My travel plans are a bit up in the air, but I'll keep you posted.

My original plan was to be in the cities from January 11-31. My SIL is having major surgery on the 12th, pre-dig on the 16th, the hunt, Drummer's senior percussion recital on the 27th in Grand Forks, and the rehash on whichever Sunday.

However...life is what happens when you've made other plans.

I took on a writing project that is due January 31.

I have to refinance my mortgage because the balloon that is due February 1 is, after all the discussion I had with the bank, not renewable. Not a huge problem once I sorted out my options, but I do need to be here to close, and I don't have a date yet.

I may be offered a six-month contract position with a Minneapolis company. If that is the case, I think they are going to want me to start in February, and I will be living in the cities for those six months. I am pretty sure I will rent a room from my friend Vicky, which is where I stay most of the time anyway, when I'm in the cities.

So, the good news is that I will be in the cities at some point soon and we can do pizza at Carbone's on Randolph.

The bad news is that I can't set a date yet, to do that!

my laptops...both of them...

had to uninstall virus software to get it to run like a top...omg..scary..

I don't know. I know a lot of techs that simply run their machines, back up everything important, and wipe the drive at the first sign of a virus, instead of running any antivirus software.

It's a catch 22 really. Most antivirus programs are resource hogs simply because of all the things they need to monitor. It's almost like the antivirus is as bad as having a virus.

so is norton. i can't stand anything that actively scans the entire hard drive.

the new one isn't as bad as the older versions.

We had no problem with Norton when we had broadband, but when we moved and had to switch to satelite internet (wildblue) we installed MacAfee and it completey bogged down our computer--- we might as well had dial-up. So we uninstalled it.

I had the same problem when I downloaded McAffe from comcast. Slow as molasses.

my theory is that antivirus software works great on desktops which people can leave on 24x7 the scans take place overnight so they don't interfere with using the machine. laptops that tend to be powered off overnight, not so much. when i worked for the maker of norton, i actually shut off the av and the backup of my laptop just because i couldn't use the thing while they were both running first thing in the morning.

the new version seems to only run when idle. I suppose that can be a problem for people that are either not idle or off.
Mon, 01/04/2010 - 10:36 AM Permalink
ares

yeah all the other versions i've seen do that too. only problem is that the machine can be "mostly idle" and still not usable because the disk access is slowing things down.

What irritates me? The fact that I have two sets of keys and managed to lock not one set but BOTH sets in my car tonight....What kind of idiot does that take?? UGH a locksmith bill is not what we need right now!

Mad_Dach5und

LAM - do you have a remote for the door locks? I'm just thinking you separate that from the keys themselves - increased chances of NOT locking them in...

As much as it may cost a locksmith to get you in, it can cost a helluva lot more to fix a broken window if you try to 'fix' it yourself... not to mention driving around during the medallion hunt with a saran wrap window...

if you've got full glass coverage on your car, my hammer and i can help you for a lot cheaper than a lock smith.

Would you WANT to break a window when it's this -20 weenie shrinker temp outside? The windchill inside the car driving it to the repair shop would be, well, like Mounds Park a couple years ago.

1) ball bearings released toward the windshield at a good speed

2) windshield mysteriously shatters from all the cracks

3) call insurance company and auto glass company; new windshield appears in your driveway

4) profit????

notice that glass-free movement of the car is not mentioned anywhere in this process.

not that i would seriously advocate this method of key retrieval.

HAHA y'all are funny! Actually we opted NOT to pay the extra for window coverage since we've never needed it before....needless to say both Mikes and I's windows have had to be replaced on these new vehicles (go figure) Called the lock smith out and I don't think he is very competant...He put these air bags in my doors to get them open stuck his stick thing in and has been messing with getting the button pushed for 45 mintutes? I feel like asking him if I can hold his stick and push my own button. :ooh: :pbpt:

Windshield may show up in driveway - cannot be installed in sub-zero temperatures. Adhesives need a couple hours to cure in a heated garage. The new glues are faster than the old ones, but they still don't work below zero.

Driving home during rush hour going south on 100 this am and having 2 out of 3 lanes shut down. Took me 45 minutes to drive less than a mile then when I get just about to the accident they cleared it and all lanes were open again after fighting to get into the right lane grrr.

HEY, the guy I used to open my car door was incompitent as well and used the same air bag system... he couldnt get the door unlocked and told me to contact Toyota and go get a key that can be returned to Toyota OR break the window .... I told him to take his tool and reach for my keys that were in plain view on top of my purse!!! IDIOT! he grabbed the keys and pulled them through the space he got opened with the airbag system.

can you see your keys!!??? get a coat hanger and reach for them.

Thinking I'm not making the hunt this year.

one possibility tho - if I walk into my attornies office on friday morning and she hands me a check for $30k or so.. I may make it.

lots of drama going on with the house that I was inheriting.

lots of drama going on with the house I live in. My house co-owner has picked up and walked out of our housing agreement, and left me with the entire mortagage. Which isn't the end of the world in the market today, except he took an equity line on the house I didn't know about and a bunch of other stuff.

Thankfully I have friends (2 sisters) who are accountant/financial/tax whizz's who love me and are trying to sort my life out.

on and another irriates:

lots of drama going on with my boyfriends ex wife and her sudden unveiling to the kids that:

a) she is getting remarried

b) they are trying to have a baby

These two items have left all three kids with more anxiety, one kid has had his head ticks come back where he jerks constantly, the little one is throwing tatrums constantly and the oldest one is frustrated and angry and in tears at the drop of a hat.

My heart hurts thinking about how the kids feel most of the time, they get off the phone with her, and if she's having a bad day she says something mean to one/all of them, and their little worlds just crash.

and oh yeah my personal favorite

c) her attorney sending a letter of appology to both of them because apparently her paralegal screwed up, and the court denied their paperwork... SO THEY ARE STILL MARRIED !!!

  • * C is almost a little bit of an enjoy tho, because I have now watched her fall FLAT on her face after making this big pronoucement of how she should have never gotten married, how she is now free as a bird, this that and the other --- and guess what? you aren't done yet!

Sudden unveiling that: a) she is getting remarried b) they are trying to have a baby

I haven't checked the Manual for a long time, but I believe THAT would be Symptoms #1 and #2 of being a Drama Queen

    - Getting remarried is an important enough announcement on its own.

    - Having a kid is important enough as well.

    - Saying both at the same time is a cry for attention - and a rather desperate one at that.

    agreed.

just feel so bad for the kids. They have been through so much, and now they are feeling more change. My guy tries to provide a stable, and calm home life, with routines etc so they have stability and structure.

i'm not a parent, i don't want to be their parent, but it just irks me to watch how she puts them in the middle of things and toys with their emotions to make her feel better about herself, and the sad thing is, from what I'm learning now - she did it before the divorce too.

don't have kids if they are only there to bolster your self estem.

Dust at the workplace. Coming in all shapes and forms. I don't have a specific allergy to dust, but I definitely have symptoms. In the last few weeks we've moved a lot of dusty furniture, emptied a lot of trash, worked extensively with fiberglass insulation, and had the kitchen floor re-tiled (as I speak). Eventually the air WILL clear, but...
