IF we can get something printed using non-toxic color it would be fine.
I think we need to be careful about stickers or any other choking hazard.Â
Cost being a factor, I'm guessing plain plastic shovels should be just fine. At least it won't cause tooth decay or choking - and they can use them to play.
lisa....i'm sad about the whole vulc thing. That's just wrong. I know they have a smarmy rep, but if that's true, they're assholes. What happened to the thing me2 said about this year's vulcs being all about the kids? I still support the idea of the vulc, but don't have to support the guys wearing the costumes if they pull that kinda crap.
I LOVE CANDY. that's all I have to say about that. It's just a general comment and has nothing to do with the parade. thank you.
How about if ESD comes up with a smaller version of the "new" logo for use on headbands and such? Maybe the two Cs with snow and one shovel? Just an idea.
OH!  I forgot my .02 on candy or schlak to hand out in parades or elsewhere....(not that anyone probably cares)....
But I am with Scribe on this one. No candy....not just the throwing of it. Just too much risk to take if some kid eats something and gets sick and what the parents see is your lovely logo on the wrapper....
I think if we do some looking, there's a TON of choices of other types of things to hand out to kids AND adults. I love the Rice St. parade, cause they DO still let them throw stuff (okay, I guess they're not really supposed to anymore, but they do). Some of it's cool stuff. I mentioned to a couple people the idea of a fridge magnet for one. Sounds kind of corny, but I know MY fridge has a bunch of 'em from various businesses and groups. It seems like a lot of people are so intent on keeping the riff-raff out, I bet (believe it or not) there are lots of good hunting people out there that haven't stumbled on us yet.
That's just one idea. Keychains is another. And I like the little shovel idea too.
At least the plastic won't do too much damage. I laugh when I think about that, Scribe. My kids used to do that sort of stuff all the time. Drove me nuts. So glad someone else's kids are angelic in the same way.
I have a bold Idea. And since Big G is stealing my material (Redbear: the original super fancy) I better write this out.
Â
My understanding of this larger debate was that we were thinking of putting together a FAMILY FRIENDLY crew to roustabout town and to gain the group more exposure.
Additionally, we talked about the idea of having a hall of fame - where you'd get nominated, etc.
Â
So why don't we do both? Scribe and I are of the same mind, that if we find it, we keep it and have the money given to charity. Timmers was even talking about setting up a 501(c)3 to not pay taxes on the chairitable dough. So let's make us an all-star team.
Next year, for hunt 2006 - we crown the first royal order of the Cooler Crew. The best of the best of the best 7, nominated by their peers in the crew, to find the medallion and capture it on behalf of the crew. Everybody can hunt like usual - but we get the best together for finally the Cooler Crew to put our money where our collective mouth is - because say what you will, the score is still medallionators 1, crew 0.Â
I think this should be a co-ed thing - this year, we work on getting a sponsor, we get into the parade next year - and hopefully, the Royal Crew will ride with the medallion in tow.
Â
Then, people can dress like they want. But let's put our best foot forward, literally - and get it while we're promoting what we're all about next year.
Â
-Just a thought. Because I really don't want to see a Cooler Crew of blue village people. (but...official color: Cooler Bleu?) Success leads to everything else.
I need to leave the discussion of logo/next year/parade/candy. I trust Pay Me to setup the contest. I will vote. I will buy a headband and a baseball cap - maybe a neckwarmer or something else. I'll bring a bunch of flashy stuff to the pre-dig, but not enough for everyone. Depending on how much I buy, I may charge to cover my costs (not make a profit).
Everything else I can worry about in 10 or 11 months.
well this idea is kinda 'out there', but I was just thinking about how some people want the crew to hunt as a group, and knowing thats not going to happen. also, several people say it's not about the money. so I was thinking we could set up the non-profit, jump through those hoops or whatever, then have a signup sheet for people that would join a group of cooler members that would swear to donate the medallion to the cooler crew charitable fund or whatever. it would be by choice only and I wouldnt expect a lot of people to do it, but a few might. I also don't know how feasible it really is, just brainstorming.
I think thats what Leelabell is saying MM. If you wanna pitch in on that sorta stuff just pick up what you want next year and bring it to the PDG. They you can share what you want or trade.
As far as stuff just for the crew it's easiest that way.
I agree on becoming a more organized crew, but I disagree with the putting together a special crew to hunt...hello??? We ALL hunt. There is no best of the best of the best. What about those who would be left out because they have to work? Or have kids to watch? We're all different and even though we're all in this together, we should continue to hunt like we have. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm not so crazy to find the thing that I'm going to start discluding people or voting for people or whatever just so we have a better chance. I want my own shot at it, I don't want to wait for someone to vote me in to have a shot. If any of us finds it, individually or in a group, I claim it as a crew victory.
Well this year for the hunt I didn't have a whole lot of cash because of the whole job transition and what not.. but next year will be different.. so I'll be able to participate more on that aspect...and I guess I just feel kind of bad because I didn't have a whole lot to contribute this year.
here is my .02. In order to become organized we need to accomplish things. Why dont we concentrate on the logo/crest for the next few weeks. I will have a thread started to keep that going. Once we have decided on a logo/crest then we can figure out our basic wear. By basic I mean hats, headbands, jackets, whatever.  If we have a lot made it may take some time. From there we start making decisions about organization. By becoming non-profit we could do a lot more for charity during the rest of the year as well. If a crew member finds the medallion and decides to donate it yeah! By this time I assume it will be summer...then we can start planning parade activites as well as goofy costumes and such.....This is just my take. Maybe trying to accomplish one thing at a time....
G the point is basically to have a revolving, ever changing bunch to work together and to go to promotional events, etc. that's a good representation of the group as a whole. You don't stop hunting just because we have a visible bunch for the press, of course not! And we pitch in to help with the kids and the families and stuff, just like we always do.
I think everyone's just excited about the new ideas... but Leela and PayMe are right... we really should just take one thing on at a time.. rather than be overwhelmed.
If I become rich between now and next year's hunt, I will donate it to charity. As it is, I donate to quite a few charities, but nothing as huge as $10,000. I would not be a jerk and definitely donate some of it to one or two charities, but not that much. I'm poor. Seriously. I would also have to split some of it with my hunting buddies. They're like charity. Poor scribe needs a "save the sticks" fund.
You go Steph! Organize away! :) Let me know if you need anything.
ok I screwed up by using the word charity. I meant donating the money to the cooler crew non-profit to be used as operating money for things such as clothing/hats/floats/candy!?!/etc...
and I agree it would be a huge task to undertake and am not saying it would even work, just shooing ideas out there because as far as I am concerned the logo thing was figured out like 3 million posts ago, we're just waiting for the entries...
I need to scoot and put myself undercovers...but before I do I'd like to share these thoughts - random and otherwise.
We just came off a really good hunt. The movie was fabulous. All the stuff with Zephy made us all feel like we were a part of something truly unique and special. We got good press as a group.Â
We got there because of what we are currently...not because we're organized, have royalty, have a sponsor or wear strange outfits. We hunt. We hunt together and individually. We noodle clues and sometimes get to the right park. We support each other through good times and not such good times. We have made some lasting friendships.Â
If I were to find the medallion, I'd turn it in because that's the tradition of the hunt. I would also not turn down the $$$.Â
I am concerned that by changing what we are and how we're organized, we'll change the flavor and the purpose of this group and will end up disconnecting from what makes us special in the first place.Â
It's not what we wear, it's not what we have beside us, it's what we are individually and collectively that is important and makes us unique.Â
We got there because of what we are currently...not because we're organized, have royalty, have a sponsor or wear strange outfits. We hunt. We hunt together and individually. oohhhhhh......leelabell... now you went and said it :)
oh, I'm sorry. Are you his wife?
I don't know how to exactly meet the free guys in here.Â

:::sigh:::
Or in the case of my boys...to beat each other over the head with...:)
Wow, then my boys could join in.  a beat your brother in the head with a shovel party!!!
GreenTeam - the only way to make this fair is to have all the graphic designers submit something and then vote.

Gonna have thx open the voting/submitting thread. I will post the basics in there.Â
Yep... everyone who wants to contribute can. Then it's up to the crew as a whole to decide. The original logo will be part of the pool to choose from.
If the majority wish for it to remain then there will be no problem.
You'll poke your eye out!
j/k
Idon't know how to exactly meet the free guys in here
I may not be free but I'm cheap as hell baby!  ;-)
Ok.... I vote to discuss candy in like November.

Everyone gives out Candy...
We can be *different* though! When we find the right unique trinket, I think we'll *know*!
"You'll poke your eye out, You'll poke your eye out!" I've got A Christmas Story in my head now! Thanks!
for the shovels... hit up the dolla store :) prolly the cheapest way to go on that route unless someone can find a place to buy em in bulk.
I have a bold Idea. And since Big G is stealing my material (Redbear: the original super fancy) I better write this out.

I always thought maybe the money should go half to the finder half to crew activities.
Maybe in the future the crew can find itself doing more for the community and use that money just for that.
Or to fund parade stuff etc.
I think that the finder should at least take something away from having been the one to have it in hand. (Besides the honor)
Of course the finder can keep all the moeny if they wish too. I mean you find it, you do with it what you want.
