We got a lead on the found dog today, and this is soooooo weird!
I've been posting and e-mailing all over Minnesota.
Tonight, I got a call from an agility trainer who says the dog is a dead ringer for her dog, whom she got from a kennel in Brainerd. She thinks the kennel might be able to help us figure out if it was from one of their litters, and if so, where we might try to find the owner.
I looked up the kennel online, and find that the last name of the family who runs the kennel is the same as the last name of the people who sold Hawkeye, only to have him end up lost on his way to his new home. The two families appear to live on farms near one another, so they are likely brothers.
It is difficult to understand why we've not had one solid lead in finding the owner of the dog now being called Lucky. Lucky to not have been hit by a car. Lucky to have been found just one day before snow and cold set in. Lucky to have a warm, loving home while we look for his family.
There needs to be one central clearinghouse for lost and found dog information.
We'll keep you posted. If his family isn't found, he *will* have a good forever home.
I just think it is so sad if there is someone missing him, they may never know what happened to him.
On Christmas Eve, a wonderful border collie went to live in his new forever home!
It is a young, active family with three children.
The new family member is right at home, and the family says it as if he has always been in their family.
Due to the weather and glitches with job and holiday commitments, we were not able to pull off having Santa deliver the doggie, but things worked out just fine anyway.
The kids, who were hoping for a dog, but thinking that was not realistic, were so stunned when their dad came home with a dog, at first they didn't comprehend that it was their Christmas gift!
A great big thank you to everyone who helped this story have a happy ending!
Are you here in the Cities, Eags? Or is the dog living in MI? Nice story. So sad that the original owners will never know that their dog is fine and in a loving home and not dead on the side of the highway somewhere.
I am in the cities for the holidaze. Going home Tuesday, weather permitting.
We made so many efforts to find the dog's family. It is the concensus of everyone involved that the dog was abandoned.
We posted (with up to 5 photos) on at least 15 lost/found pet websites, notified five humane societies, as well as border collie rescue, dog clubs, state parks, veterinarians and farm co-ops in the area, and the Fergus Falls newspaper ran an ad (and that is where the humane society also runs their ads for dogs they are "housing").
If someone was looking for the dog (he was not microchipped) they sure weren't looking very hard.
He is a very Lucky dog indeed to now have a loving family to provide for his comfort, health, safety and to just love him!
Then it truly is a win, win story for all, especially the dog! He probably wouldn't have fared as well if he'd been picked up by the highway patrol and taken to a shelter. Good for everyone who helped.
We have 4 dogs: a black Cocker Spaniel that we purchased 12 years ago (Brutus - he's now 13 and takes more meds than I do!). An American Eskimo that we rescued (Nemo), a Mini Schnauzer that we rescued in Feb. 2009 (Einstein), and our recent addition is a Chow mix (Zera) rescued the day after Christmas.
No kids, just dogs. Brutus is not in great health, but he isn't suffering. Just on a lot of drugs!
Thanks Eags. We love 'em. Been married 22 years and raised 4 other Cockers who are now gone (Corky, Freeway, Maverick & Goose), so we've always had dogs.
Funny thing is, the Schnauzer doesn't know he's the smallest dog. He and the Chow mix play like they're playing tackle football, and Einstein is quite the instigator. NO fear in that one! One of these days I need to video that. It's pretty funny!
You folks are great. Zera (f/k/a Zena) was adopted from the Humane Society here in San Antonio. The image I'm posting now is the artist's hand-drawn depiction of her. And he was spot on. There was a message on the back, from the artist to her.
BTW, all of our dogs are fixed except the old Cocker Spaniel. That doesn't stop the humping though. Sheesh! (I could make a comparison to fixed humans, but I won't!). Ha!
P.S. My hubby named this one...I like her name (ZENA), but he renamed her ZERA (like the chimpanzee doc in the "Planet of the Apes"). Our new dog is named after a monkey. Go figure.
But she answers to it. And is our lovely girl. Now, I am no longer the lone female in the house!
Isn't that a lovely drawing? I have the original, and will frame it.
Only been bit once so far. But, children bite too, or so I've heard. She's learning her boundries and I'm teaching her. Honestly, she really is a loving dog. And she smiles a lot. We are thankful for our Monkey-Dog.
I do look forward to getting a puppy - but like babies, you forget the bad stuff. I think humans are programed to forget certain pains and hardships so they can endure more - I would get another puppy even though my rottie (Taiga -who died years ago) chewed my books, shoes, the couch arms! She wouldn't touch my x's shoes but always chewed mine if I left the house for 20 minutes!! I'm about ready for another pup after all these years. I was devestated when she died even though I hated to love her. Having a baby is amazing... and PAINFUL! why we ever decide to have more is beyond my comprehension. The secret to life is in there somewhere.
I love Snow.We were SO wishing for some REAL snow...Didn't see it in Durango. Saw some in NM on the way home, though, in a couple spots to actually my hubby (Cliff) slow down his driving. Fog, ice, sleet.
My heart is breaking. Zera is going back to the Humane Society. Rather suddenly, she is NOT getting along with the other dogs at all, and bit the Eskie so badly last night that I thought stitches would be required.
I know, I know...but, she IS a sweet and loving dog. She just needs to be the ONLY dog in a household. We did the meet and greet and all went well. Now, two months later, she has become so protective of her "humans" that the other dogs are suffering terribly.
I have cried for a day and a half. We take her back on Thursday morning. Rather, my husband does. I can't miss any more work and, honestly, I can't do it. Sorry to go on so, and I hope Zera finds her TRUE forever home, as we obviously were not "it."
So sorry it didn't work out, KK. I'm sure you did everything in your power to try to make it work, but you both will be a lot happier as a result of your decision. As will your other pets.
Thanks, OT. I stayed home from work yesterday (sick) and was afraid to let the dogs around each other until my husband got home. After he got home, we let them be together and they were pretty much okay.
My husband wants to try and make this work, so we canceled the "Return to Shelter" appointment which was scheduled for tomorrow. We will see if this works out or not. I'm a little nervous, but she's a 50 pound dog, long haired Chow mix,and 4 years old. This type of dog is very difficult to adopt out in this climate. Even though the Humane Society is a "no-kill" shelter, her chances of ever living outside a kennel are next to none. So, we are going to try our hardest.
When we adopted her, we made a decision to give her a "forever home" and we both feel that we have to give it more time to see if we can make it work. It's our responsibility. WE have to be the "leaders" of this pack!
I'm a firm believer that pets are not "throwaway" items. I've already got a number for a trainer who may be able to help us, but I'll have to make a little extra money first. Until then, it's up to us. And after that, it's up to us.
Diggin' daughter slid on an ice patch and rolled the car last night with both the boys insde  thank God they are all ok....everyone was all buckled in.
They were all hanging upside, baby Heath is crying...big brother Dom, 6 years, in the back seat together is calming saying "it's ok Heath" "we are ok" "we'll be ok". He was the calm one! Witnesses were quick to the scene, baby Heath was out first. Mom was totally worried about the kids of course. Mom was trying to get out, they got Digger Dom - then mom. The ambulance came and they all went to the hospital...all checked out ok, praise the Lord.
Mom is sore and bruises are popping out all over. The boys were in their seats and they are fine, Car is totaled ... I was stuck in Wausau and couldn't even get there....scarey. I can't handle this!
At 5 months Heath is a 'linebacker' and Sunday mom had just bought him his new car seat (1yr plus) apparently if a car seat is involved in a crash you are advised to get a new car seat  safety first! Goodby $75.
I will be keeping you in my thoughts as you work through this!
There may be a dog whisperer/dog behaviorist in your area and probably would be worth looking into.
I also found The Dog Whisperer book so helpful in being more of a pack leader. He talks about how to differentiate fear-based aggression from other types, and he gets pretty specific about what works, what doesn't.
Have you read any of Temple Grandin's books? She's got some awesome insight too.
Our Reba had fear-based aggression. We used consistency of routine as a way to make her day predictable. We watched her like a hawk, and when she would show any signs of licking her lips, pacing, any nervousness, we would help her have some time to herself on her bed, so she could get away from the stressors. This was especially true when we had company, as she easily became confused when there was a lot of commotion.
I also use/used (for myself and my dogs) Rescue Remedy, liberally. There is a pet version of it out now. It helps calm and focus without any side effects. It is made of flower essences. I learned about it from my dog trainer, and with it, my gentle but skittish border collie/aussie mix and I were able to get certified to do therapy dog work.
We have resorted to locking up our dog during the night and work days in the kitchen... today when we got home there was 1 large puddle and 2 smaller ones... poor old girl.
:frown:
Can't wait for nicer weather to get here - at least then she will be outside most of the time.

It's a small world, for sure.

please let me know if you come across a Lady and the Tramp female Spaniel puppy that needs a home.

We are the "parents" after all.
No matter the troubles, like kids, you don't give them away or back no matter how much you want to at times.
I really hope you can find a feng shui way to calm your household.

Would that be covered by insurance too?
Hugs Digs - I know Grama has got to be in shambles
Include the car seat with the claim. Worst case, they turn it down.

For no other reason than I thought it was cute
