1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Allison Wonderland

I also wouldn't put too much faith in tonight's clue. They'll probably just give us some obscure sounding clue that really only refers to what the medallion is hidden in and not to where it might be.

Doing a map search on the Internet, I found Fairway, MD by keying that in as the city/state name. It is just north of Silver Springs. Who knows but what it is a small town??? Unless someone has an unabridged atlas, I'm not sure we can rule out the existence of Fairway, MD or Green, ID.

RIDDLE ME THIS:

Does *ANYONE* actually think that when you post something out of the back of your rear end that the person you're actually talking to is going to SEE and RECOGNIZE a post with only "yes," or "good point," or "hi."

I'm hoping that the header font got some peoples' attention.

STOP POSTING WORTHLESS INFORMATION

BEFORE you run to your computer and post your ground breaking ideas, READ the other posts to see if your idea has already been brought up. In the several hundred posts I just read, there were only a small percentage of unique ideas... and a very large percentage (90+) of very excited people breaking the same good news over and over again.

What this causes, for all of you who really want your ideas to get through, is frustration and confusion for all people (like me) who actually want to sort through the information posted to dump into their think tanks to come up with ideas. READ THE POSTS. If there's anything that hasn't already been said, go ahead and share. If there's a similar idea with minor changes, feel free to append your ideas to the ones already present. But, *PLEASE* knock off the reiterations of exact ideas like, "I know it's in Phalen," or "I think you all are reading too far into the clues," as it doesn't contribute to the discussion at all. People reading 50 posts of worthless information and 3 posts of useful bits and pieces are bound to overlook stuff that could actually mean something. Stop spoiling the broth. And, speaking of that latter example...

I really think that people ought to kick back and drive around a little before you dig up someone's front yard. And, most of all, THINK a little more. The clues haven't really ever been deceiving. Just subtle. Everyone's jumping the gun trying to figure out the exact location with the first two clues. (Of how many? See my point.) So take the black and white and form a plan. Don't go so far as to look at the paper and think, "Hmm, that's printed on a derivitave of a roman font. Let's find some roman houses. I'll have to rent a transit and laser analysis equipment. What's the average architectural style of the neighborhood around THIS park? But, they didn't say that it couldn't be a parking lot. They have the word 'park' in it... Hmm.." The clues to come will shape a spot in peoples' minds better than three stanzas of general information. And aye, brainstorming is definately a powerful tool, but this place really isn't the place to dictate your thought process line by line. Form some ideas, I beg of you, before you post something that people are going to look at and laugh out loud, "Hah, STUPID." Anyway, enough of that. Please take the time to read this post again if you don't understand what I'm talking about. Ask someone to read it for you. Chances are, you're a likely candidate of the type of person I'm griping about.

Well, as soon as the next clue's released, I think I'm going to drive some parks. Until then, time to stock. :)

Also, anyone with access to IRC, (if you don't know what I'm talking about, see This page to check it out.) feel free to join me on EFNET #wintercarnival. I'll reside there for a couple days and see if it's worth my effort to keep the channel active. That's a great place to sound your mind in one word increments.

Allison Wonderland, that's okay. Like I said, I needed a new one anyway. Now I can keep on in each vehicle. I go camping a lot in the summer and you never know when you might need one. But, I did like to way you were thinking.

Matt, Easy Does It!!! Woa, sorry not everyone conforms to the specifics that you have requested.

There is a hill (sliding) and running path on East Shore Drive and Larpenteur at Phalen. I would think that ittiz steep enough for a runner, or a slider to catch a thrill going down. Also outdoor attractions a plenty. Snowmobiling, cross country skiing, hockey, etc. We still think it might be Phalen. Waiting anxiously for clue #3.

Sorry Step, trying to slog two boards at the same time.

Yes there were diggers there. We've been fiddle farting around at many of the parks today. Highland, Como, etc. No lots were plowed like they were at Phalen.

Hey, I'm a loser!

Anyway...

I apologize for having such high expectations for people who can use a computer. I'd figure that people who perhaps need an instillation of common sense might make this place a little better a place to converse in. Or, perhaps I'm wrong? People like reading the leaks of an ignorant person's mind? I don't care, I just figure that I might spark a revelation with people before they freak out all over a discussion with nothing real valuable to say. People who think I'm upset need to chill out no less than I do, too. :) I'm not mad. Just that this isn't a chatroom. I don't want to try to see it work that way.

JTFT: I see. Maybe another sock idea. The "No time for cold feet" has also been tossed around about representing hockey and skiing.

hmmm...interesting. And there IS a sledding hill?

TD: Cuz maybe its too small to be included in some atlases, like an unincorporated township or something. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Jim-the-Freigh…

Maybe a hockey sock EH?

Como has the golf course of course, the snow board/ski bunny hill, and the hockey rinks (no time for cold feet); other than 2 years ago when was the last time the puck was at como?

Eagle Eye & Allison Wonderland, then those are good ideas to keep in mind. After all, they definitely make Phalen more of a spot than Highland. But then, Highland had the Ford Theatre idea being scene and don't get caught with the police station close by. We're all pretty much tossing around the same ideas until maybe tonight's 3rd clue.

Matt, not everybody *thinks* the way you do. That's okay. I *do* understand what you're trying to say. And I too notice the same repetative posts, and it is boaring. Just boost yourself ahead. But please, please have a little more patience!!! I do with you. So, buddy, go easy!! We'll all get along much better!!

Okay, so what I gather from tonight's noodling is the following are the main parks that are possibilities: Highland, Phalen, Battle Creek, and Como. Are these correct?

In any case, there's no event as foot-warming as the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt, and no web site so well equipped to cover the hunt as this one.

This kind of stuck out to me...this is a section from the page where the clues are, and how they used "foot warming" made me wonder....

Maybe a warming shack?
