CAT DIARY

Day 983 of my captivity...

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are

fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I

nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The

only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape.

In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their

feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it

clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made

condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am.

Bastards!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was

placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However,

I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my

confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what

this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my

tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking.

I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches.

The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and

seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

Speaking of dogs, did they ever catch Hawkeye?
Sun, 01/04/2009 - 6:43 PM Permalink

No. Last sighting was 12/11 on 11th Street in Hudson, although he'd been back and forth between Hudson and Afton between 11/30 and 12/11.

At this point, I hope that is what has happened.

There are still efforts being made to keep the word out there - flyers distributed at the dog show this weekend, and people keeping in contact with shelters. He could be just about anywhere by now, trying to find his way back to a place he knows, or have been taken in by some nice folks (I hope).

Our little boston terrier, Cappy, hates the cold and snow. She picks up her hind legs and walks on her front ones when she goes out.

Chelsea, our big mutt loves being outside period. Doesn't matter if it's -2 or 102 degrees.

Did anyone go to the dog show at River Center last weekend?

If you did, did you see any flyers about Hawkeye, the missing dog?

Can you guesstimate how many you saw and were they at the ticket booth, posted, or on a car windshield, etc.?

It would also help to know what time period you were there and which day.

Just trying to get a gauge of what the general public is seeing, in comparison with the efforts still being made.

Thanks for any info about this!

Sounds like little Hawkeye was very likely seen in Stillwater today.

A few searchers were able to go out, and one is pretty sure she saw him across the river near Houlton, but there aren't roads to get down by where she saw him.

The first sighter has seen many flyer photos of Hawkeye and was pretty confident that it could be him. The searcher was able to confirm that the dog was the right breed and size and had the naturally docked tail, so that bodes well for it being him, too.

Anyway, here are some photos. Anyone in the Stillwater area, please keep your eyes and ears open, ask around if anyone has seen him.

You can call me with any info and I will get the info immediately to the dog's owner and local searchers.

It is somewhere between 6-10 miles from Hudson to Houlton/Stillwater. The river is frozen solidly in most places now. He is sticking close to the river bed when he is out, we think. Fresh dog tracks were seen yesterday again. No human with the dog leaving the tracks. They left 3 pounds of cooked liver and some other food out there where they saw his tracks. They will go back this morning to see if the food is gone, although just it being gone does not mean HE ate it. They need to find someone to hire who can camp out, or at least sit in their car nearby and check the live traps every hour or so in this cold weather which is why they are not leaving a trap out yet - no one to monitor it 24/7 until someone can be found.
Mon, 01/12/2009 - 6:40 AM Permalink
Eags

The thing is - there are people involved who know dogs but can't - logistically - camp out or stay out there all night.

And I know there are probably thousands of people who know how to stay out all night and stay warm while searching, but the trick is finding someone who would WANT TO and who knows a bit about dogs. If the dog comes into the trap, no big deal - just would need to get the dog to a vet right away possibly if he doesn't seem to be doing well. Otherwise just get him in a warm place (trap and all, if necessary) until a search volunteer can come to get him. Trickier would be if he is not coming into the trap and needs to be lured. He is so agile, that to "catch" him is probably not going happen. He can go from 0 to fast, even from a lying down position. The person would need to sit or lay still, with food lures positioned between them and the dog, and let the dog come right up into their lap so they could slip a lead on him, or even invite him up into their car or shelter...

Anyway, many of us have read up and talked to dog experts about what needs to be done, but we are having a heck of a time finding anyone who can do this or who does this for hire.

So...Coolerheads...put your thinking caps on and if ANYONE occurs to you who might be able to do the above job, please let me know right away! 651-356-5470.

Thanks so much!

I know there are a lot of lost and abandoned dogs out there and I wish and pray they can all be helped.

This little guy touched my heart because he is lost in a place where he doesn't know anyone or anyplace familiar to go. It is probably too cold for him to make it back to Brainerd right now. He is having to take shelter and find food, and then just stay safe, so not making much progress, if any. The experts think he is in a pattern now, and repeats it over and over, because that's how he has survived since November 26.

We just want to bring this little guy home. The intention is that a good home will be found for him. No one hears from the "new owner" anymore, and she is taking no active part in the search or plans.

The woman who is willing to pay or hire someone to find him is Gail 913-221-3454. If you have ideas you think might help, please call her or me. She called some of the local dog clubs, thinking they might know of a tracker/live trapper, but has not heard back yet. She is just heartbroken over what has happened to this dog due to the negligence at several places along the line. Unfortunately, the people involved are still sleeping in nice warm homes and the poor dog is out there scared, cold and hungry. He was noticeably thinner than when last seen, four weeks prior.

Thanks for reading this - I know there are a lot of animal lovers in our crowd. Please keep little Hawkeye in your thoughts and prayers, and visualize him safe and warm and with a full tummy!

I think this pertains to dads too though -

Invisible Mother......

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone (or even on the toilet) and ask to be taken somewhere.

Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm busy?'

Obviously, not.

No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all.

I'm invisible. The invisible Mom . Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this?

Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel ?' I'm a taxi to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

I was cer tain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated sum a cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going; she's going; she is gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England.

Lisa had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in.

I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself.

I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.'

It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe.

I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: 'To Charlotte , with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work.

No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished. They made great sacrifices and expected no credit. The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place.

It was almost as if I hea rd God whispering to me, 'I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.'

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life.

It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.

I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on.

The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I real ly think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving , 'My mom gets up at 4:00 in the morning and bakes homemade pies. Then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'you're gonna love it there.'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right.

And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Great Job, MOM! .... and dad

Me2, that dog show always takes place the first weekend in Jan. It's an AKC show usually sponsered by land o lakes. I used to go every year until the stopped doing the agility competitions. The show breeds were in the river center part and the agility used to be upstairs in the Roy Wilkins part. Many owners/handlers complained it was too crowded to get to their rings on time so they got rid of the agility competitions and moved all the small breed judging rings upstairs.

I thought the agility was the funnest part, especially the novice class.

Cup of Tea

One day my mother was out and my dad was in charge of me.

I was maybe 2 1/2 years old and had just recovered from an accident.

Someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a get-well gift and it was

one of my favorite toys.

Daddy was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I

brought Daddy a little cup of "tea," which was just water. After several

cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Mom came home.

My Dad made her wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of

tea, because it was "just the cutest thing!" My Mom waited, and sure

enough, here I come down the hall with a cup of tea for Daddy and she

watches him drink it up.

Then she says, (as only a mother would know . . . ),

"Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get water

is the toilet?"

I wonder if we should change the title of this thread to Pets, Kids, Spouses and Parents?

Lots of folks in the Cooler are in the middle of the "sandwich" right now - not an easy place to be!

My parents have been gone now for 13 years, but we had our turn. Now I can see the potential for how it might go when *I* am old.

My heart goes out to all of you who are needing to be there for your parents right now.
