2008 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt

Submitted by Clue Master on
Going forward the next clues will come out daily at 6pm. They will be posted to the Allison Wonderland yahoo group at that time. They will also get cross posted to the Ableminds site and the Pioneer Press message boards, though possibly a little later.

As of last night the prize was up to $155 based on the number of registrations and donations taken in. One can still register for the hunt up through the release of the 4th clue. The cost is $10 to register and I anticipate the total prize will exceed $200. One can also hunt without registering, but then the prize is just $100. If you would still like to register, you can do so by Paypal to AllisonWondrland@yahoo.com or let me know you'd like to register and I can give you an address to send a check to.

There will be 12 clues, released one per day. The hunt will continue until the treasure is found. The medallion you're looking for is a disc that is white/clear in color, about 2 inches across and half an inch wide. It will not be hidden in or on water, up in a tree, underground, on the side of a cliff, inside anything electrical, inside a garbage can, or anywhere else that would make you ask yourself "Should I be doing this?" Once the treasure is found, call the phone number on the back right away, any time of day.

Clue#1

The hunt has begun, thus clue number one
Should hint at where the treasure hides
Best not to spill all, but let's say St. Paul
You can even find it in all your guides

Just look for some trees, not many of these
In any park so you're well on your way
To focus your vision, use some precision
Be counting from the start for the big pay

Clue #2

Some remedial math puts you on the path
Begin the equation by starting with a trinity
Count another two, then one more will do
Then put two and two together to mark the vicinity.

Clue #3

To be rude and abrupt, or even corrupt
Puts you on Santa's naughty list, not nice.
But this is the day you will find your way
If you can keep our vagueness on ice.

Clue #4

Stay true to your mark and look in a park
Where one can see land both low and high
Though it sounds funny, you’ll be in the money
If you lay bets mixed up and know why

Clue #5

It’s to the hider’s delight when the weather is white
As it keeps a buried treasure from view
But not all is on the ground, you should look up and around
And to the white add some red and some blue.

Clue #6

Rid of the fan, he ran and he ran.
There’s no doubt he was quite a talker
Mother Nature’s beau- the lawyers said so
Post finish, still serves a walker

Clue #7

Look and you can see most beautifully
A skyline with a splendiferous view
But that’s not enough for foes to rebuff
Play this clue right and you can score too.

Clue #8

Cheer up if you're lost or sensing exhaust
I promise there will still be more clues
Perform to your peak, and for what you seek
Watch for those who are playing the blues

Clue #9

No hunt for grandpa, get rid of the blah
This game is for those of a hip age like Reggie
He found the jewel hidden in Newell
So follow his lead and be a bit more edgy

Clue #10

A heritage to share will get you mostly there
As one should know what flows in one’s blood
And though it be punny to say it’s not sunny
Dig where the moon struck with a thud.

Clue # 11

On Indian grounds, and I don’t mean Mounds
Is the park that will take you to greater heights
There you’ll have to go and look through the snow
And soon you will find something that delights

The sign of Gemini you will have to spy
Keep asphalt never more than a few strides
Find just the right tree, it lines up you’ll see
And then you will conquer where it divides

Allison Wonderland

Clue #8

Cheer up if youÂ’re lost or sensing exhaust

I promise there will still be more clues

Perform to your peak, and for what you seek

Watch for those who are playing the blues

Exhaust suggests the smokestack clearly visible from the park while “playing the blues” is a hint to the playground with blue accents. But the more specific clue here comes from taking the first two letters of each line which spells out Chippewa, a street that runs right by the hiding spot.

Clue #9

No hunt for grandpa, get rid of the blah

This game is for those of a hip age like Reggie

He found the jewel hidden in Newell

So follow his lead and be a bit more edgy

The suggestion to be edgy is a hint to hunt closer to street than in the middle of the field. Also in the phrases “grandpa, get” and “hip age”, the word “page” can be seen. Page St. runs near the hiding spot.

Clue #10

A heritage to share will get you mostly there

As one should know what flows in oneÂ’s blood

And though it be punny to say itÂ’s not sunny

Dig where the moon struck with a thud.

The pun here is “Sunny” and “Share” which is meant to imply Sonny and Cher. Cher also starred in and won an Oscar for the movie “Moonstruck”. Cher’s heritage includes some Cherokee.

Clue #11

On Indian grounds, and I donÂ’t mean Mounds

Is the park that will take you to greater heights

There youÂ’ll have to go and look through the snow

And soon you will find something that delights

The sign of Gemini you will have to spy

With asphalt never more than a few strides

Find just the right tree, it lines up youÂ’ll see

And then you will conquer where it divides

The Indian grounds is another reference to Cherokee and then the clue is telling you the medallion is hidden in the snow. Gemini is the sign of the twins and in this case the twins are the twin picnic shelters. If you find a tree that you can line up that splits the two shelters and stay close to the road, you should be within a few feet of the treasure.

Clue #12

Well Jake was supposed to write this one and maybe he did, but he hadn't sent it to me yet so I don't have it here to post, but I'm sure it just would have told you specifically where to look.

Great clues and explains! - Well, that Clue 12 kinda stunk

I had a feeling there was word play in clue One, but I never figured out the cryptography - very clever! I forgot about the Vento Overlook and got hung up on the trail idea. Probably still feeling withdrawals from searching Phalen in January...

Did anyone pick up on Chippewa or Page?

I picked up Page eventually from "hip age," but I didn't catch the reference in the first line. That first line made absolutely no sense to either of us.

Didn't catch Chippewa either.

hers what I had for Swede:

Clue#1

The hunt has begun, thus clue number one

Should hint at where the treasure hides

Best not to spill all, but let*s say St. Paul

You can even find it in all your guides

Just look for some trees, not many of these

In any park so you*re well on your way

To focus your vision, use some precision

Be counting from the start for the big pay

==============================================

Spill = creek

hope "well" indians = swede

hint to find trees / well

not many of these in any park=stairwells? Swede? fountains? phalen creeks? Old folks homes? Water Gardens, forest, a big tunnel, an old train bridge, a little stream running into still pools of water, lots of steps, a rock-sculpture area, some wetland area

Fountain place is by swede hollow By east north street.

count at the begining = 7th street then 8th st (remedial math = counting) after that then swede hollow

=================================================

Clue #2

Some remedial math puts you on the path

Begin the equation by starting with a trinity

Count another two, then one more will do

Then put two and two together to mark the vicinity.

========================================

The Trinity is a Christian doctrine, stating that God is one Being Who exists, simultaneously and eternally, as a mutual indwelling of three persons (not to be confused by "person"[1]): the Father, the Son (incarnate as Jesus of Nazareth), and the Holy Spirit.

Churches near swede

trinity = 3 plus 2 more (3+3+3) then one more will do (ad another 3) get 12

12 flights of stairs at swede

12 steps= Cerenty Center at Swede

Cerentity was originally "Wilder" (corupt, abrupt) site founded by a Lawyer and later rebuilt by 12 churches into Wilder. Later changed to Cerenity (12 steps) Old folks home (grandpa)

=================================================

Clue #4

Stay true to your mark and look in a park

Where one can see land both low and high

Though it sounds funny, youÂ’ll be in the money

If you lay bets mixed up and know why

===========================================================

no Y? La bets/ la bets =tables anagram

Sounds funny = Minehaha

picnic tables?

know why: besides anagram, theres only tables in the upper part of the park

can see both low and high AND the park is low and high at swede

==========================================

Clue #5

Rid of the man she ran and ran,

They say she was quite the talker.

A carpenter's beau----many said so-----

Neared the finish with a walker.

Explanation: Ann Bilansky, convicted of killing her husband, Stanislaus ("the man" means Stan), escaped from jail and hid out near Lake Como in 1859. She was assisted by John Walker, the carpenter many thought was her lover. Both were caught; she was hanged the following year.

Ann Bilansky = nee Mary Ann Evards Wright

..... American who was the FIRST and only woman to be hanged in Minnesota when she was executed for the murder of her husband Stanislaus after she fell in love with her handsome nephew John Walker. She dosed her husband's soup with arsenic and within a matter of days he was dead. John Walker was also arrested but was released for lack of evidence

Cerenity Care Center / former Wilder (rude and abrupt) on Dellwood Place senior living community began in 1916, becoming a proud landmark of the historic and charming DaytonÂ’s Bluff neighborhood in East Saint Paul. It is conveniently located only one block from the quaint Swede Hollow Park and Restaurant, and two blocks from Metropolitan State University.

Clue 2 = 12 I think 12 flights of steps at Swede and 12 steps = Cerenity

put 2 and 2 together ( the 12 steps and Cerenity) to mark the vicinity

Wilder Residence East, 735 East 7th Street

Lawyer Samuel Mayall built his stone mansion on this site in the 1870's. After the Mayall family left the home in about 1903 it was used as the Nugent Institute, a drug and alcohol program that made the claim to cure or kill. Next it was the City Cycling Club headquarters. In 1908 it was the Parental School and Detention Home, which the neighborhood children called the "Bad Boys Home." Ramsey County soon replaced it with Totem Town. In 1915 the Home for the Friendless purchased the property, and replaced the old stone mansion with the south part of the building that Wilder still occupies today. The Home for the Friendless was started in Lower Town by women from 12 St. Paul churches in 1867 to provide a home for the destitute friendless women and children. They later changed the name to the Protestant Home. As the years passed they found that they were caring for more elderly folks. Today the Wilder Foundation operates the facility. Now it Cerenty Old folks home

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

GREAT view of the skyline from Swede Hollow...

Rebuff... Downtowner Carwash, right by Swede Hollow

This clue implies that the park has a great view in general, and that you can see downtown specifically. The last line means if you change “too” to “two” it means you can see not just one downtown, but two since you can see Minneapolis as well as St. Paul from SWEDE

Fountain Place was named because of the beautiful Victorian terraced landscape with gardens, pools, and fountain that graced the grounds of 614 Fountain Street. (not many of these in any park)

I want to start on a friday instead of saturday so we get more weekend hunting in (possibly) and the timing works better for my clues. I want to be able to release the clues at 3pm intead of 6. Should give more time each day to hunt.

I didn't much difference in my hunts between a $200 prize and a $500 prize. Although I think it would be nice to have a prize of at least $100. It's the three digits versus two thing probably, but it seems like a lot more money then. But more than the money, I think the real lure is the competition. I think we'd rather beat out 100 people for $50 than 5 people for $500 (well maybe anyway). I know I'm someone who tends to get busy and forget about these things once my hunt is done. Maybe it would be a good idea to compile a mailing list to remind people when it is coming up. Or in my case, if you post it to my Yahoo group I'll get the message and so will some others. And then if you get enough people, you should have no trouble raising $100 or more.

Or if you prefer a more radical idea, have the preparty at a bowling alley. I know Park Tavern will offer people several lanes of bowling for free if they're doing a fundraiser. Maybe other bowling alleys would do the same as long as you're ordering food and drink. So charge people like $10 to $20 for the bowling and the money all goes into the pot. Then you donate the pot to Como Zoo or maybe somewhere else where they offer donor bricks and whoever finds the treasure gets to have their name immortalized on the donor brick. Just a thought

mrmnmikey

I dunno about the brick idea, but I do plan on posting it on your site. (I take it thats ok?) Maybe I should make a post now to announce it and again closer to the time.
Wed, 03/12/2008 - 5:26 PM Permalink

That would probably be a good idea as then people could mark it down and maybe keep it in mind. But a reminder would be good closer to the date too.

AW and Jake, I finally got around to reading the clue explanations last night. I really liked this hunt...the way the clues and explanations seemed to fit in Swede, Vento, and Cherokee. It never ceases to amaze me, after reading the explanations, how we remain so confounded during the hunt. It all seems so logical afterward :eyeroll:
