I believe I joked arround after the Como hunt that I was starting an "elitest group of hunters". I never thought that someone would actually do it. My question then is this, will Trent pit the medallionators against the cooler crew (as a storyline)? Has the cooler crew "been targeted"? I am suddenly affraid to go to sleep. They are after us! Ahhhhhhhhhhh

ANSWER: COMO

Clue #1Did you know St. Paul had a LOVERS LANE? now...where was it?

you be the judge of where in Como, Lovers Lane is...
this picture is taken in Como Park
I believe either the walkway in the woods near the Dutch Oven
OR -a walkway to the lake from the trolley station -

that sounds romantic

CLUE #2

The city's workhouse was located in the park
and every year about 30 inmates planted trees
and shrubs, established lawns & flowerbeds.

see? I knew you would get it- and if you didnt then you now know something new about COMO!

Winner is
THOSEMEDALLINGKIDS

with what i think is just a guess!

TWAS THE EVE OF THE HUNT

twas the eve of the hunt, we were ready for the haul, not a digger was sleeping,at least not in st.paul! Their shovels were clutched oh so proudly with care, in hopes that the meddallion soon would be theirs!

the diggers were dressed in their boots with good tread, while visions of dollar signs danced in their heads, with dad in his long johns and me with my scarf, we just started off our long walk through the park.
when out on the playground i heard somthing shatter, i sprang from my car to see what was the matter, away to the swings i flew in a flash, slamming the door, almost breaking the glass!
the slide was all covered with new fallen snow and the monkey bars had icicles that hung really low, when what to my wondering eyes should appear? but the whole cooler crew and some 40 oz beers!

with a leader who knew there wasn't much time, i knew in a flash it must be terry valentine! swifter than cheetas her diggers they came as she whistled and shouted and called them by name.
now jake inge now green brown now meddling kids and marly king! on tim the hunter on ian on eags and leelabell! to the top of the hill to the top of the park! now dig away! dig away! dig away all!like a plow they uncovered every inch of that place, their noses all red and hope in their face. they dug way up high and some down below, but not one could uncover that medallion in the snow!and then in the distance i saw by the water, a man with a paper, it must be a spotter! all smug was his face and his eyes sometimes scattered, he looked like a bum cuz his clothes were all tattered!
the man with the paper was now in his car, all toasty and warm smoking a big cigar, but i heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight happy digging to all and to all a good night!

There's one thing Jake and Green have in common. Wherever I say it is, they'll disagree because they don't want to look like they got their idea from me. So as long as I get the right park, we don't have to worry about the Medallionators. hehe.

tim_the_hunter

The only reason I could give as to why I would ever disagree with Allison is that he is WAY too smart for the Pioneer Press. His reasonings are always above the head of the clue writer.

Oh, and there is the thought that Allison actually IS the clue writer and he just "dumbs down" the real clues so that more people have the chance to participate.

I think I would be nervous of Indian spirits lurking in my car -watching me 'neck'

Ghosts don't stick around that long. The oldest known ones are some Roman ones around 2,000 years. Aren't the Mounds older than that?

As for Me2's trivia, the last thing I want to hear about is more clues referring to things that only used to be in Como Park, but aren't anymore. :-P

Allison wouldn't dumb down enough to hide it at Newell that one year, or put it in the middle of a ball field last year.

Allison Wonderland

I The only reason I could give as to why I would ever disagree with Allison is that he is WAY too smart for the Pioneer Press.

That actually has caused problems in the past where I went with explanations that I thought were really cool, assuming that if they were that clever, they must be correct. Turns out that wasn't true. So last year I went the other way:

Clue 1- In St. Paul

Clue 2- Park with hills

Clue 3- Park with hills and trees

Clue 4- Radio tower in sight

And that basically got me to Merriam. Had I stuck with that strategy on clue 6, and figured that if it sounds like they're talking about a baseball diamond, then it must be a baseball diamond, instead of thinking it had to be something more clever, I might have actually found the thing. So I'm probably going to try and stick with the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) strategy again this year.

Oh, and there is the thought that Allison actually IS the clue writer and he just "dumbs down" the real clues so that more people have the chance to participate.

If I were the clue writer, I might very well do what the PP is possibly already doing. That being have the clues operate on a few different levels, but only bother explaining the most basic level publicly, so the true complexity of the clues doesn't scare people off.

Actually the real problem with both Newell and Merriam wasn't the clues (well maybe it was a bit with Newell), but it had more to do with how the thing was actually hidden. At Merriam, well they might as well have painted a big X on it to mark the spot. At Newell, they put it in a colored cardboard box. The guy who found it even said to the paper that he knew he had it when he saw a splash of color in the snow. And being cardboard, the snow didn't stick to it in the least, so once you got to it, you were bound to find it. As compared to Conway where the thing was probably dug up several times, but being encased in white yarn, no one realized what it was because it looked like just a small clump of snow.

If you want a long hunt, you first have to use the clues to keep people offguard as to which park it's even in. Conway and Cherokee were good examples of that as people really had little to no idea of the park until at least clue 7 or 8. Then you have to keep them guessing about where in the park it is. It's hard to keep that up for more than a clue or two unless it's a really big park. And then in the end, the last defense you have is really just how well it's actually hidden. I think I had mine pretty well hidden at Phalen as well as at Linwood, and that caused the hunt to go to close to the end as a result. If I had to hide it this year, I'd probably do something similar to what I did at Phalen. Maybe put it in a velvet pouch, dip the thing in mud from the area I was going to hide it in, and let it freeze so that it just looks like a rock or something.

With all do respect, that's what I feel with every hunt, including your Phalen one. The bus turn-around area matched the clues way better than the actual area it was in. A couple of ideas really had me convinced that was the place and there was no other. I actually got the 'Big W' feeling on that one. And I haven't had that strong feeling since it was at Langford a number of years ago. So thank you for that feeling anyway. I love it!

I guess we all go through that at one time or another. Just ask anybody who's actually digging hard and true, why they're digging in that particular spot. If they tell you their answer you would more than likely just politely agree and move on. When all along the digger just KNOWS that he's got it down and nobody else has a clue.

I do admire your writing ability AW. It's always impressed me. From your analysis, to your actual clue writing, to your explanations. They're always written in a very concise manner.

For a chick anyway ;-)
