Nah, you're not totally SOL.

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=SEARCH&Ntt=hard+drive+enclosure&N=0&Dx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&D=hard+drive+enclosure&No=0&Ntk=All&product_code=312100&Pn=USB_2_0_3_5_inch_External_Hard_Drive_Enclosure

You can get one of those. Depends on if your data's worth 30 bucks. On the bright side, you'd have a external hard drive of your own that way...

Worst case scenario, would your wife let you tinker with hers long enough to transfer the data off your old PC hard drive?

I already have it on her external drive. Guess I'll have to either leave it there or just put it on my new hard drive, or buy a external for myself. It's not like I really need all the space on my new drive. (250 gig)

net-neutrality is a real concept. In fact I'd be amazed if kitch didn't already know of it.

The ebay email is valid. However it was sent around in improper channels, and the email address it comes from isn't very compelling either. I deleted the email as I thought it was phishing. I did find it odd that they tried to get your ebay id and password to authenticate you to some online petition thing.

Netneutrality is a big issue actually. The senate has been tossing a bill around that would effectively create a fast lane and slow lane on the internet. Companies and individuals would have to pay a premium to get connected to the fast lane, which provides faster downloads and all that. If you don't pay extra, you get relegated to the "slow lane".

Personally I think that sucks, but it's getting backed by a LOT of companies with big spending dollars and teams of lobbyists working to get the senate to pass the bill.

What netneutrality is is a push for the senate to reject this bill. Like the name states, it's what we should be asking for, as this would keep the net equal for everyone, not cut into different pay to surf rates.

I thought the email was PHISHING...

I mean it looks weird they want your ebay password and id...looks like standard PHISHING TO ME...

Yeah, if they were trying to bolster support, they should've put something on the website, or the auction pages...

ebay spams their customers all the time. or at least targets people who bid on specific types of items. tis a fact of life. that email was legit, as i received it in the "my messages" section of ebay.

I never got the message. But then again, yahoo blocks a lot of spam.

can hurricanes cross the equator? i.e., can a hurricane formed in the northern hemisphere cross into the southern, and vice versa?

Are you worried about hurricanes crossing the equator ? ok...I'll answer this one the best I can...

The Coriolis force is what we call an apparent force - it handles the problem that the earth is spinning and thus a point on the globe is always changing direction or always accelerating. You may also view Coriolis as a consequence of the conservation of angular momentum. At the equator you have a great deal as you are rotating about 25,000 miles in a day while someone on the poles is not moving anywhere in the same period. From your and my perspective air, rockets, and aircraft, are all deflected to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern. (Yes, they correct for Coriolis when they shoot artillery shells!) The Coriolis "force" is a maximum at the poles and zero at the equator.

Observations show that no hurricanes form within 5 degrees latitude of the equator. People argue that the Coriolis force is too weak there to get air to rotate around a low pressure rather than flow from high to low pressure, which it does initially. If you can't get the air to rotate you can't get a storm. This is a reason why genesis does not occur at low latitudes but it does not explain why a developed hurricane does not cross the equator..

Could a hurricane cross ? Yes, because a well developed storm has plenty of spin that would dominate the weak Coriolis force near there. If it crossed the Coriolis force would be working against the initial direction of the spin, but it would be dominated by what we call the relative vorticity of the storm. Have we seen this happen ? Hurricanes can move south and get close to the equator but I cannot find an example of one crossing in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific. In the Indian Ocean some come closer to pulling off this trick. Why don't they cross ? The variation in Coriolis with latitude - called the Beta effect - actually will move a hurricane to the NW in the northern hemisphere even if there is no large scale wind pushing the storm along ! So, Coriolis not onlyseems to be a necessary ingredient to make a storm, but it may also pull them away from the equator making the crossing event a tough one to pull off.

Cooler - thanks Kitch! You're so good and smart too!

That is what we ended up using when we submitted a new proposed test method to ARMA

for the steep slope committes review on Wednesday. A phd wanted to use "Algal" and I suggest "Algae" and it was a big debate. But we did some research and ended up using algae

very cool indeed. i was just curious because i knew the physics "theoretically" make it impossible, since the coriolis effect would immensely act on the storm and work very hard to make it spin the other direction. which raises the next question: what is the definition of "cyclonic" at the equator.

I think the hurricanes are either too polite to cross, or they get confused like toilets and aren't sure which way to spin.

anticyclone—An atmospheric anticyclonic circulation, a closed circulation. The wind in an anticyclone is in the clockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

With respect to the relative direction of its rotation, it is the opposite of a cyclone. Because anticyclonic circulation and relative high atmospheric pressure usually coexist, the terms anticyclone and high are used interchangeably in common practice.

and there it is:

anticyclonic rotation—Generally circular motion of a mass in a sense opposite to that of the earth, that is, clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, undefined at the equator.

one of the more interesting things I've had asked...

but this one makes the most sense...as to why

Nicotine acts as a sort of muscle relaxant that can actually permeate your ear canal and through the eardrum (Tympanic Membrane). “Nicotine also increases the level of other neurotransmitters and chemicals that modulate how your brain works. For example, your brain makes more endorphins in response to nicotine. Endorphins are small proteins that are often called the body's natural painkiller. It turns out that the chemical structure of endorphins is very similar to that of heavy-duty synthetic painkillers like morphine.” (http://www.howstuffworks.com/nicotine.htm).

here are a few other wifetales of medicine for an earache

Earache

# A hot foot bath with a tablespoon full of mustard in it often gives relief.

# Blow cigarette smoke in ear. Put warm sweet oil in ear. Apply warm salt bag.

# Cigarette smoke blown in ear

# Garlic oil

# Sweet oil and cotton in ear

# Olive oil

# Warm sweet oil

# Sweet oil drops in ear, put some drops of camphor oil on cotton, put cotton in ear.

# Apply warm sweet oil into ear canal. Put cotton in ear.

# Blow dryer, sweet oil

# Use a blow dryer, apply heat to ear.

# Hot water bottle or a warm hair dryer.

# Put lemon juice in ear

# Blow smoke in the ear

# 2 drops of urine

...great...now I'm confused....

Children who live with smokers seem to be more susceptible to middle-ear infections than are those who live in smokefree homes. Cigarette smoke irritates the linings of the nasal passages and middle-ear cavity, which in turn interferes with the normal functioning of the eustachian tube. If you cannot quit, at least take your habit outside.

heh..
