I have been looking at Phalen Park on Google maps street view for many days now and the only 'hill' I can see in that area is behind or on the south side of the Activities Center.

Clue 5 says "seek diamond in rough". Not *a* diamond, just "diamond". Well diamond is compressed carbon, specifically a C4 molecule. What if C4 is then a clue to the Civilian Conservation Corps Company momument?

Agreed. Lots of crusty snow out here and a decent amount of ground to cover. As you say there’s not a hill that stands out, some mild berms maybe.

Oh, that is pretty convincing actually, especially with "fields where children playeth". I remember a couple of slight hills in that area, unless they mean a snow bank. But there are also some definite street references further into the park. Clue 9 says they could see the arched light as they entered at night, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's where they stopped.

Oh, Frank and Earl, that's a good thought. I'm not so sure about the rec center area even if those streets are there. I kind of feel like the things they mention early on are often closest to the treasure and then they kind of work outwards until the very end. But you never know.

It’s fun to look on Google maps. You can see where the traffic is going. Wheelock pkwy going East and west before and after the south entrance to Phalen have been red and over at como by Churchill street and the streetcar station have been red. No red around Central Park or harriett island.

So I feel like going long means taking Phalen Dr. deep into the park. If you go as far as you can, there is a Do Not Enter sign on a road that is one way going the other way, which would make sense with them not steering you wrong. I'm not sure about "direct" but "dignified" would make sense with the China Friendship Garden at that spot. There is an arch at the entrance there. It's not lighted, but it has three Chinese characters on it and the middle one means "brightness". I think "No need to wade" means stay away from the beach house end of the park, and not working on your fade can be a golf term, saying stay off of the golf course too. So I'm still thinking it is on a path somewhere between the Lakeside Activity Center and the Picnic Pavilion, perhaps near Hoyt Ave.

Re: Clue 10

Kudos To the Phalen backers.

Won’t steer (wheel lock) cements it for me.

don’t work on your fade = away from golf
no Need to wade = not near water

go long could mean as in football, but I think “drag on” is a decent approximation - as in the dragon garden I was already at today!!! Oof

Is it odd or brilliant? Have to do something these days to keep absolutely everyone from saying, "Oh yea, that's Phelen!" So instead make a reference to the first place he lived. Likewise I'm leaning towards thinking last night's clue might have been about the 1992 ice palace just to make us think about the 1986 ice palace monument. Or maybe I sound to all of you like what some people sound like to me. lol

Well said. And yes I think the River center ramp is on or nearly on the site.

Ive thought it had to be that for a bit- my only trepidation is that it seems odd to reference the location of an event that happened so far from where the clue is supposedly sending us.

Freddie Mercury (Car) goes far, still fits this clue better than Phalen...but, I am never right. Which leads us to Queen and Victoria.
Queen Lyrics
"We Will Rock You"

Buddy you're a boy make a big noise
Playin' in the street gonna be a big man some day
You got mud on yo' face
You big disgrace
Kickin' your can all over the place
Singin'

We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you

Buddy you're a young man hard man
Shoutin' in the street gonna take on the world some day
You got blood on yo' face
You big disgrace
Wavin' your banner all over the place

We will we will rock you
(Sing it out!)
We will we will rock you

Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make you some peace some day
You got mud on your face
Big disgrace
Somebody better put you back into your place

We will we will rock you
(Sing it!)
We will we will rock you

(Everybody)

We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you

(Alright)

And then here is a story about Edward Phelen: St. Paul’s first murderer: Edward Phelan (probably) | MinnPost
Was Phelen a big star? He was one of the earliest non-native residents of St. Paul. He was elected as a delegate to the MN Territorial Convention.
Does his name go far? Phalen Creek goes far enough.
Phalen's initial land that he shared with John Hays stretched from Eagle St. to Robert St. That is where the murder allegedly took place and I believe there is indeed parking there right now.
10 years after being accused of murder, Phelen was charged with perjury (lying), thus becoming a disgrace.
Consequently he left town (and was killed by his travelling companions).

On September 27, 1839, Dakota boys found a body washed up under Dayton’s Bluff, near Carver’s Cave (Wakan Tipi).

The Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt is part of the St. Paul Winter Carnival every year. While the prize can only go to one winner, The Allison Wonderland is dedicated to the community spirit of treasure hunting. Here, not only will you find out about the Pre-Dig Gig, the Rehash Bash, and various other social events, but we also discuss the clues here in a team effort to decipher them (albeit not always successfully). This is a place to discuss ideas respectfully, report on what's happening "on the ground", and provide each other with useful information. This is a public group so expect that anything posted will be seen by everyone.
