Dear Ask Kitch,

My brother, in an attempt to leave his school-town of Fargo, took a traveling job. The first portion of this is in Vermont. After finding on-line directions, they all take him through Canada.

 With the heightened security measures of post-9/11 life, and the Department of Homeland Security needing something to justify their existence, was anything changed in regard to the use of passports to enter our border countries? Can we still travel our neighboring countries with just a drivers license?

 I haven't (voluntarily) left the country since I was in 6th grade (1986), so I would have no clue...

Thanks!

we were just up in our northern neighbor. at this point you don't need a passport to get into canada. the reverse, however, is not entirely true. you have until next year to get a passport for driving back into the country, but for air and sea travel you need one now.

TIPS FOR TRAVELERS TO CANADA....

THIS IS THE KICKER FOR MOST PEOPLE...IF YOU EVER HAD A DWI...HAVE FUN WITH THE REDTAPE.

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offense. Penalties are heavy, and any prior conviction (no matter how long ago or how minor the infraction) is cause for exclusion from Canada. A waiver of exclusion may be obtained from a Canadian consulate in the United States, but several weeks are required. There is a processing fee for the waiver.

Glad I have no plans to go :frown:

Sucks that they don't have a stupid and 21 exclusion...

I think he wants to know why he's not getting any e-mail messages, saying that there are new messages on the board, since he signed the option in the preferences to be notified when new messages are posted.

Make more sense?

When you hit the "subscribe" link on the pages you want to subscribe to, click the box that says "check messages".

Then anytime there is a new message, you will see a red dot by the "read new" link at the top and bottom of each page.

You just have to click "read new", and it will magically transport you to the new message. It don't matter what page you are on, if a new message is posted, it will work.

Does that help?

Butcher knife. You have to be careful, though you don't want to cut off any more than needed. I suggest just staying close to the knuckle.

ok is that the 1st knuckle or the second? What should I do for the blood loss? Would you suggest a tourniquet or a coterizing it??

Because Super Glue is so strong and bonds so fast, some people may find that they have accidentally glued two fingers together, or found that that small piece of balsa wood or plastic from a model they were building has completely bonded to their skin! Not to worry, for even though Super Glue is incredibly strong, it has one weakness: acetone.

Acetone is often found in household nail polish remover, and a small amount on the end of a Q-tip or cotton swab applied directly to the glue should dissolve the bond without damaging the skin. Be very cautious in gently peeling the skin apart as in removing a bandage from the skin; pulling the skin apart may rip the skin! Read the label to make sure that the remover actually contains acetone, as more and more manufacturers are turning away from the chemical because of the growing popularity of acrylic nails (which are loosened by acetone).

Be careful - straight acetone will discolor a number of fabrics and can mar the finish of laminated counter tops (mainly the darker colored ones). Straight Acetone defats the skin; wash with soap and water after use and apply hand lotion to replenish the skin and remove any dryness effects. Use acetone sparingly and cautiously with these tips in the following situations:

* Clothing/Fabrics

      Use acetone and an old toothbrush, reapplying the acetone a number of times and brushing to remove it layer-by-layer. Work on outside and then on inside. May not come off entirely.

    * Counters, tables, floors, etc.

      Use acetone to soften glue and then start working at the glue. Brush, scrape, shave, peel, sand or whatever mechanical means is available to work the glue off. Reapply acetone and continue to work at the glue.

    * Glass

      Standard Super Glue is not recommended to be used for glass bonding applications. If bonded, soak in water until parts come apart.

KITCH

Should Super Glue bond to any body part where acetone should not be applied, such as the lips or eyes, the following steps will help you get out of any sticky situation!

* Skin

      Immerse bonded areas in warm, soapy water. Peel or roll skin apart; a spatula or teaspoon handle or even a pencil will help. Remove cured adhesive with warm, soapy water (may take several applications). Fingernail polish remover with an acetone base has also been successful for removal of cured adhesive from skin.

    * Lips

      If lips are accidentally stuck together, apply a generous amount of warm water and encourage maximum wetting and pressure from saliva from inside the mouth. Peel or roll (do not pull) lips apart. It is almost impossible to swallow the adhesive as a liquid. The adhesive solidifies upon contact with saliva (moisture) and could adhere to the inside of the mouth. Saliva will lift the adhesive in 1-2 days, avoid swallowing the adhesive after detachment.

    * Eyelid

      In the event that eyelids are stuck together or bonded to the eyeball, wash thoroughly with warm water and apply a gauze patch. The eye will open without further action within 1-4 days. To our knowledge there has never been a documented case of adhesive in the eye causing permanent damage. Do not try to force eyes open.

    * Eyeball

      The adhesive will attach itself to the eye protein and will disassociate from it over time, usually within several hours. Periods of weeping and double vision may be experienced until clearance is achieved. Use of a warmed 3% sodium bicarbonate solution to wash eyes repeatedly may assist in aiding more rapid removal of the adhesive.

WE SUGGEST THAT ALL INCIDENTS OF EYE EXPOSURE TO CYANOACRYLATE ADHESIVE (SUPER GLUE) BE DISCUSSED WITH A PHYSICIAN.

acetone can cause cancer... which is why you don't find it in nail polish remover anymore... (or so I have heard...)

I would go for the first knuckle. As for blood loss, wrap a cloth around the finger, leaving quite a bit at the wound site. Apply direct pressure for 5 minutes, with the wound being elevated. If for some reason it continues to bleed, the area of a finger would require the use of a tourniquet.

 To tie a tourniquet properly, it need to be at least 2" away from the nearest joint. So this would put you approximately 2" above your wrist. Tie it only as tightly as you need until the bright red bleeding stops. You can have the tourniquet on for say an hour, in which case the bleeding should be stopped by then. when removing the tourniquet, ensure you keep the bandage on your finger. Leave it on over night, and then remove it under water so as not to remove any clotted blood.

If it starts to bleed again, or if this method does not appeal to you, I suggest shoving your finger into a lit propane torch for about 30 seconds or so (16 seconds for MAPP gas). The immense heat should cauterize the wound so you can safely go about your day :smile:

Or else, you can listen to Kitch and take your chances with the acetone. You decide which route is for you :wink:

I went with the fingernail polish remover but it didn't do a whole lot of good...it did seem to make the glue softer and not as abrasive and its now like a soft sand paper feeling verses a corse sand paper that it was. I've picked and peeled for most of the night its not as stiff as it was so I'm thinking it will either wear off naturally or tomorrow moring I'll get desparate and use the green scrubby :wink:

It isn't that those loves are gone, it's is that a lot of things are being misinterpreted as love these days.

 Kind of like this...

Don't marry her because you can live with her, marry her because you can't live without her.

-----------------------------------------------------

I have been trying for a long time to put this in other words for you... but I can't come to a conclusion that I can be happy with... Hope the little I shared helps... :frown:
