part of a letter I recieved yesterday from the Minnesota Dept of Health:
"The evidence indicates that 'NEGLECT DID OCCUR' in regard to the allegation that client was overmedicated, lost weight and developed a pressure sore before being admitted to a hospital on 12/31/04 for treatment of severe dehydration. Physicians orders were not followed, nor were any dosage reqirements documented. The client had drastic weight loss between Jan 04, and Aug 04, but his weight was not monitored after aug. The client had increased weakness and 4 falls in Dec., but the family was not notified, nor was the physician notified. From 12/29, to 12/31, the client had minimal fluid/food intake. An employee saw the client the morning of 12/31, however she did not note his oral intake, signs of fatal dehydration, or assess his pressure sores, which were bleeding, and infected.
When the client was admitted to the hospital on 12/31/05, the facility didn't even call to say he was coming in. The facility waited too long before sending him to the hospital. He was severely dehydrated, and sodium levels were critical.
Client was not going to get better.
Admitting physician stated that the facility could have taken better care of him, and thought it was due to a breakdown in the system on the part of the facility.

Let the games begin. Fuck.

Thanks you guys. The irony is, that how awful the entire letter is, one of my thoughts was that it was good news. If the Dept. of Health's findings were so severe- my atty will surely be able to have fortune getting them to pay my mom for all she went/is going thru.
The whole letter reveals terrible things that we never knew about. Harumph.
They also looked into the well- being of the other 4 patients in this home, and 2 others were found to be neglected, and in dangerous situations.
Harumph.
This investigation also revealed that the full-time staff had no medical background, and that an LPN would visit 1-3 times per week, as time allowed.
Harumph.
What were we paying $3000.00/ month for?
The corporation who runs this place has HUNDREDS of small nursing homes.
No staff nurses.....$3000.00/month... Do the math.
Harumph.
Prayer has helped me ALOT today.

OMG KT I'm so sorry :( *hugz* at least now you're atty will have some good stuff to throw at em in court... take em for everything they've got and shut the hell holes down!

KT

I don't want them shut down.... I want reform & recourse.
I want at LEAST health aides to be staffed there. I want them to communicate between shifts. I want formal charts for the residents.
Families with members who have alsheimers/dementia NEED these facilities. They need to know their loved one's are being cared for as they cannot do it any longer.
It can be repaired- and I will use the death of my father as a basis for my platform.
Families NEED care homes. Ones that truly care.

Do their families know what is/was going on? They should be notified so they may take their own action or possibly be part of a class action.

KT, was this a group nursing (in a private) home??? If so, where was it?

Fri, 04/29/2005 - 7:17 AM Permalink
KT

A group. Owned bt a corp. Up on the "range", but they have many facilities around the tri-state area, I believe.

I assume the Mn Dept. of Health notified the families of the other people, but since they weren't killed, I doubt they have a case.
The facilities have been ordered to hire more nurses9 umm...REAL nurses) Have one staffed at all times. They also are under close scrutiny, and will be subject to random inspections for compliance. I think there's a longer list, but I don't have all that info.
The whole letter was heartbreaking- essentially, my dad would still be around, and probably even healthy ('cept for his memory) Had they taken better care of him.
I get stronger about this every day- I wouldn't call it immune, but it's not kiling me.
I think that ceremonial fire at Crosby with all of you really served a purpose.
Once again, I am honored to have all of you to vent to, and support me.

KT - In all this, know your Dad is in a better peaceful place.

Hope they get that home straightened out. There's such a need for facilities that will care for patients with Alzheimer's when the family can't do it any longer.

TV- I can only hope my dad is in such a place as you described. He was not a very Christian fellow. However- I truly believe that when your life is taken from you, you go to a place where you can make a peace with your maker. ...no matter your diety beliefs....

It matters a great deal that you responded to my venting.

...But tonight- I'm cranking the tunes, and washing the computer room walls with TSP--- only it is phosphate free....So I think they should re-name it TS.

Well heck-fire! By Sunday this room will be repainted, and a new desk installed, built and created by my dad via me.
I gotta unplug this 'puter now...
    Love ya!
