at first I was wondering when Terry was a vet. I started to think who I would call if I had a pet question... and thought she may have some more stories for Whitney. hehehe
I think he will be fine, look at his warm coat. And his cute face and sweet disposition...he is safe.... in someones house...warm an comfy...the trick will be to get him from that loving family.... :lipsealed:
I hope and pray he is with someone. He needs meds for epilepsy so that is a main concern. And hoping he won't bolt someplace dangerous when he's scared is another concern.
I suspect he's heading back to Brainerd - just my gut feeling.
They say he typically won't approach people - that's how my Aussie mix was too - and he'd bolt if anyone tried to approach or catch him.
I went to Pennys work christmas party last night and there was a girl there that knew about the dog and said a lot of people know about it. Small world. (She works in Burkhardt, Wi)
If the dog is on the rail road bridge he should be easy to catch. Post people at the end and he has no where to go exept in the river. I'd drive him to the island and get him there. Its a smaller area.
The dog was spotted on an island and was being watched there for quite awhile.
Then he got to the railroad bridge, where he apparently is right now.
Try to get people to be foresightful, and that is the most logical place he would try to cross, and of course you want someone on the MN side waiting, if nothing else to track him.
He would probably take the river if he was hemmed in - he is that skittish, but yeah, drive him back to that WI peninsula makes more sense safety wise.
Hawkeye is back on the WI side, on the island/peninsula part of the park.
His owner *should* be able to call him in, although he is not in immediate site, he has obviously been back to this spot time and again (by the tracks in the fresh snow) trying to figure out how to get back to MN so he can go home!!!
I would think the dog would come when called by anyone just because he would know his name. oh well, glad he is getting home safely. fur coat or not...its too cold.
Anyone else tired of hearing about lost dogs? We lost a dog for two weeks straight in the wintertime - but in rural MN there isn't anyone helping with satellite positioning and TV cameras. No one wants to see Hawkeye fall through the ice, but c'mon! Is this really a media event?
Pardon my bitterness, but where the hell was the police helicopters when me and my six year old brother humped through the woods in the snow screaming the dogs name at the top of our lungs for days on end, only to find out he hooked up with a hot date at a farm three miles away?
Maybe I'll just post the updates in this pets thread, and not in STB, and people can read the updates - or not.
My heart goes out to this dog - he was being transported from previous owner to new owner and in a completely foreign place. He is scared, not out there having fun like the Fox news story tried to make it sound. He is also the same breed as my dear Frodo.
My dogs have gone missing and no one was around to help me, either.
The people running the search tried hard to discourage the media circus - that was NOT their idea.
No, sounds like the reporter may have been one of the ones grabbing at the dog. He was joking about how he had the dog panting on his cell phone and was just sorry he beat the cameras there.
Tomorrow I hope they keep any sightings confidential to the desired searchers and possibly ask for help from a search/rescue group that can act professionally.
If Hawkeye did not already succumb to hypothermia after being scared into the icy river, the people who chased him today, after being specifically asked not to, will be lucky if he survives and can be found now.
Another sighting - things are looking more hopeful now. He sounds OK, even 24 hours after his river ordeal. Hoping he will be found safe and sound today!! Thanks all for keeping this little guy in your thoughts and prayers.
Looks like the search will continue tomorrow - here is the latest - which sounds encouraging:
"ok here the update: We just came back home. Camile (original owner of dog) is staying with me tonight, dad is in town doing some business. We have spotted Hawkeye and kinda know where he seems to be hanging his "Paws" We will head out tomorrow morning to the area which we seen him this evening and put live trap out and search when it is light. I think its positive looking. Keep the prayers coming!"
A dog in heat would be one of the first things I would've thought of.
You'd think the 'Bitch Bait' method would've been one of the first capture methods attempted. Maybe Hawkeye is just too good at his 'method' that he can hit and run without getting caught.
There is a dog known to Hawkeye on sight, along with his former owner.
They have offers of dogs in season to be brought out - not sure if they've tried that - they were waiting until the dog was sighted and on Monday the dog was out on a tiny island in the St. Croix, so too dangerous to bring out a dog in heat there.
I do know there were at least two dogs in heat who were on standby to be brought in if it seemed safe to do so.
The searchers are keeping things pretty quiet about location after Monday's fiasco.
They are reporting they see signs of where he is hanging out and did sight him off and on yesterday, so today they will be out there with various plans to try.
:barf: My poor baby is sick tonight ;-( I think she might have eatten to much ... from the sounds of it she ate a ton tonight (I was a school) Here's hoping that's it because I don't want to be sick darn it I have a party to be the guest of honor at on Saturday!
Hawkeye still missing. Last seen twice on Sunday 12/14 9 miles east of Hudson on Old Hwy. 12.
One hunch is that he took the railroad tracks from where he was hanging out by downtown Hudson and went east on them out to where Old Hwy. 12 does a 90-degree turn.
Then pan right one click and look where you end up! That is right where he was seen on Sunday.
I AM WONDERING IF HE IS RUNNING THE RAILS BACK AND FORTH???
We are hoping to get someone to walk/drive/snowmobile on/near the tracks - will find out first if they are active tracks.
We're getting more volunteers now, but will need to try to make a big impact over the next several days.
If anyone here WANTS to help drive roads and spot, search, take a shift checking live traps if that ends up being done, please PM me with your contact info and what you can help with and when would be your best times.
Otherwise, please keep Hawkeye in your thoughts and prayers along with all the poor little critters who are out there in the cold today.
Thanks so much!
If anyone believes in good luck signs, I just had a magnificent buck in the woods behind my house! A doe closer in. Couldn't get a close enough look at the buck to count the point and by the time I ran for camera and binocs, he was gone.
The sightings have been mostly by the public, and at a distance - very few close-up sightings.
Animal control (1 person for 16 municipalities) will not get involved unless the dog becomes a problem to the public.
Thoughts of putting tranquilizers in his food were put on hold because he was crossing the river on thin ice and they were afraid if the drugs took effect then, or really anywhere in this cold weather, he could just lay down and freeze to death.
I can only hope he is finding warm shelter and will surface again when the temps aren't quite so frigid as they have been the past few days.
From sketchy reports, I truly think he is looking for someone or some vehicle that he recognizes, having no way to know there is no such vehicle because everyone who has transported him has gone far away by now.
He is so single-minded about this quest (some Aussies are like this) that he makes sure to give wide berth to anyone who looks like they are trying to catch him.
should post that in the kid thread.
I suspect he's heading back to Brainerd - just my gut feeling.

Anyway, I'm wishing Hawkeye warm, sweet dreams tonight!

This is so riveting!!!
Former owner is there now.
Police and ice rescue are there too.
One of the TV stations is there, covering.
Rob Olson - whatever channel he is on.
Pardon my bitterness, but where the hell was the police helicopters when me and my six year old brother humped through the woods in the snow screaming the dogs name at the top of our lungs for days on end, only to find out he hooked up with a hot date at a farm three miles away?
heres hoping that they get Hawkeye home safely....
Dunno what I'd do if that was Bucky or Molly....
Como animal control has been pretty quick, with picking up dogs here, who have run away in the past....
Dogs arent stupid, either.... once they live someplace a while and feel like they're a part of the pack, they know where "home" is...
the phrase my mom always used was - they'll come home when they're hungry...

What website are you getting the info from?
yikes...
those are never good....
But I'll bet it helped.
Tomorrow I hope they keep any sightings confidential to the desired searchers and possibly ask for help from a search/rescue group that can act professionally.

I will check out where the story came from about him having the dog panting on his cell phone. Perhaps he was just joking.
The search team has gotten quieter about sightings and locations, communicating that info more discreetly now to avoid crowds coming out.
They state they have a good game plan and they feel confident they will bring him to safety - just a matter of time now.
Here is an update from just moments ago - I'm know you don't know all the players, but you'll get the jist:
Hey guys.
All I can update with is...
Things are going well. Nettie and KatieP are frozen to the bone, but happy. A couple of others helping them as well. These guys are !!!
Good progress today. Nettie may get on later and provide some more info.
Everyone hang tight and keep with the positive thoughts and prayers for everyone involved.

my neighbors dont have a fence, so their dog gets out from time to time.... If I bring Bucky out, she usually comes near him...
Ive helped coax her home a few times, doing that...
but then again, she knows Bucky too....

No sightings yesterday or today.
He's gone into hiding for 2-3 days earlier in the search, so everyone is hoping he will come out again soon.
As far as I know, he's eating the food they're leaving out for him.
If anyone knows of people who search for people/dogs let me know.
might know somebody...
he's currently enjoying his new digs in our bedroom, atop a dresser...
to go along with Azreal the cat, we named him Gargamel...
the Wii doesnt let us upload pics, or we would.

If it were a lion or a bear it woulda been caught already.
