Scribe, would those "technical difficulties" have anything to do with one certain monitor?

You know, I don't know if activities matter. I think that they give someone the medallion and tell them to hide it, I don't think there is a list of parks that they can't hide it at, they just use their own judgement. In 1978 (yes, I have been studying history) it was found at Harriet Island, and there was a bocce ball tournament going on about 10 feet from where it was hidden, so you just never know.

Yea, but that was 22 years ago. A lot has changed since then. Just think about population of the cities and popularity of the hunt alone.

Good point, but I think the parks near the end of the hunts have always been packed with people.

Everyone knows it will be at Como? Oh yes of course! The frog pond! Where else could it be?

That's correct. Just look at Conway last year and how long it took to find it with all of the people there. Whomever writes these clues and picks the park are very good at what they do.

Hello fellow hunters. This is my third year of hunting, and I am 14 years old. I just love to analyze the clues and then actually going out and hunting! I remember driving by Cherokee in 98' before anyone was there and telling my mom to pull over because I thought the medallion was at this park. Even though are purpose of driving around was to scout out potential sites, she did not stop. My dad and I returned after it was obvious and wondered about the actual end of the park (the boundaries) because we thought it ended in West St. Paul. Oh well it will be fun this year because of all the snow we just got! I hope it stays!

I would like to make it to the "pre-hunt bash" and meet fellow hunters. But sadley that night is my Grandpas 80th B-day party. As to pre-hunt predictions: Battle Creak Don't ask why I just think so. Also, I think this years writer will use the first letters in each clue to spell out the park as they did in 95.(I think it was 95)

Wed, 01/12/2000 - 10:22 PM Permalink
Jett

Battle Creek sounds good but I think I shall be starting at Highland. Why do you think they will use the first letters? It has been done already and people would be watching for it. I do agree though that it will probably be something similar. They will just put a twist to it.

Jakey,nope not the monitor,the "OTHER" technical difficulty!LOL!

Looky here people,I tell you it's gonna be at COMO,COMO,COMO!!! Thats my story every year and I'm stickin to it! and sometimes I'm right........about every ten years........:)

That is really funny scribe. Though after reading the way you have it written I see "Co Co Mo" for some reason, probably because I have been up since 5 this morning. You know like "Kokomo" the Beach Boys song. I know its quite a stretch but you know how some of these clues can be. So watch for it. You never know this could be the one out of ten you are right.

Treasure Hunti…

If I was hiding it, today would definitely be the day.

Just a casual stroll out into the park....nothing to see here, just a guy walking across the park bent over against the wind.....slip your hand out of your pocket for just long enough to let something WHITE slip down to the ground....never even breaking stride......

By morning not only will the medallion be completely buried, but so are your footprints.

Yes, tonight is the night.

This year will be a blast! Not sure that I have any idea where it's going to be, although, I can't help but to think there gonna somehow do some tie in to the word Millenium or 2000 or something, seeing as they are offering the bonus cash because it is the new millenium. I went through the maps today though and nothing hit me real hard. I guess it's just a bit early eh? Anybody tell me the time and the specs of the Pre-hunt bash? Also does clue come out at Midnite the 22nd on the net and in the paper?

No user inform…

It's been over twenty years since I did a hunt(been in the Air Force), so this year I must make up for lost time. Anyways, after reading these posts and talking to my sisters a bunch of hunt memories came a reeling back. 1967, searching with Dad one night on the Kellogg Mall. It was later found at the Fairgrounds. 1970, Dad driving down McKnight in the Battle Creek, area and seeing what seemed like thousands of flashlights glowing in the dark, the massive traffic jam on Upper Afton Road, and getting those hot chocolates at Grandma's afterwards. 1971, with Dad at Wakefield Park, first nights were Ok hunting, but by Friday that park was packed. I remember some hunters dismantling some buildings and a climbing light poles. Cops directing traffic on Larpenteur, Prosperity, and Frost Avenues. 1973, Phalen Park, not so much the hunt in itself, but the fact Dad was amazed after (then)twenty years, it was finally hidden there. 1976, Keller Park, those old World War II huts we saw mentioned in the clues. Finally 1978, Harriet Island, it was so cold. I also remember reading an article in the Dispatch around March or April 1972/73. The original hiders were retiring and, without mentioning their names, gave some interesting stories about hiding the medallion in those early years. I'll have to find that article the next time I am at the history center or the downtown library. As for medallion vs. Maplewood, I can see Maplewood wary, but I wonder if some of those parks are operated by the county, and not that city. Just a thought. Later folks.

Treasure Digger

A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go, ... Can't wait. I'd also say that the medillion is hidden especially after yesterday's snow fall. The weather is suppose to get warmer but not real warm. Believe me, I'm pretty sure the hunters is watching and will be looking at the expected weather forecasts for the next few weeks. My guess is that the last two years the medallion has been hidden in the south section and west section of Ramsey County. The west and north are due for their share in the hunting. Haven't really looked at my maps to give names of possible locations, but I have a feeling for those areas. Planning to buy daily papers and clipping each of them. Again, if anyone finds it. You must take pictures of yourself with it and make sure you have all that is required of PP. It's a great opportunity to find it, and everyone has the same chance as the next person to find it. Check in with you later!

Kevin, I loved your personal view of the hunts. You can't really know how it feels to hunt unless you've been there. And, I believe, you have to wait until it's over and then reflect back at what happened and what you experienced. We videotaped the last couple of hunts and it's amazing at what you see and don't see. Even listening to the sounds of the other hunters. So much is going on and it's easy not to realize it. My husband and I showed our tapes to relatives and they just couldn't believe their eyes. If the hunt was for gift certificates somewhere, it would have to be a good place and for a significant amount of money. No sliders for me. I'd do it for less, heck, I've done it for less. However, don't take me wrong. I enjoy it more with the $10,000 out there to grab. As far as the medallion being hidden, I have to agree with the medallion being as close to the ground as possible being the correct theory. The hiders want it to be less noticable as possible and covered. The medallion is usually dig over many, many times before it's actually found. It's almost a prerequisite to finding it.

Hey Shovelmaster how you doing, haven't talked to you in a while. I've still got your X-mas gift at home, if you are gonna be at the prehunt event I will try to get it to you there. Davannis never got back to me despite three different messages, I can only assume that means they aren't interested. We should probably get together here soon to discuss Medallion and our plans for that. I will try to call you this evening. BTW - How was Frisco? - I hope you have pics!

Oh yeah, btw - in case ya didn't figure it out - its me, the H-man!

there was quite the discussion about Phalen a day or two ago Mike. Check back a few messages and I'm sure you'll find some folks agreeing and disagreeing with you. Phalen certainly is big enough to house a lot of hunters. I think part of me doesn't want it to be there for that very reason! Too many possible places to search early on.

Hey Electric Duane, I hope your day significantly improves when you get a chance to play in all this new snow. tell Coty I say hi!

Is Linwood on St. Clair a park or a playground? There was a few people digging there last year.

Does the Watercooler crew have some sort of sign to show that they belong to the watercooler. I remember last year there wasn't one but I think there should be.

Whadda ya think?

There is one actually, kind of intwo stages. One is to wear something white, presumably something you would not normally be wearing outside on a winter's day. The most famous example was when someone wore a diaper on their arm. If you wish to be a little clearer, a white pithy (the type of "helmet" you often see a man wearing while on safari) has become something of a tradition.

The next time it will be in Rice Park is right after it's found in the frog pond!

Thanks for your concern, TT. If "The Man" keeps bringing me down like this, Electric Duane may have to become Acoustic Duane playing in the St. Paul skyway for change. I'm a man with a mission now, kids. Electric Duane will find the alleged medallion this year. I can feel it...mama needs a new pair of everything.

Come on guys don't you think it would be funny for the new wmillenium for the PP to throw us "smarts" a swerve and actually leave the medallion by the frog pond.

We'll all be in here laughing every time some rook comes in here wondering where it is before we direct them to the frog pond, only to have the PP laughing at us because it is actually there.

It does not have to be neccesarily be hidden in a park right? I remember the time when it was located at 35E and Victoria.

I shall check the frog pond! I am convinced that it will be there sometime in the next 5 years.

It would be the perfect ruse for the PP to "get" all of us, they put the medallion where we all joke about it being despite deep down inside feeling that the place is just too obvious.

Yes, but every year there is always some fool digging out there just for the sake of digging there, and if there ever is any indication that the medallion is in Como, the frog pond becomes the first, not last place many people go. Now if the first letter of every clue spelled out F-R-O-G-P-O-N-D-N-O-N-O that would be funny.

But it was just at Como recently. I say it will go back to the Highland area. Not the park itself, but maybe a small nearby one. And yes, that's my final answer.

I still say battle creak. It has been a few years since it was there. Phalen is also a good pre-hunt prediction.

What are some websites to get info on the medallion hunt?

Thu, 01/13/2000 - 5:15 PM Permalink
Tiny Thumbs

Tim, I highly recommend the treasure hunter's guide. It has great maps of parks within the city of St. Paul that indicate where things are in the park like picnic benches, tennis courts, softball fields, ice rinks and even trees and bushes as well as the surrounding streets. It tells you if there are statues or plaques dedicated to people and the dates on them. There is also a text description with each map that indicates what businesses/landmarks are nearby, whether homes or apts surround the park and what can be seen from the park. All in all, a very helpful tool as a hunter pulls out information from the clues. And the maps also indicate where pictures were taken which can be viewed on the website www.treasurehunt.8m.com. Check it out. The photos are great!

High of around 34 this weekend. That means say goodbye to alittle bit of this white stuff. But I'm sure we will keep some as a base before snow on Monday. So get out those shovels, brush off the dirt and tune them up. The hunt is almost upon us.
