Funny I'm exhibiting a liberal trait when I'm moderate, more on the conservative side.  Also funny how you tell me to stick to the medallion boards where the kids are, when your posts are the more childish.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Nobody actually admits to being a liberal anymore.

Fold, you point to post #573 as to what made you go off on Dan.  Yet it was post #571 where you went off on him.  That was what I was talking about.  You can post all you want about veterans issues.  Isn't it harsh to go off on someone who is questioning the validity and the pertinence of someone's post?  I agree with Dan in that you have been posting a lot of stuff with the mindset of taking down Bush and this administration.  Everything negative that can be found will be posted.  It doesn't matter what other President's decisions have done to affect the current Veterans' states of affairs.  It doesn't matter if the current President has given more for veterans than other Presidents.  What is best for the political party isn't always best for the country.  Is it that you want more Bush out of office, or Kerry more in office?  What will Kerry do for Veterans if he's President?

ThoseMedallingKids

Bill, I'm not villifying you for posting about Veterans' issues.  I know you're passionate about having served, and I respect you for what you've done for the country.  What bothers me, and others, is that you so easily dismiss the opinions of those who haven't served.  It come across on these boards as if the opinions of non-serving individuals is not important or worthy.  I'm not just talking about Torpedo either.  You mention your patriotism and service being questioned.  On one hand, if one or two individuals want to focus their attention on that, can that be generalized to the whole community here questioning it?  On the other hand, you could be bringing it on yourself by your questioning of other people's patriotism and service.  It's like Kerry versus Bush.  Kerry makes his service a centerpiece of his campaign.  So of course people on the other side are going to question the importance and validity of it.

You say that I'm defending that asshole.  Which asshole am I defending?  I was defending Dan, not Torpedo.  I don't see how I could be defending Torpedo when he sees me as trying to take him down with my posts.  Nobody has me by the balls.  I have friends here, but if I disagree with them, I'll say it.  We can still be friends and disagree on things.

How has the President allowed veterans to attack veterans?  Bush cannot change the fact that Kerry served in the military.  Kerry is the one who is highlighting his military service, can Bush say that Kerry cannot do that?  Bush doesn't have the power to force everyone to get along in the Veteran community.  No one person has that power.  We enjoy our freedom to speech and our freedom to think and believe what we want.  The veterans have split their vote on their own accord.  Some prefer that Kerry has a more extensive service record, while others are put off by the questions surrounding his record.  Some are for the war and what Bush's objectives are, while some are against it.  Just because a person is a part of one group doesn't mean they have to totally go along with you.

Yeah, some of this is entertainment.  There is a fair amount of information disseminated here, a fair amount of discussion going on.  If it's entertainment though, why post all the articles and such with facts in it?  Why care if someone has or hasn't served?  I doubt those in the abortion thread post just for the entertainment of seeing how high a number of posts they can get in there.  I have not lost respect for you because you have fun on here, or things like that.  I can respect you for discussing things, for being civil, for your service, etc.  Don't feel that I'm trying to disrespect you.

There are people who post that I don't really follow as much.  I've read enough of their posts that I know I likely won't gain much from reading what they have to say.  I still will give them the benefit of the doubt though.  There are plenty others though that I respect for what they have to say and contribute.  You may come here to be entertained.  I come here to learn.  I take things with a grain of salt.  I know there are biases.  But I know that I can increase my knowledge and perspective on things.  Yeah, I haven't served in the military.  I wouldn't know as much about veterans' issues though if it weren't for what is posted in here.  Or wait, maybe it isn't about serious stuff in here.

I think I'll go have dinner and then look for the medallion.

Yes, well said TMK.  I also have learned a lot during the years here and the PP (I miss the old PP where a lot of people were involved).  I have been challenged with some pretty tough questions and opinions which have made me investigate what I believe to be true.  Sometimes I have had to admit that I was wrong and have learned from that as well.  I think that is what keeps me coming back here when it is possible.  It can be quite the workout for the mind.

Yeah, no question about it.  Rick can take jabs about us all he wants.  We may not be able to find a little blue puck buried in snow, but we can find perhaps even greater treasure in real friendship.  Our group grows bigger and bigger with each year.  With each year we gain new and fond memories.  The medallion hunt has brought couples together.  I look forward to next year's hunt, for what and who it will bring.

...Bush reiterated his commitment to military personnel. "We will support them," he said. "We'll provide them fair pay and good treatment. We will continue to ensure they have the tools they need to defeat the enemies of today. We will develop the weapons and systems to meet the threats of tomorrow."

On the personnel side, the bill provides a 3.5 percent across-the-board pay raise for service members, eliminates out-of-pocket housing expenses and fully funds the Defense Health Program. The president said the raise brings the total pay raise over the last four years to nearly 21 percent. "This money is well earned, well deserved, and well spent," he said.

Bush called the elimination of out-of-pocket expenses "a real boost" for military families. "The excellence and professionalism of an all-volunteer force has never been higher," he said. "America must do all we can to encourage these special Americans to stay in uniform, and that starts with taking care of their families." ...

I've read about it. Dennis Hastert is pushing for it, and I've been for major tax reform since about forever. Steve Forbes pushed a flat tax. This sales tax is an alternative, and it would abolish the IRS. Poor folks would get a portion of their sales tax payments rebated. I'm willing to listen to just about anything that would replace the current system.

BTW: I'm against a national sales tax. It allows the rich to accumulate wealth with very little taxation, while those with little money would pay a huge amount of their income towards taxes.

I like the idea of a flat tax. That's equality!

Plus, it cuts the need for such a huge IRS.

It is the SAME THING MAN.

The hell it is!

A flat tax is where everyone pays the same percentage income tax, say 10%. No tax breaks, no deductions, no loopholes for the rich or the poor.

Call it a national tythe, if you want...it is the same.

I don't know what the hell you're talking about when you mention tything. I'm really confused.

Explain how a flat tax is the same as a national sales tax?

Mon, 08/23/2004 - 6:48 AM Permalink

A flat tax is like tithing in that everyone pays the same percentage of income. However, it isn't voluntary.

The problem with a flat tax is that Congress won't be able to resist fiddling with it, and interest groups will be in a perpetual cat fight about exemptions and exceptions and all kinds of other ways they will want to tinker with it.

A sales tax will encourage saving rather than consumption. It also gets paid immediately, so that people will be aware all the timeof how high their taxes are. It would be like getting rid of withholding taxes, so that people would feel the pinch and be much more likely to hold Congress to account.

A national sales tax would certainly be a travesty. It certainly would put the burden on the poor.  There is nothing wrong with a progressive income tax as long as it is reasonable.
