2008 White Bear Lake Manitou Days Hunt

Submitted by ares on
Clue 1:

We bid you hello and exercise quid pro quo
We give hints and you employ creativity
Start thinking far for we raised the bar
And seek a place of increasing activity

Clue 2:

Bring a ball: it can be big or small
Walkers flounder and flounce
If you want to win, just jump right in!
You're bound to enjoy the bounce.

A placid body of H20 lies calmly below
The plants that burgeon to life.
Feed your hunger and feel a little younger
A party may relive your strife.

Clue 3:

The medal will be found near the underground
An Oriental structure to behold
Shining afar, those two northern stars
Guide you past the old gold

Clue 4:

You'll find that our den, while not "N"
Has quite an earthy array
Homes in a row, spot them as you go
Thinking nonhuman will win you the pay

Where the wind blows, nobody knows
A phrase "there, here" is not preferred
It's simply not true, but it's a solid clue
As a northeast breeze is all but assured

Clue 5:

A king and queen describe the scene
Both serving those on the run
He's since gone but she lives on
Now what's done is done

Clue 6:

What will be our fate in the year 2108
Consult your crystal ball, what do you see?
Do you view flying cars and migration to Mars?
Likely not, 100 years isn't that far away

Jesse hides this one too, so I'm posting this from the street around the corner from his house waiting for him to go for a jog.

Polar Park. That's "far' and has lots of activity. WBT's 150th celebration activities were all there.

Do we know for sure that the township is in play?

I cannot find it online (Kitch?), but the supplement to the Press Publications that I got last week about Manitou Days has an article on Page 4 from Jan Holtz Kraemer @ Coldwell Banker saying "a palm sized flat plastic medallion labeled with the words "Manitou Days" and "Coldwell Banker," hidden somewhere in White Bear Lake, White Bear Township, Birchwood, or Mahtomedi."

She organized the hunt for the past 20 years.

Also, the Township's board members are the Grand Marshalls: http://presspubs.com/articles/2008/06/11/vadnais_heights_press/news/doc484fdc21c8fcf338745421.txt

Alright, I'm heading out for a bit, the only parks with gazebos that I can think of are railroad park and matoska.

barefootguy

I went to Matoska Park, West Park, and Railroad Park today. I don't like any of them. I can't fit the "two northern stars" and "old gold" to anything in those parks.

I think I might go the the coldwell banker office to get this one in writing, I might have not copied it perfectly from the phone recording.

A weather vane that's stuck pointing northeast?
Sun, 06/22/2008 - 7:04 AM Permalink
barefootguy

There is a weather vane on top of the gazebo at matoska, but i didn't notice if it was stuck. Also, the not N part sounds like it's in the southern part of the city.

I'd say a lake is north east from the site. That assures a NE wind?

Dunno, I'm not really hunting this one.

Northern star Bob Dylan? Judy Garland? Highway 61 guides you past?

Where the wind blows, nobody knows

Bob Dylan=blowin in the wind?

Folow 61 till you see homes in a row?

Old gold cigarette pack?

Garland as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz (1939)Garland soon landed the lead role of Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Shining afar? In 1954, Garland filmed a musical remake of A Star Is Born

I think its hidden inside of a Blizzard....

I may have to go look inside of one now....

Mr. Med Hunter

That would probably be Wedgewood Park in Mahtomedi. I haven't seen the rules, but think that Mahtomedi is fair game for this hunt. I'd try this park if I had time. I haven't tried tying the other clues to it yet.

barefootguy

Well, Wedgewood is definitely the park. I went out there during lunch. There is a pagoda shaped picnic shelter with a broken weather vane on top, stuck pointing SW, ergo, a Northeast breeze. There were maybe 5 other people out there looking today.

That's too close to my house not to check it out. I'll maybe be out there about 8:30ish.

Word to the wise ~ it's also very close to the reigning champions coffee shop in beautiful downtown Willernie.

all the more reason for someone to meet up with me tonight or this afternoon and hit it hard!! any takers I would have to meet you some place in WBL just off 35 as to keep my life of a free man free!! :eyeroll:

tim_the_hunter

They're pretty good. You said you were heading out around 8:30? Give me a call when you get there we can meet up!
Mon, 06/23/2008 - 12:29 PM Permalink
Mr. Med Hunter

I really like this last clue. "what's done is done" is the Dunn Brothers coffee that located in the old Burger King store.

I have a visitation in St. Paul and should be back in WBL by 8 or shortly after. I'll call you tonight.

tim_the_hunter

Sounds good. I'll get up there around 7:30 or so and get a good look around.

Anyone going out to look should definitely wear long pants, as the thing is probably hidden in the tall grass/reeds by the pond.

P.S. if the thread gods could put clues 4 and 5 at the top that would be nice.

and I was gonna mention I thought it was a broken weather vain - cool!

good noodling. Don't you all think it would be found by now since you got the park nailed? I wanna drive out there but it's only $250 and I got 3 hrs sleep Sat night and 5 hours sleep last night. I know I'll probably drag myself out there- thats what we do. and I recall last year it being hidden in nettles and tall grass?

Go coolers!
Mon, 06/23/2008 - 2:02 PM Permalink
barefootguy

I have wiffle ball so I can't look tonight. I think it will take at least a few more clues, it's a pretty big park and searching through the tall grass and reeds is really slow going. They haven't really pinpointed where in the park it is so it's pretty much just a crapshoot right now. That being said, I'll be out there tomorrow after class.

Spent about 1.5-2 hours out there with Jesse Tammy and Iceman. Iceman found a Haro bike ($$$$) so Tammy called the police and they can get it to the rightful owner. Jesse found a golf ball, a baseball, and a tennis ball he really has a propensity for sniffing out balls. We saw another group of 4-5 that was out there quite a while otherwise not too many other hunters. There is a ton of brush/woods that it could be in around the lake and if it's hidden well it will be very hard to find. I'm probably done with this one due to the long drive but good luck to the rest of the coolers!

damn... nice finds...

I had a Haro mountain bike, back in the day, that somebody jacked out of my garage...

it was the only thing they took, too...

It was the last one being sold, at this store that was going outta business, in Maplewood, when I was in 10th grade...

I got a sweet deal on it, something like 230 bucks, and it was easily a 6-7 hundred dollar bike...

paid for it all, with grass cutting loot too..

was damn pissed when that thing went missing
