ohhhh I seee....YOU ARE RIGHT.....I'm bad.....

  • It would collect taxes from everyone living in this country, including aliens and illegal aliens.
  • It would tax the underground cash economy in the U.S. because people who currently evade taxes would be taxed equally when they bought goods and services.

Lets see. The poor have little money. If they have to pay a national sales tax on anything it will be a new cost to them.

If you start cherry picking what can be taxed and what can't, how could you ever hope to raise enough money?

you sure you don't want to include housing, education and transportation in that?

there is an area between ultra rich and extreme poverty that most people live in.

furniture is a luxury? transportation is a luxury? electricity is a luxury? home heating oil is a luxury? I am sure here are a few other luxuries that need a national sales tax.

    furniture is a luxury?

    YES it is....

I bought alot of my furniture used from garage sales, ads in the paper, etc. -- I'm not PROUD of it...but I wasn't able to afford new or like new quality.  (times have changed for me).

Under a national sales tax those purchases could be subject tax.

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon are the five states that currently do not impose general sales taxes at the state level. However, numerous boroughs and cities in Alaska have their own local sales taxes. Furthermore, the other four states impose sales-type taxes on specific transactions, such as lodging accommodations.

so let me get this straight.....if it doesn't work....then how come 45 of the states have a form of sales tax???

Under a national sales tax those purchases could be subject tax.

You are right...but I don't know of any states that currently hold individuals accountable for garage sale sales tax.

If the government gets in a bind --- because I don't think there's any way a national tax could raise enough money (ditto a flat tax) -- they'll tax your vegetable garden to try and get the equivalent money that you would have paid had you bought the produce retail.

You are right...but I don't know of any states that currently hold individuals accountable for garage sale sales tax. It may depend on how often one has a grage sale and how much their sales are.

If you do not think the IRS would immediately start identifying and TAXING the people who make any form of money in a Garage Sale, then you are
    truly
    naive.

OH...don't get me wrong.....UNDER THE CURRENT TAX SYSTEM....I wish they would catch the people that are not reporting this as income.  I know there is people out there that is making a full-time income from garage sales, flea markets, online auctions, ads, veg. and fruit stands, etc.--- It just as bad as drug dealers not paying taxes.

(as a kid I sold fishing worms for the people traveling north every weekend....I made on avg. $250 weekend.) (granted it was only about $4k for the summer but if an adult was doing that...it would go tax-free for income).

This is exactly why a National sales tax has BENIFITS....it will be a good catch all for the people that are currently avoiding paying taxes.

    PROUD: adjective:
feeling self-respect or pleasure in something by which you measure's your self-worth; or being a reason for pride .

Its my own measuring of my self-worth. Are you challanging my views of myself?? I'm not PROUD of what I had and my humble beginnings.........but I'm PROUD of my current situation (turning my lazy ass around and that I can now afford better things in life due to hard work and self-motivation).

I'll second that and include corporations and government agencies as well.  Especially when it comes to progression that instantly turns perfectly good, and most times expensive, products obsolete in a hurry.  It sucks having a company policy that states that nothing can leave the building, trash or otherwise. It all gets tossed.

Sorry - I didn't read any of the previous posts, I was just commenting on JT's post about people throwing a lot of shit away.  I didn't know there was a reason for saying it.  My bad.  But if we helped make a point then great.

I'll need to slog a little when I get home to see what conversation I was just in

Funny how that actually happens to me in face to face conversations as well.  I wish we were able to slog back on those too.  It would save tons of arguments.  I'm thinking on setting up a camcorder in our living room just to keep things straight.  ;-)

There'll always be a way to get around taxes to a point. No matter if it's a flat tax, sales tax etc. And although I can see the benefits of those I'd be happy if instead we started by not changing a thing............except. Have no more automatic witholdings. Have it so that everyone has to write a check. At the end of the year you pay in more or get your refund back. That way I'd be spared the urge to slap someone when they act all happy when they get a refund, like a refund is a gift. Of course many don't realize it was there money all along. Imagine my glee when I go back to Target and point out they overcharged me and they actually give me my money back! Whoopee, happy days are here again! If they did this one small change it would make a huge difference. And more than likely the next time they propose something like spending 200,000 on a state program to teach women how to fish, the collective will ask if they're out of their friggen minds. End of Rant. I'm Luv2Fly and I approve this message.

Under the current system...."refunds" is why it works....people don't realize the PAIN caused by "misspending or overspending"...

When taken out of paycheck people don't Feel the pain that is related to it.....And when they get "their" money back they think its the greatest thing in the world.

One of the major bennies of the Sales tax is that you know each day that it sucks!!!

the more I think about it the better it gets....the POOR don't have to worry about paying for income tax preparers, paying in at the end of the year etc....

(I look at a lot of Credit Bureaus Everyday ---believe me the POOR are often the ones that owe in back taxes....either property or otherwise.)

Heck I see people I work with putting in for 9 deductions because they can't make ends meet......because of poor budgeting they will be screwed come tax time.

Why are they not doing this right now????

If you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, baffle 'em with bullshit!

Look I'm just as dumb as the next guy at least I can admit it!!!! At least I can admit that the current tax system is so baffling that is why its just bullshit. Why do you need to have sooo many different rules, codes, deductions, etc....

Maybe the it would be just best if we did this!!!!

    Annoying Cell Phone Ring Tax
A 25% excise tax will be applied to any cell phone that is equipped to mangled versions of Beethoven or Brittney.

    The SUV Penalty
Those who own or drive any vehicle large enough to transport a circus or the governor of California must pay an additional 15% in federal tax. Drivers who actually own a circus animal or who live in the governor’s mansion in Sacramento can file Form H2 to apply for a rebate of the tax.

    The Creative Deduction Deduction

Did you claim your cat/dog as a dependent? File for depreciation on your flat screen tv? A special $1000 deduction goes to those who concoct the most creative ways to reduce their tax bills, legally or not. The value of the deduction is automatically doubled if your return actually causes an IRS auditor to laugh out loud.

    The Gender Equity Provision

Even though a recent Harvard study found that although women on average still earn only 78 cents to a man’s dollar, America’s working women typically shell out twice as much to look good at work. This amendment to the tax code would allow women to deduct the cost of pantyhose, footwear, unnecessary highlighting, frequent manicures, and cosmetic dental work.

    One more....

    The Vanity Tax

Add 25% to all cosmetic surgery procedures as a way of capturing the value added when wrinkles, excess flab and other blemishes are removed. Think of it as liposuction for your wallet. Those who can afford to look way more attractive than God or nature intended should pay extra for the privilege -- and for making the rest of us ashamed to walk around the locker room naked.

Thanks, Bill. At least it's a step in the right direction.

Medical costs are rising fast, and there are many reasons for it. There is way too much regulation and bureaucracy involved. Malpractice insurance costs have skyrocketed because of lax judges and uninformed juries.

National health care is not the answer. As P.J. O'Rourke says, if you think health care is expensive now, wait until it's free!

John Kerry's biographer today called on the presidential candidate to release his military records and warned a Navy investigation into his medals could prove to be the "death knell" of his campaign.

In the past, Kerry has said he could not release some documents because of contractual obligations to Douglas Brinkley, author of "Tour of Duty." Brinkley said he has no contractual claims to any of the papers.

"Clearly some of these military records should be made available to the press," he said on Steve Malzberg's WABC New York radio show today.

Brinkley also said that if the Navy investigation reveals deception in connection with Kerry's medals, it could be the "death knell" for Kerry's campaign. Professing uncertainty about what to make about the Swift Boat Vets' claims, Brinkley said: "Right now it's unclear. So we have to just wait to see what all this adds up to."
