis of the plot so far?....

Wed, 01/09/2002 - 5:52 PM Permalink

A lot of nothing.

No one knows what to expect with the lack of snow, everyone looks forward to the 19th(pre dig gig) at mc governs. We thought of becoming stalkers, but didnt want to cheat. Lots of arguments over spotters.

10-4, Tim-- Hey everybody, they are holding Klondike Kate auditions, which is, as we all know, to the Winter Carnival as the first Robin is to spring. To paraphrase, it doesn't start until the fat lady sings!

I think they do have spotters, I've seen people just standing around watching also

LLady... Look at the top o'this page? See the banner? The guy to the left that's yappin' is "Cooler Head Luke," a take-off on "Cool Hand Luke"... Dontcha know.

And this thread is just one of the "coolers" here in the PP Water Cooler...

So... We started calling ourselves "Cooler Heads," and that eventually evolved into The Cooler Crew that meets in real time to just hang out - like at The Pre-Dig Gig, The Re-Hash Bash, hunting together, and sometimes even playing cards and doing cookouts in the summer.

Well... The very first logo'd wear that came out after the '98 Chair-O-Key Hunt had the above banner on it, on the back, with our Web site address: www.coolercrew.com

And the frond said, "Cooler Heads Will Prevail," meaning one o'these effin' days ONE o'us WILL find it!!! :D

And what's so neat about that first ever t-shirt... Sumbuddy got all xcited and giggly and when the shirts were finally back from the screen printer, it was discovered it had been completely forgotten to put "PioneerPlanet" or "Pioneer Press" or anything like that on there! I bet those puppies are gonna be worth something someday.

If you want to see what they look like, I think there's pics o'them on the Web site.

(end o'history lesson for the day)

Marley King asked if I was going to have another Mock Hunt after the medallion hunt. I don't see why not so I'd say plan on it.

Someone else asked when was a good time (i.e. which clue) is a good time to plan on going out hunting. The answer to that varies. In Conway in 99, people were still largely wandering around aimlessly on the 7th clue (I went out to Conway that day and the snow was pretty much virgin snow). But then the following year, at Newell, it had already been found by the 7th clue. It all depends on the clues and what sort of inspiration you have. There's a good chance you'll *want* to dig by the 4th or 5th clue, but conventional wisdom says to save your energy for later in the hunt. It seems to me Clue 7, which comes out Friday night, is usually when people really start to go out hunting. Now whether that's because of how the clues are structured or if its merely because its the weekend and that's when people are available to hunt, you can judge for yourself, but if you needed an estimate, that's what I would say.

Finally, it seems in addition to fans I also have some enemies now. I have to admit to being surprised at seeing such hostility over having ventured wrong guesses. I suppose they must have listened to me and wasted time and effort in the wrong park. If so, I'm sorry about that. But then again, I was just presenting what I saw and believed and was out there myself. Whether anyone believes my opinion or not is purely up to them.

I will admit I was wrong last year, even when I was sure I was right. I would have almost bet the $10,000 that it wasn't in Como, because I knew it wasn't in Como. So that shows what I know. But therein lies the lesson learned. You can't really know anything with these clues, it's just a matter of one's best guess. Even if the clues make perfect sense for somewhere, that doesn't mean the Medallion is there, because the clues never make perfect sense. Indeed, the clue that tells you what the treasure is hidden in really serves little other purpose than to throw you off by making you believe it relates to the hiding place. So this year my goal is to try and not jump to any certain conclusions, but instead consider all the possibilities. Just because something doesn't fit one of the clues, doesn't mean it's not the right place ("man of mettle", "ace", "round and white and stretched quite tight"). So I'm going to try and get out of that mindset that the best answer must be the right answer because after having read the clues and their explanations the last few years, that's clearly not true.

As for people who want to make childish attacks against me, this will be my only reply to you. I'm not going to bog down the message board with personal wars that no one else is interested in reading. If you're going to insist on trying to start something, know that you will be ignored. And if you continue to clutter the message board with personal attacks that only distract from the subject people are here for, you'll likely gain no sympathy from anyone else and you'll be the one no one listens to.

No, Tim, I wasn't talking about you. With you, I at least assume you're joking around. Some others, this year and last, have been overtly hostile. But I don't come here to engage in pointless bickering. I come here to discuss the hunt. I'll admit I made some mistakes last year, and as far as I'm concerned, that should be the end of it. There's a new hunt about to begin so no point in worrying about what happened in the past.

Well I am glad that you caught on that I was simply joking around, I also understand that to some it gets old quick. Especially if you have to deal with a bunch of jerks seriously heckling you. In being at the correct park last year, I had theories on several more. No one is a perfect noodler, and this is good, otherwise we'd all be screwed!
