BTW Ares and Ian. I have been to that airport at St.Marten (spelling depends if you are on the French or Dutch side of Island.) Those pics are real but actually quite common. That approach is the only way into the runway, because what you don't see is that it's a very very short runway and at the other end is about a 5,000 foot mountain range. They actually have to take off towards the mountain carrier style. The pilot holds the brakes, applies max power, waits until the engines are at about 90% power and makes a run at it. The minute you are airborne they have to do a wicked turn almost to the side to avoid the mountains. Speaking from personal experience you do NOT want to be hung over when you take off from there. The landing is a piece of cake if you compare the two.

Ares, it is scary to most normal people, So of course I actually thought it was kind of fun. But the hangover from drinking Red Stripe until 4:00 a.m the morning before didin't help any. Actually when I was there you could walk right down to the beach and have the planes fly right over while you lay on the beach, they had warning signs up and all but that didn't stop me. Of course not realizing what would happen I stood there after talking my wife into going down there. We waited as a 757 approached I thought it was very cool to watch his appraoch, that was of course until the jet wash hit us and coated both of us with a combo of sand, seawater and the drinks we were holding. My wife said nothing, she didn't have to, she only gave me that look that says I can't believe I let you talk me into this you moron. Oh well, live and lean. Next time I think I'll stick to the clothing optional beaches. (Mine stay on of course as I'm sure the whole island would thank me collectively)
all i know, luv, is that i've been spending a lot of time in the cockpit of a 747 in the latest version of ms flight sim. i've actually learned quite a bit from it. specifically:
1) runway 4/22 at msp is barely long enough to land one of those things on
2) if you come in with sufficient airspeed and decent rate, you can actually touch down and bounce over the top of the md80 you were supposed to follow in!
I couldn't believe that they could even get those things in there. The airport is essentialy an open roof tin ploe barn. It didn't look real modern so I wonder if they even had I.L.S to do the approach with ? I think that's why they have to do such a low approach due to the short runway. I wonder if your sim would let you land there ? That would be cool, let me know if they do.

The airport is right on the Island of St.Martin/ St.Marteen spelling depends on which side of the island you are on. Half the island is ruled by the Dutch and half by the French. (they actually have a border right down the middle of the island. It's loacted in the Dutch West Indies. The airport is on the Dutch side where we stayed. Let me know if you find it and are able to attempt a landing. I can see the local sitting on the beach------ Oh craap maan here come da' Ares man tryin to land big plane whhooo man.
Side note the Dutch side is nicer and plus you don't have to put up with French people :) We did go over there but I was glad I stayed on the Dutch side.
