1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

No user inform…

A few Questions: How do we know the medallion hasn't been found yet? Maybe someone found it and is just having fun watching us all rack our brains trying to

figure the clues out.

Might it be possible that the person who wrote the clues is in this chat room and trying to misguide us?

When do they hide the medallion? If it is at Conway, wouldn't a nearby resident have seen something suspicious when they were hiding it? Maybe the" 9, 5 and

somewhere a 4" is a combination to something.

Sorry Chris, I've met some of the people from the Cooler (not you), what sense would it make for PP to try to throw people off? Unless they are just evil. BUt even

so, the clues lead to Conway. If you go there and check it out it works. If you have other ideas, share

Tango--I did drive by merriam on saturday.

Didn't look extensively at the park because by then I was totally disallusioned by the whole thing, again!

Anyways, share your thoughts! jennyjenny

I live acrosss the street from conway and believe it or not it is a small park but there is traffic that goes in and out of it all the time...this neighborhood is not really the

suspicious type...kinda ghetto...lol

First, about Como's 9th hole...it isn't Par Five!!! And about the "transluscent peak," why do people think it's a dome? Why not a lamp post?

Just a couple of thoughts...

I think you felt like that yesterday...monica not because you were in the wrong park but only because we have not gotten a clue to start guiding us what or near

where to look for...you get there and you just don't know where to look...

Kristine - thats the best I've heard for the "trees in a line". I don't think they are just reffering to a row of trees at a park.

The tree street name theory - NO, it's a good thought, but how does this lead you to a name? IF you read over the clues from the past few years and then compare

the explanations to the WOOD ROW Wilson theory, it just fits right in.

Was at Conway yesterday, and it "felt" right to me. But yes, not sure where in the park yet to look. . .

MedStal: I'd love to share more, but I like that there's no one else where I'm digging right now...do you ever finally know when you find the spot and you just have to

keep digging until it's yours? That happens to me every year, I'm in the right area, and someone else gets it. Not this year.

I still am standing by Swede Hollow - the park hasn't been dug up to much - few people have been there - and well the clues look good - sure you can make the

clues fit that park - but well anyone can "make" clues fit any park.....so everyone thinks there park is right - the big thing I really - really like about swede - is you can

see the big water tower - you're thinking - yea so I can see one too.... but well this water tower has a red 3M logo on the side of it - this is not by 3M campus off of

Mcnight - it's about 4 miles west of 3M campus....

Mon, 02/01/1999 - 11:54 AM Permalink
Klinger Man

The water tower they are referring to also has cellular phone antennas on it. This could lead you to many things..... Trees in a line (telephone poles)...where do you

get the best reception and see the 3M sign and peak... a phone at the park lined up with something... Any other ideas??

somebody, anybody! In clue no. 6 what is a tome? In todays clue what is the big red object in the sky? We have looked at merrian and highland and now I'm

hearing things about the high bridge and 3m! What park should I be looking in? MT

What does anyone think of the idea that the 9, 5, & 4 point to what the object is hiden in "adorn the front door?" Usually the actual item that the medallion is found in

is hinted at in one of the first 3 or 4 clues.

Anybody ruled out Mounds Park yet? Keep out aan eye for water on high could be looking at the river from the bluffs, transluscent top...capitol, red sign...1st bank

sign, any thoughts?

I am sure it is conway........all the clues fit......and the 3m sign on top of a building glows that you willl see from the park the illuminated peaks the water tower

The first line of today's clue says "Keep out an eye for water on high", could this mean keep an 'i' out of the phrase water on high(i.e. an anagram). If so I came up

with 'he who grant' or 'threw hogan'.

When I tried it on 'for water on high' I came up with 'forge hawthorn' or 'go fer hawthorn'. Any thoughts?

Conway although not where I would have thought earlier is a very good idea! Water on high-- water tower yearnig for something worth learning and Many a "tome"

could refer to the library right next to the park almost sharring land with, Glowing translucent peak-- sunray shopping center has these red light-- 3M building. there

is a sliding hill there. its on wilson and ruth by mcknight rd. what do you all think? ANything else I should address?

Don't neccessarily think it's in a baseball. The clue said "ROUND", which implies to me two dimensions (circular). A three dimensional "ROUND" object would be a

globular or spherical. What could a "ROUND" white object be if it is not a baseball? Anyone have an idea???

Hello everyone! Can anyone think of a religious item that is round and white, besides a host? Could it be hidden in something religious that you have to break open?

Hence "iconoclast"?

Chris P.--Historically, the PP doesn't say things just to throw of readers. The clue might be obscure, but it is relevant to the park the medallion is located in.

Also, let's look at the most discussed locales:

BattleCreek Conway Merriam Como Phalen Mounds Irvine Park capitol mall Swede Hallow

What clues fit for each park? I haven't been to all the parks yet, so I don't know all that fits. I'm not lazy, just don't have the days off from work. jennyjenny

One definition of tome is a volume forming a part of a larger work. Each issue of Poor Richards Almanack would be a tome.

I'm just crabby about this now because I was at Conway after clue #3, but then #4 threw me off so I went elsewhere.

Have any of you been out to Hillcrest? There is a library there, and also a hill with a water tower. It is hard to tell which clues to tear apart, and which ones are just

used to rhyme with the others.

Ben Franklin created the fictional Richard Saunders. It was Richard who stated the proverbs such as:

God helps them that help themselves.

Richard's name appears in each tome of "Poor Richard's Almanack". Any clue where Saunders Ave. is located?
