Base: the lower part of a wall, pier, or column considered as a separate architectural feature (2): the lower part of a complete architectural design b: the bottom of something considered as its support : foundation
"Base of a tree" could mean the foundation (base) of a family or ancestry building/house (tree).
Base also means: the starting point or line for an action or undertaking b: a baseline in surveying
So to get back to what Allison was saying that the clue goes backward, find that big tree as the starting point, instead of focusing on the tree itself. Go from that tree to the weeds by the spring, rather than what everyone is doing now, which is find that tree and dig its base.
But which tree, I think that tree is somewhere in the clues.
We've spoken before, I'm a friend of Jana Armstead's from the Cooler Crew. Since your alleged "retirement" brought out a spotting session at Obb's this hunting season, I thought you might be interested in this: Since the cluewriter clearly is taunting us from time to time, we have improved our technology and teamwork: Instead of having multiple people down at the paper to call out clues, we have nightly conference calls for Cooler crew members, so we all get the clue first, and at the same time. (Generally after about clue 9 we do this.)
We'd be honored if you'd like to listen in next year.

Yeah, I think we better have a call since I invited Box to listen...
"Collect a fee" is still what's bugging me. It doesn't sound like a phrase you would use to describe finding the treasure, especially compared to the last two lines of the clue. But then what else could it be?
Unlawful exaction of money or property through intimidation or undue exercise of authority. It may include threats of physical harm, criminal prosecution, or public exposure. Some forms of threat, especially those made in writing, are occasionally singled out for separate statutory treatment as blackmail.
Eureka (Greek "I have found it") is an exclamation used as an interjection to celebrate a discovery.
HÄ“urÄ“ka is the 1st person singular perfect indicative active of the Greek verb heuriskein,[6] (Greek εὑÏίσκειν) meaning "to find"; it means "I have found it", or more accurately, "I am in a state of having found it". The English version of the word is pronounced /jʊˈriËkÉ™/; in ancient Greek ηὕÏηκα (later εὕÏηκα) would have been pronounced [ˈhεʷrεËka] in both former and later forms, while the modern Greek pronunciation is [ˈevrika]. The initial /h/ is dropped in many European languages; Finnish is one of those which preserves it (e.g. in Heureka).
I was talking to New Daddy in the park yesterday and he made a comment about how he went out there on the Saturday the first clue came out and that he saw someone out there digging already. In fact, he was suprised at how dug up the park was after the first day. So continuing the chunk theory, what if the cluewriter(s) went to Swede Hollow and dug it up themselves a bit, creating a bunch of large clumps in the process, and then hid the treasure in one of those "chunks"?
Another out there thought, what if "collect a fee" refers to a spot where people tend to do their drug deals?
Allison, too funny! You're starting to think like me in days past! "Collect a fee" simply means to collect the Medallion. They're not going to do a Clue about drug deals! LOL!!!
If I go down there tonight - I think I'm just going to take pictures. I've dug about 4x more this year than I have in previous -- I'm dog-tired (no pun intended) -- one conclusion...
I'm outta shape.
Sheesh. Talk about Karma. My iTunes shuffle just started playing a Gloria Estefan song "Get On Your Feet"
Last clue. Race goes to the swiftest - or the freakin' lucky - I don't think it matters tonight. Maybe have a planned layout of people scattered instead of huddled so someone is 'near' every part of the park.
I just don't think it's the best idea to put that up there since any ol'Tom, Dick or Harry can read it and call in. Prolly many we don't want to get the Clue before we do.
Maybe a Phone Call Thread just for the phone call or something.
I don't know but I just thought o'that when I saw it and saw so many hidden members on line...
the 1st in line guys!!! said they are wanting to be part of confernce call ..willing to take 1st shift...somebody needs to stop in and talk to them about other details
lol I really want to be down there taking pictures too.. just to be a part of the whole thing.. but I dunno if I'll be able to... I might be able to get down to Yarussos tonight... kiddlet permitting.. lol
I agree, I don't know if I will venture out tonight because I don't want to have my hoe stolen! On a serious note, I think that I want to go and participate for the social part at Yarusso's but I don't know if I will be there digging because I am just too tired. I think that because I don't have a great idea of where it would be, I am just going to enjoy the company of the friends that I have made in the hunt.
I agree with you on that one. A downed tree still has a base. It's not like you can't tell which end was the top and which was the bottom (well, usually anyway). I remember seeing a downed tree over by the spring and the gurgling water closest to the south end and there was quite a bit of ice under it. I don't know if anyone dug it out more last night.
I only post the number here on the cooler. I think if you ask for signups then it gets into loyalty and territory and membership issues that we've treaded down before and haven't liked where it got us. And at this point it's a crapshoot anyway for any/everybody.
Anybody can pay to be a part of AbleMinds. There are other parts to Ableminds you know. When you pay, you're not paying to get into our threads, just to joing AbleMinds.
So, anyone of the thousands of people that have paid to join AbleMinds can get in here and get the phone number and code for the conference call.
All I was doing out there was breaking up large clumps assuming it had to be inside one of them. No luck obviously, but I think it's quite possible it's already been moved by being in a large clump of hard snow.
That was my idea last night and it kind of happened naturally that way because people had their own ideas of where it was (on the high side, near the church, near the brewery). I don't think that will be the case tonight, since we seem to have it nailed down to somewhere along the creek.
I say a crew member every 10 feet along the creek...
If anyone is getting the conference call information by way of keeping up with this thread, which is about the only way to do it, then I think they've earned their Cooler Crew stripes.
Well, it's fine with me. It was just a thought I had, hadn't seem it brought up and thought I should. I agree with you Red Bear, about the issues that would arise. But I also know how sensitive most of us are to the Johnny-Come-Latelies stealing all our noodling.
I didn't know if it mattered to anyone having a JCL in on "our" phone call meant to help the 'Heads. Thass all!
Whatever makes you hard diggers and workers happy, makes me happy. You're the guys that have done all the work.

This hunt did seem to get everyone to remember Mr. Boxmeyer.
I had a friend whose father sold Electrolux door to door for years.

Back to those gangsters? and German molls?!
you would be collecting your fee for looking?
I thought of a Payday candy Bar.
But would they do that again in fear a critter would eat it?
Raccoons love candy (when all other food failed I put a candy bar in a live trap and caught him in a matter of hours)
So, apparently, is "Rake-off" ... but I don't think there was much of THAT going on last night.

Reason I ask, how do we know we're not letting 1/2 a dozen folks we don't know, like from the Mom Press Board?
No wonder we had a full 60 lines going last nite!
May want to consider folks signing up for a line and only getting that many lines...
Yust a thought.
Funny, green!
Maybe a Phone Call Thread just for the phone call or something.
I don't know but I just thought o'that when I saw it and saw so many hidden members on line...
