2002 Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

Yes, the medallion has been found, but there's still lots to talk about. Feel the need for more than virtual discussion? Then join the Re-Hash Bash, Sunday, Jan. 27, at noon at Merriam Park in St. Paul.

Oh! I can eat my weight in pickled herring in cream sauce!

And lox, and caviar, and the hard, smoked salmon/fish (not like lox).

Does that earn me points?

What the heck is pickeld herring?

The fish that comes in a jar? You can get it in wine or cream sauce. Ittiz a big item at Christmas/New Years.

Basically, ittiz raw herring. It's not been cooked, but pickled. Quite good!

Yeesh, fish, or any seafood, just, gags me, eesh, ick, blah!

My brother-in-law pickles northern. It's very good and the pickling process disintegrates any missed bones.

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 6:54 PM Permalink
green

Huh. I didn't know that. That the pickling disintegrates the bones. That's interesting.

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 7:10 PM Permalink
Terry

It's the reason he first started pickling them. As you know, there are lots and lots of bones in Northerns, and though he's excellent with a fillet knife, he likes that the bones disappear if you happen to miss any during the filleting process.

Those in this house that eat herring say the northern is better.

Wow. I'd love to try it... :D

Looks like some snow is forecast for tonight, tomorrow, Sunday and more chances of snow next week. I was actually kinda looking forward to hunting in the mud, dirt, leaves, junk.

hunting in the mud? are you serious? the whole purpose is to find it in the snow! ya dig??

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 7:32 PM Permalink
Terry

Hehehehehehehe!!!

I was being sarcastic I guess. I do remember hunts during January thaws and the ground would get all mooshy muddy. No fun!

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 7:34 PM Permalink
Med2k

I hope the ground hasnt thawed too much this past week, the snow won't mean all that much if it doesnt stay

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 7:36 PM Permalink
Terry

When folks start walking on that thawing grass/dirt...it turns into mud really fast. Slippery as any ice and falling into mud is well...goopy gooey yuk!

I do have some predictions.

The medallion won't be placed anywhere near a larger body of water this year. With the thinner ice, the PP folks and the Carnival folks would not want to have the damper of someone falling through thin ice during the hunt. In my mind, that eliminates Marydale, Phalen, Como for sure.

The year it was at Hidden Falls, the river was open and that didn't seem to be an issue. It's the thin ice spots that will/should be eliminated.

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 7:40 PM Permalink
Terry

I figure that leaves plenty of large, small, in-between parks without the water issue to noodle over.

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 7:41 PM Permalink
Med2k

I have a feeling it won't be in a big park this year, thats what everyone is saying because of the numbers, so many hunters, but the hunt gets bigger every year, they can't just keep going to their big guns. I think it will be in a new park or one it hasnt been at in a while and only once or twice. variety is the key.

I think Colonel Mustard has it in the library.

I've just got this emotional, gut, femaley-type, intuitive, not-based-on-fact, seat-o-my-pants, wild-hair, wishful thinking idea that The Med's gonna be in a nord east, never-been-there-before, rec center.

Pure supposition. Don't beat me up about it.

kids, i was talking yesterday about who was gonna get the 3000th post at lunch time. here we are, 30 or so hours later and almost a thousand more posts. we might actually make 10000 before sunday morning.

i'm only half a scandahoovian. the half that prefers italian to lutefisk (doesn't everyone?)

Welcome bock, Ares.

d/c, hayden heights, hazel? any one in particular, srta. verde? or just one of 'em.

rec centers are good possibilities this year, they can narrow it down to a rec center with the fisrt group of clues, then give some ambiguous clues that could relate to many of the same rec centers and narrow it down with the last few clues. I have a feeling we will get to double digits in clues this year, pp needs to make that money

thanks green. evenin' to you too.

I scouted out Phalen yesterday, since I had not been there before. While out that way, I spied a park that I have a good feeling about, which fits with Green's intuition.

Rushmore

I do prefer the Italian to the lutefisk, that's for darn sure. I think my prediction from this afternoon of 7000+ posts is going to fall by the way side sooner that I was anticipating.

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 7:50 PM Permalink
green

None in particular. That list I posted? That weird list that seemed to be mostly "H's"? (Really weird!) Those are just the most nord eastern rec centers... And they would fit in with those that think there's a possibility The Med's going outta town for a vacation.

Palomino JOE!!!

There are somethings I do not like at all....Liver being the most disgusting. Lutefisk is like lobster compared to that!

I like Italian better though too.

I found an interesting park tucked into a neighborhood a couple years ago. It's north central though...not east. We only have 8 more days to find out if we're looking in the city or in the county.

Yes... One week from tonite, Brown's gonna hafta shove some kind'a tranquilizing stuff down my throat.

And I hate to what I'm gonna be like a week from tomorrow!!!

Well all, I have a test tomorrow at 7:30am, so I should start to study for that so that I can get to bed at a decent hour. Have a good night and I look forward to conversing with you all soon.

Nite, Rush. SCDs. Good luck on the test.

Like I've any control over twitting out? Rite, yeah. Uh-huh.

"I've just got this emotional, gut, femaley-type, intuitive, not-based-on-fact, seat-o-my-pants, wild-hair, wishful thinking idea..."

Now that's pretty much the definition of a Pisces. So in other words Green, if you have trouble with the whole logic thing, don't stress about it too much. You're just being who you were born to be. :)

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 8:03 PM Permalink

And something more than, "small and round," would be appreciated! LOL!!!

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 8:03 PM Permalink
Terry

Green - You'll see them when they're ready. We're fidgeting with what started out as 8 different designs....now down to two. This year's button will be the one that after all fidgeting around with it, works the best for the size it needs to be. It will be appropriate and cute...probably about 2 inches square.

Terry says she think the medallion won't be near a body of water because of the thin ice.

Well now that gets into a lot of theory about just when the clues are written. If the place has been picked for a while, and the clues have been worked on for some time, they wouldn't likely change it at the last minute because of something like that I wouldn't imagine. I think the only way they would take something like thin ice into consideration is if they do all this only a few weeks ahead of time. It's possible it could be done in that short of a time, but I doubt that it is.

As for having to hide it without snow, it is possible they may rewrite the one clue that talks about what it is hidden in if need be.

"Pow, Alice! To the MOON!" Welcome home, Allison!

I don't xactly stress, Allison, but I do get envious. I'm just in awe of folks that can be so logical... It's like, "Wow! HOW do you DO that???"

terry, are you by any chance some politician's spin doctor? cuz that's usually the type of answer someone's pr manager would give. lol

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 8:07 PM Permalink

Nope. No spin doctor of any kind.

Maybe that comes from working in the human service arena?

Besides - how could "it" be explained when "it" isn't finished to perfection yet? Or even narrowed down to one "it" yet!?!?!?

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 8:09 PM Permalink

TERRY!!!! (said whining and stamping large size 9)

I wanna know what they look like - NOW!!!

I like the square idea. I like how we switch off and all.

Who designed them? You again? Last years were very very nice and well done. Remember when you could hardly turn on a 'putter four years ago? Now you're using design software!!! :D

Ares, if he's not, he should be.

There IS, you know...

Fri, 01/11/2002 - 8:12 PM Permalink
Terry

Green - Now I'm doing tech support and teaching the use of a specialized software package. Go figure.

I did however know how to turn on a putter more like 6 or 7 years ago when the Pioneer Press first had this forum.

There will be snow. A digger(s). A shovel.
