2008 St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion

Clue #1 You've joined the hunt for the regal runt
To prove searching does pay
Don't dig a hole or knock down a pole
And the golf course is out of play

Last year Jake took home the cake
With a clue a bit off level
This year we'll rinse off all our prints
Lest this hunt go to the devil

Clue #2 The point of all this is so that you won't miss
Your big chance to grab all the cash
Now gather your guys and a gal who is wise
You'll have to do something quite rash

Clue #3 We've scanned the county to hide our bounty
And keep you on your toes
It may sound risible, but our puck's invisible
Although it might just stick to your nose.

Clue #4 How fun is the snow how far will we go
You really ought to go see
Get up for the mission and not just the wishin'
Get into the game-it's all free

Clue #5 There once was a clue that drove you-know-who
To threaten a heinous act
We'd use it again but we're afraid of his pen
My friend, that's an unfortunate fact

Clue #6 All ye who look should honor the book
As one who stood for hope
Much was built in the name of the kilt
Look sharp now and never mope

Clue #7 If you should go look high then low
One could see it from a bower
If it's your bent you might seek a tent
To protect in case of shower

Take note of the wood and do what you should
To extract the prize for yourself
Build a bridge to your dreams as high as they seem
Leave nothing behind on the shelf

Clue #8 Look at the buck to acquire good luck
In finding the grail this year
Link a jar,a line, a star lawyer divine
While crying in your beer

He won, then lost and the nation was tossed
Into strife that was far from civil
The point I'm making is yours for the taking
Believe me - not the message board drivel

Clue #9 This name brings tears, elation and cheers
And occasionally even outrages
It sits on walls and rides the halls
And fills a dozen pages

The hills are alive and you'll have arrived
Refrain from the very injurious
Be bold and be brave but your skin you must save
What's off-limits should frankly be obvious

Clue #10 Look for the sight you hope is just right
You're doubtful and you're torn
Make the rounds for what rhymes with grounds
And part of a rose with a horn

Through flames and flow this park where you'll go
Is the site of sacred relics
Stay away from these and the cliffs if you please
Or you'll be in a heckuva fix

Clue #11 Air and river sounds lead all to Mounds
Far from the graves take your entourage
Twixt Burns and Thorn, an icy pathway is born
Across Mounds from a gray house and tan garage

Hell no fury hath as those on the wrong path
Mounds and Warner form a woodsy perimeter
The path not official contains footprints beneficial
Some 300 trudges in - quest for a quitter

This trail you must follow goes down a narrow hollow
Under a fallen tree to an old rusted drum
From here you must search for a hillside path perch
Wherein lies the center of fun

when I was in my DUI school (or DWI for you minnesnowtans) several of our 'lesson plans' were out of the book and that's what the teacher called it. That's why I tie the two together. Maybe it was just her reference, but that is what it was always called.

well some guy on craigslist has a book of maps and clues for $150 bucks - you may want to start there ... :0)

Sorry you are bummed about the hunt Mucky.

I wish I would have had more time to noodle this year - I'm just bummed in general that January is such a busy time for me to free up my nights for thinking.

I don't know if anyone noodled this or not.. but I was poking around on the pioneer press boards and found a good point... so I'll paste it here:

Point douglas forms a point with Clarence at Burns, next to Ogg's Bar. Could be on Star Hill. Or just into the woods from Star Hill. And there is a foot bridge there that crosses Warner/Great River rd.

this was posted by someone named hidiver or something like that.. I just want to make sure he or she gets the credit for that noodle... so I was thinking about star lawyer, and when they mentioned the whole Clerence thing.. I thought of none other than.....

here here. Hopefully next year I'll have a job that actually allows me time off.

I don't think I'll take much of the first week off, but I'd like to have the final few days of the hunt to get out more.

My overwhelming sense from reading the boards and talking to people out at parks is that people haven't enjoyed this year's hunt as much as hunts of the past. A whole weekend of relatively nice weather was wasted, now people are given the park and it's back to being "40below" out, people are getting hurt, slipping, falling... my wife was out there last night & slipped on a patch of ice in the woods with her friend, both were dinged up pretty good... it's really a shame.

I know I've seen and heard a few people who have loved the clues and the hunt this year, but in the past almost everybody who was out looking was having a great time.

Let's just hope it's not a sign of things to come. I know I'm still heading out, braving the elements for my small chance at doing something nobody in my family has been able to do in 50+ years of hunting.

lol I'll tell ya what... I saw some freaky lookin stuff in those woods... I'm not sure I really WANT to know what ppl do down there at night.. roflmao.

Well, I survived finding a condom at Crosby and my wife survived going to Swede Hollow at one in the morning a few nights back, so IM can't be any worse than that... lol

lol Oh I dunno...lots of little places in the woods where you could see people were burnin stuff... and some funky smells too. It's scary as heck in the winter, I can only imagine how scary it is in the summer!

I'm going over after work tonight - I work near Baldwin, WI. If I can make it home to Woodbury, I can damn well make it to Mounds Park!

How's parking there? Better off parking off Warner (back) entrance?

last night we parked on mounds blvd off of burns or whatever the street is there... lots of street parking, that's for sure.

Since I'm too much of a wimp to venture outside today, I've been re-reading the boards, the clues, and the maps. Can someone please tell me, and I'm sure it's BC but want to double-check, what park the spit of land is in that's next to The Great River Road, near Pig's Eye, and near Springside, Highwood and Skyway? (I'm looking at Google Maps.) Thanks:)

Sounds like he's desperately trying to be right...

No.. it's in Indian Mounds Park. Somewhere in the woods on the East end of the park, possibly in view of obbs bar and the pedestrian or high bridge.

That you can quote me on.

lol!

Hey, with all this new job talk, I wonder if I should go down to the press and ask if they're looking to hire a new clue writer.

I'll make sure it's a fun hunt, and none of this giving the park after a nice weekend nonsense.

Were you at caching last Sat? I'm surprise Ian or any of the other cachers didn't happen across it. How far does IM extend on the east end? I like that small patch of park way, way down next to Pig's Eye, next to the Great River Road but I doubt that's IM.

Really, this late in the game we don't have time for another shift. Sure, if there were four clues left, but logic dictates that the park is named today, and it has been. It's Mounds.

It sure was lonely in Como last night. Until today's clue, I really had a sure-fire explanation as for why it was there, and now that's completely evaporated!

I needed to find it last night, as I have no free time this evening to hunt.

Yup I was. I'm really curious as to how close we actually got to the medallion's location as we were caching out there. At this point, the only way to find it is pure luck, which I don't have a supply of, but still, I started the hunt, I'll see it through to the finish.

And just to clarify, I'm not saying the clues are bad. I don't know that yet. I'm just saying I didn't solve them. But I like Como. Two places to eat right in the park, clean indoor restrooms, and plenty of parking.

The funniest thing, is this is the year I went high tech. Took a GPS reading at each digging spot, came home, downloaded them onto a USGS topo, etc. I wanted to know just where I had been, and where I hadn't.

So, I've got a lot of points at Keller and Como, and NONE at Mounds.

I found a tea candle last night, and insisted on breaking it apart!

KC0GRN

I like your method, might just have to use it myself on upcoming hunts.

Shoot, have a GPS in your car and record your tracklog as you drive around, that would look interesting too.

Now if only I could tie medallion hunting expenses into a tax deduction....
Tue, 01/29/2008 - 1:26 PM Permalink
KC0GRN

Well, as best I can figure it, here's the search area. Somewhere where the lines meet up, or in between them. I'm not terribly sure. If I were, I'd be trying harder to get out looking.

I spent the morning searching through the hills, humming "The Hills are Alive with....." and only ran into a dogwalker. Lots of places no one has been yet and lots of places for a Medallion to be hiding. Saw a tree with a big #10 on it, but couldn't find one with a #12. Maybe it's there somewhere. Slippery footing back there.

I'll get the clue. I am lining up around 9 or 9:30. I'll probably go to the bar first to put all my clothes on before I line up. There will also be two people from the "vest-flashy" group in line. It is easier to do the conference call and read the clue if there are two people. Tim is going to hang with me for a while, but will probably leave before the clue comes out. If anyone else wants to assist in clue-getting, it would help.

Question re: the conference call - do we need a separate number for the call moderator?

I am going to try to use my blue tooth thingy. I hope I am loud enough. I'll call in at 10:45 to check my sound. If you didn't do this last year, the best thing is to be quiet and just listen to me read the clue. I'll repeat it a bunch of times and then I'll start trying to direct people to the right spot if I can figure it out. Last year, Tammy had lots of maps and stuff which helped to direct people. I'll try to replicate, but like I said, it is easier with two people to manage the phone, the maps, the paper, etc.

Also, after 10:45, please don't call me direct. Instead, call into the conference call.
