I hid the treasure in a diaper at the corner of Smith and Cherokee. Inside the diaper was a mix of chocolates melted together to make it look like the diaper had actually been used. So I hide it about 10:00 Sunday morning and check on it both Monday and Wednsday night. No problems, everything is intact. I get a phone call Friday about them doing something with the leaves, and I decide to head up there to see whats going on. The diaper that held the treasure could be easily seen just walking by, so I parked across Smith and walked by... no diaper. I was torn between taking care of it late in the night or taking care of it right away, and I couldn't let people look for a treasure that wasn't even there to begin with, so when I asked everyone to give me some time to check on it I actually knew it wasn't there. After everyone left, I went over and looked, and part of the diaper was there buried in some leaves, but no treasure. An animal had apperently decided to cure his craving for chocolate. So anyways, I go to the SA on Smith and buy some duct tape and make a little makeshift treasure and put it on the diaper. Apparently sometime Saturday morning someone threw it of the cliff (I don't know who). Anyways, I did what I thought was best, and I don't feel at all good about what happened. Let me know what I can do to make it up to you guys. A night of drinks, perhaps? Anyways, this has actually been quite an ordeal for me too. (no pun intended) I enjoy treasure hunting and I have definately learned alot from this. Anyways, I am truly sorry.

OK Jake I understand your sorry-Apology Accepted!

Yes I would love to see your clue explanations!

And then we all will give you a explanation of this morning! ; > )

P S-- Let this be a lesoon to all future treasure hunt clue writers--

In Minnesota we have animals that eat ANY kind of food left outside and sometimes even things that at one time had food or anything that smells in them.(I am not being a smart ass)

And again Jake I am sorry too that this happen to you and us!

And maybe sorry for what happen this morning "but you'll find it amusing when its all over"

Even though it wasn't practical to use chocolate, and a diaper has already been used to hide a medallion, I like the idea. If I saw brown in a diaper I wouldn't continue to mess with it.

diaper has already been used to hide a medallion

This is also the explanation I would like Jake. Two months to think about your hunt and that is what you came up with to hide it in.I know your more creative then that.Maybe if you had used something a treasure had really already been burried in like the pp's broken record you have or any other pp treasure's you have or AW's box and clump of dirt you have or my gleenwood cup

basically, what marley said, jake. although personally, i just can't believe the diaper was what it was originally in. i wanna believe the diaper just happened to be convenient last nite for you. i so want to believe that's the truth.

FYI, the Earl Street bridge is now closed where it crosses 7th. But on the plus side, the Arcade bridge is back open. Thus ends the east side report.

Good Evening from up north!

Jake - I know you and your passion about these hunts enough to know you're telling the truth. I actually understand why you used the diaper too. A diaper was used at Hidden Falls. I know from a conversation with you once that you had thought that an interesting concept. In some ways, that diaper, though very visible without snow, would be a good hiding place because of people's queasiness about such things.

I think the lesson learned here is that it's not easy being the hider/clue writer. Food products at this time of year when they're not frozen is bait for critters - no matter what the container. That's a lesson learned that won't be repeated, I'm sure.

I would love to see the clue explanations.

Jake - Thanks for the hunt. I think you're a good clue writer - and will be an even better hider in the future. :-)

Six ninjas in gear? Is that all? Damn, with the dropping of the 6th, I figured there'd be a lot more Rydas representin the hatchet... Speakin of the 6th... y'all go out and get the shit yet? Speakin for me and J, I sure the fuck hope so... It reveals "the unveiling" of everything that the Insane Clown Posse has ever stood for... As 'The real Violent J' said at the Gathering of the Juggalos 2002: "It seperates the true juggalos from the rest of the world." Even if you ninjaz have never listened to an ICP track in yo life, I encourage you to pick this C.D. up, because after more than a decade of spittin their wicked shit, this C.D. proved a lot of people wrong... Most thought that they threw their shit together with no consideration into their lyrics. I think that for a couple guys that put "no consideration" into their lyrics, they did a pretty damn good job of telling a story 'of biblical proportions' that lasted for over ten years, and brought thousands of people ("Juggalos") together as a family. They brought people together under one cause, which is manifested as the "Dark Carnival." They bring people from every "walk of life" together as one. They show that no matter what life style you come from, no matter what relgion you believe in, y'all have a common cause, and those that don't believe, will be forever trapped in 'Hell's Pit.'

Yeah... so check it... I was over there at Shagg's place, when he posted that message... lemme tell ya'll straight up. He was feelin this shit.... he sat there for 2 hours trying to think of what he was gonna tell ya'll.... shit. Im sittin here tryin to hold back the tears, as I think about whats gone down, myself. Ya'll its truly the shit... Words cannot describe whats happenning in the juggalo world right now, at this very moment. I mean... COME ON! the SIXTH and final jokers card... The Wraith: Shangri La, has dropped....and ninjas... its only part one... yes.. I said part one... it was "For the Juggalos". SO whats next? whats gonna happen next... well.... like my home boy said... "Hells Pit" is comin next.... Ya'll.... I dont gotta tell most of you, how silly this shit might sound to alotta people.... but for real... its on a whole other level with Juggalos.... People that listen to the 6 jokers cards series.... shit... theres a message in there.... its all summed up in The Wraith: Shangri La. If just what Shaggs, and myself have told you here is at all... even in the smallest way, moving you to want to learn more... I'm tellin you right here and now.... get out and buy that shit... start off with "Carnival Of Carnage" then move on to "The Ring Master" then onto "The Riddle Box", then onto "The Great Milenko", then "The Amazing Jeckyl Brothers" and lastly, "The Wraith: Shangri La"... dont just sit there and listen to them either... hell nah... ACTUALLY LISTEN TO THEM. If you were meant to understand the message... you will... and as I already said.. ITS THE SHIT! The real life Violent J... a.k.a. Joe Bruce (thats his real name, ya'll) stated how the 6th jokers card, "The Wraith: Shangri La" should be listened to.... Before you sit down and listen to it... take a dump..get your bathroom deeds out of the way...then grab whatever food, or drinks, or whateverthefuck your gonna need for the next 64:10 and hide yourself someplace where no one will find you... and make sure you've got headphones for that CD player too... the headphones help you hear the shit WAY better, ya'll.... sit there and listen to the magic of ten years unfold before you.... witness the entrance, and welcoming to Shangri La.... dont skip any tracks... no backing up or repeating.... not until its all over and you've had time to take in all that you just experienced.... after you've done that... DO IT AGAIN... I can fuckin guarantee that you'll feel better about yourself after you hear this.... and what the message is. All you need to have is the power to believe.... thats all. Just believe, ninjas. Listen, and Believe.
Peace.

THANKS for the update! :)

We attended the Timberwolves game at Target Center last night- when we left we were absolutely amazed at the change on Hennepin! WOW! Bright lights! We couldn't believe how fast Block E had changed in 1 year. You need anything to do? Bored? drive Hennepin on a Fri-Sat night. Actually looking up that street would make for a sweet photograph at night. We even saw an Insane Clown Posse Poster on one of the building advertising a new movie. We crossed over into Riverplace and that area was hoppin' too (hoppin':), I'm old). And to show my age? I was in bed watching tv and falling asleep by 11.

So the part about an animal messing with the diaper happened, but the part about it getting thrown over the cliff didn't?

I don't think I like the two clues a day format. Seems like the whole thing is over before you really get much of a chance to think about the clues, especially if you're having a busy week.

I was hoping to see the clue explanations by now.

Jake!?!?!? When?!?!?

Sun, 11/10/2002 - 5:04 PM Permalink
jakeinge

1. The first one of the year
    Was found by the King
Now go to a park in St. Paul
    And find the thing.

An unusually helpful first clue, the first line tells you that the neon 1st bank sign is visible from the treasure site. The second line refers to the fact that King is the name of a street near the treasure, and the third line clues you in that its in a park in Saint Paul.

2. Now “Old Hickory”, if you studied history
Was General Andrew Jackson’s informal title
Another Jackson may help solve this mystery
But keeping sight of the General’s moniker is vital.

General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was the Jackson who would help you solve this mystery as well as being the general whose moniker you needed to keep in sight. Which is to say that a stonewall was very near the treasure’s hiding spot.

3. There has been treasure
    In this park before
But there are only three ways
    For one to keep score.

The first half of this clue states that there has been treasure hidden in the park before. The second half of this clue refers to the three sports that are played at the park, tennis, basketball, and baseball. The word “one” makes reference to the first bank sign visible from the treasure site.

4. Thirty to forty, forty to thirty
    This clue may seem confusing
    Remember that in the end
We’ll think this hunt was rather amusing.

The first line about thirty and forty are referring to speed limits, and depending on which direction you are traveling on Smith Ave., you will either go to one or the other. The last line about the hunt being amusing was all you were going to get in regards to what the treasure was hidden in!!!

5. Roll the dice
    Its one in six
    Box it out
    And you’ll have your sticks.

The deck is stacked
    You just can’t win
    This big dark cloud
    It has you pinned.

“Boxcars” are sixes on dice, and there are train tracks below the treasure site. The words “stacked” and “cloud” make reference to the NSP smokestack near the treasure site.

6. A man named Claven
    His useless facts
    Figure them out
    And he’ll watch your back.

“Cliff” Claven is a character from the hit tv show Cheers. The treasure is located very near a cliff.

7. One to the right
    And none to the left
    Just look for an arrow
   Near the treasure site.

Describes the right turn arrow on the ground at the corner of Smith and Cherokee.

8. To be European
   Would be interesting fun
   Measure it up
   And the game is won.

Metric auto works is across the street from the treasure site.

9. Let’s just stop
    And have a Coke here
    The medallionators will find
    The real one next year.

The words here and coke put together is an anagram for Cherokee. The treasure was hidden at Cherokee park. The second half lets hunters know who will find the winter carnival treasure in 2003.

10. Look not far
      From the biggest Bush
And its not hair we’re talking
      In this political push.

The biggest Bush would be George Bush. George Street is located near the treasure.

11. His first name was real
      His last name was fake
     He led the A-Team
     For a worthy sake.

A clever clue if I don’t say so myself. The leader of the A-TEAM was played by actor GEORGE Peppard. The character that Peppard portrayed was John SMITH. The treasure was hidden between George Street and Smith Avenue.

12. It's in a diaper, in the brush
      At Smith and Cherokee
      Find it now
And you will jump with glee.
Tells the exact location of the treasure.

and now for ares' score figuring out the clues:

i said cherokee for king street in me2's basement as she was posting the first clue. 1/2 point since i didn't think about it referring to the first bank 1.

the first thing that came to mind was another stone wall for clue the second. i did have a hard time believing that jake would use a virtually identical explanation for the clue though. 1 point.

clue the third narrowed the list down, obviously, and my first thought was check which of those 3 parks had ball fields, etc, adding up to 3. 1 point.

i can't take credit for anything in clue the fourth, as i didn't think about the speed limit changes for the high bridge until me2 pointed them out to me. 0 points.

i couldn't make heads or tails of the first half of clue the fifth. i figured the big dark cloud had something to do with the power plant, probably the emissions from the smokestack (hasn't that plant been converted to use natural gas?) or possibly even the pile of coal there once we got to cherokee. 1/2 point.

i figured cliff claven as soon as i read the sixth clue. though i figured if he was watching my back, i'd be at the bottom of it, not the top. 1 point.

clue the seventh was a gimme, though which arrow he was talking about remained to be seen. 1 point (wants to add an extra point for the rhyming error in the clue).

i'll claim nothing for the 8th or 9th clues, as someone else posted the anagram for cherokee. though it should be pointed out that there is a coke machine visible at night from the high bridge overlook sitting down on harriet island.
10 and 11 were more or less gimmes after a quick search on the net for 11. 2 points.

clue 12 never happened as the hunt was actually over before it was published.

total ares score for this hunt: 6 points out of a possible 11. and me2 is my witness that i was the first person to say it was in cherokee and it only took me one clue to say that.

marley, you're full of it. :) if any of y'all wanna sweeten the pp hunt pot just a little bit, check out the "gambling" threads in the look and feel test folder.

Decided to go caching instead of Jake's mock hunt. Found it easily and the views of the river valley were awesome. I took my 7 year old son with and he comments about the views as we were heading to the cache. A doe came to visit while we were logging our find. She circled around and watched the whole time before heading down to the river. We took the stunt wrench and a copper ring and left a mini pocket knife and a magnetic digital locker clock.

Thanks for the great cache. The walk alone was worth the hunt.

You are all wrong, it is my year to find the medallion, and maybe just maybe I will be nice in 2004 and sit out, so that you all will have a chance. Although you all may have a slight upper hand in noodling, I plan on turning over a lot of damn snow this year, and in the end you do actually have to do that in order to find it.

I am still working on my plans to invent a "hair blower" large enough to melt a large amount of snow. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, let me know.

Mon, 11/11/2002 - 1:44 PM Permalink
ares

too late. i've already patented the idea. and actually i'm thinking a gas powered leaf-blower could be quite helpful if the temperature is right around freezing.

Mon, 11/11/2002 - 1:45 PM Permalink
tim_the_hunter

Leaf blower? How would you then incorporate some sort of heating mechanism?

Mon, 11/11/2002 - 1:47 PM Permalink
ares

that's why it has to be right up around freezing. if you get the air to blow across it, the snow will sublimate. much the same principle as the snow melting at 0 degrees with the wind blowing at 30mph. if you really need a heating mechanism, i'm sure that the exhaust from the engine could work for that.

either that will happen or there will be an impressive snow show in the air.

Seems like the whole thing is over before you really get much of a chance to think about the clues

First off-AW, I hope you too are feeling better. still coughing here but no more Nyquil.

Jake gave us all alot of 'crap' for not finding it sooner and couldn't believe we wern't figuring it all out and that he and donny would had found it already (I think that was around clue 7). Half the times Jake called me last week, he would say 'where are you?'-not even a hello. My usual response was, 'I am picking up kids from school'. I personally think we all did an excellent job since their were 2 clues a day and we at least try to have a 'life' while hunting. Some of us have families and jobs. I still think 'Stonewall' should have been the 'Jackson' Missisippi River but I think we had the rest figured out -even the 1st clue with the 1st bank sign! ;p. It was the diaper thing that I just disregarded-I didn't mess with the trash on the ground-we almost came through with garbage bags and picked up cause it was such a mess-

Mon, 11/11/2002 - 1:57 PM Permalink
ares

if we had come through with trash bags to pick the place up i'm sure we'd have found it earlier. of course had marley found it earlier and dropped it in a trash bag, we never would have found it in the first place.

and in case you're wondering, jake, don't bother trying to find the diaper. it ended up in the trash can across the street by the overlook.
