if tim wants to rejoice bear's departure over in your clubhouse, that's fine with me. but it has no place over here. grow a spine, for crying out loud.

I really gotta wonder if this who issue between Area/Otis and Tim/Bear is a lot deeper that we think...

the reason I'm saying this at all it the quote "gotta take a stand" thing is bothering me...

I've said this before and I'll say it again...time should heal all wounds but at times I really wonder...this entire fourmn is a walking time bomb....

All this shit goes way back...I honestly don't give a shit about the past. (is why taking a stand bothers me things change over time)

Personally I don't give a shit about the B.C. why...they have asked me to have access to their threads...I don't want to even look...why...not sure...I just know I don't want to....I've told them that.

but I know one thing for sure....Ots can turn his back on anybody...I know for a fact he never talks about this crap going on even with his wife (I respect that) (amazed more less)

hell I wanna talk about the stuff with anybody..I can't keep my mouth shut....

this shit about Nick, TMK, MM, me, ESD, Randy, Redbear, Tim, and all the others is just that....nothing that I need to have FESTERING WOUNDS OVER!!!! My job sucks I get talk to the scum of the earth daily...I get death threats daily...I've learned to realize that even if somebody doesn't like me I'm not going to take it out on others or even them.....

this all goes back to my FIRE examples...why feed fires with old issues and feelings its not worth our time or effort....heck nothing is going to change from the past....

learn from it and move on....

what the hell kind of place are you trying to create here, guys? do you want it to be happy? do you want it to grow? do you want it to be a fun place for everyone?

answer honestly. i truly hope that the answer is yes to all of them, and if not, can you say why not? if so, how can you justify that the departure of someone from here is something to rejoice about? because i just don't get it. i don't want to play master and commander either, and i certainly don't want to silence people unnecessarily, but jesus how can any of you sit back and say its ok?

This had damn well be a happy place.

We can't control what Tim feels or his opinions. His opinions and feelings are his and his alone.

If he or anyone else expresses themselves in a way I might disagree with, I can say something like I don't agree. I'm sorry to see you feel that way and then move on. I'm not about to get into an discussion about it beyond that. A difference of opinion is just that. If others chime in to make that same observation, fine. If not, it is left as is.

Spending time arguing about those differing opinions makes, for what I have seen as reasons others have left for a time. No one wants to see bickering.

It's one of the things I have appreciated about our processes here. I can voice an opinion that I own. I can express my feelings which I own...and then we can agree to disagree and move on.

see and thats the thing, terry. 99.9% of opinions i don't care about. but opinions like that aren't conducive to making this a happy place. (and before anyone accuse me of any hypocricy, yes, i have done my fair share of contributing to not making this a happy place, and i intend to cease it). and quite honestly, if even my wife posted something like that, i'd be on her case the same way. there's simply no excuse, in my opinion, to voice an opinion like that in a public forum. if someone's got a private forum they want to do that in, express away, but that has no place here.

Spending time arguing about those differing opinions makes, for what I have seen as reasons others have left for a time. No one wants to see bickering.

you're quite right (see parenthesized statement above).

I would add one thing to my possible reaction on a public forum to anyone celebrating something I thought inappropriate...

"As far as I'm concerned, everyone is welcome here and it saddens me to think anyone would want to leave."

Often that sort of response would have others joining in the sentiment and thereby reducing the effects and effectively shutting up the bad mouthing.

When it gets to be bickering, it's much harder to respond in a way that isn't continuing the bickering.

I've been wanting to post, but I've been busy with other things. I'll try to post as best I can in the short time I have on my lunch.

I feel that the Cooler Crew is a different thing for each person. Basically, we all have a general idea that it should be nice and fun and happy. Each person has a different perspective, a different definition of this. AW made some good points. The Cooler Crew has changed from what it originally was. The time and the technology has changed things. Other forces have changed things. I really liked his use of the word "professionals". We are in a sense professional treasure hunters when it comes to the treasure hunt. To us, we take it more like a job, more professionally then the average Joe.

In the early timeframe of the Cooler Crew, we were fine with being professional with each other. It was early in the being of the Cooler Crew, we didn't have the relationships that were as deep as they are now. As time went along, with more hunts, more mock hunts, more doing things together throughout the year, relationships got to be stronger. We came to have preferences of people that we enjoyed spending time outside the hunt with, and those who we "tolerated". I think what transformed the mood of the Cooler Crew was the revealing of the Breakfast Club and what they said about people. We all have groups in here. There's the Breakfast Club, the Puck Posse, Geocachers, Medallionators, various other groups. That's fine. And we're not going to be expected to like everyone, agree with everyone, have fun with everyone. There are going to be differences. The Breakfast Club had kept it private, as well as other groups. But then that info came out, and that just opened up wounds. Yeah, we've worked on healing them, but they probably will never heal.

Now there are people who know that others don't like them, that they don't agree with them. There have been hurtful things that have been said, which probably won't be gotten over. Lines have been drawn, teams have been formed in a sense. It's like it's become more acceptable or more open for us to be hateful or disrespecting to each other. What once was hidden is now out in the open, that distaste for others on the board. Instead of being for the best interest of the cooler, it can be more about the best interest of the individual or the group. We all have our differing opinions, and with having true feelings out in the open, it's just making it harder to compromise and be nice to people. It's like people are having to choose sides. I think people are having a problem with standing up to friends for what they believe in. Or that others aren't accepting what that person believes in.

The Cooler Crew isn't about one group, nor should it be. I think we've gotten away from what the Cooler Crew was initially, and has gotten more into what we think it is. To me, the Cooler Crew was a welcoming community for people, for fellow hunters. We were all newbies, lurkers who decided to join the group. Look at it from a newbie's perspective though. If we have open distate and hate, comments that are disrespectful, hateful, is that what we want to convey to people? I thought we wanted people to be safe when they came here, open to post about things. Now how many people are we scaring off? We have become accustomed to being here. There are more people who post throughout the year, and we know people's habits, more about their lives. We have to realize that someone new isn't always going to know that two cooler members are joking around saying bad things to each other sarcastically. What are they supposed to think when someone applauds the fact that someone else is leaving here for good? I don't find that to be very welcoming as a community.

I don't want to be the thought police. This is America, we're free to think and feel what we want. I just don't know if how people are expressing their feelings is conducive to the community as a whole, what we want to represent and convey. I think things that are negative on the forum should be dealt with in private. People can have difference of opinion. They can get along in public by not speaking to each other, keeping their distance, putting on a good face. Why can't we do it here? Why do we have to accept it? Is it really something that is adding to the community as a whole? Why can't it be expressed in a different way? I'm not trying to blame anyone here, I'm just trying to figure out how we can make this place more welcoming, more happy and fun for people.

I agree Terry. You toss out a statement that people can easily agree with without feeling like they're taking sides, and the problem fizzles on it's own.

To me, stifling someones opinion is more non-inviting than not.

We are in a sense professional treasure hunters when it comes to the treasure hunt.

and i have every intention of keeping track of mileage spent on the hunt this year, considering there's a profit motive behind this hobby of ours, and if we find it we're gonna pay taxes on the winnings. consult a tax adviser to determine whether or not it applies in your specific case.

Hi Everyone,

I saw Kitch's posts about access and figured it would be more appropriate to discuss exactly what you want in here, so Here I IS!

My understandind is that you want to block all non-paying people from reading in here... so I have a few questions.

1. Do you want them to see folder and discussion headers, but not be able to read any posts? Or do you want them to have no access whatsoever?

2. Is this a permanant solution or something temporary?

3. If, you still want the folder to be visible to an extent, do you want a particular message displayed if they attempt to enter?

well, tim, cm put together the welcome home folder, which is where we point or people who are new to the site. ideally, we'd have a publically viewable thread telling people what to do to get in, while having the rest of the threads invisible to unpaid and guest users. managing our "top-level" threads here is a pain without a set of acl's.
Mon, 01/09/2006 - 8:02 PM Permalink
Clue Master

That sounds about right. Make the whole thing invisible. And it could revert back after February 2nd.

I guess I don't see THAT many new posters since we'll have to see how many will pay to lurk/post. We've never done it this way before. It'll be interesting. Either way there will be a bunch more posts than our normal selves.

We will be pimpin this place at all the old familiar places to let people know where we are. We already have seen that the $ is a small factor to some of the annual posters. Although I see a lot of garbage being posted in those old forums so some might have a change of mind come clue 5.

Ok, I've created the Paid access group, which includes all who have paid.

I've set your forum to allow those who are in the paid group access to your forum, and set other registered users to no access.
