Morning all! Does anybody have an idea other than Greg's of what it might be hidden IN? It's about time for more hints about what to look for. It seems late in the clue count for words about this. Any thoughts?

"a place made for hikin'"- Football field?  Sure, I'm on the Crosby wagon myself but there have been several possible football references to this point. What parks have football fields in or nearby?

OTS-- i saw your name in the snow there yesterday! i dug and dug around that damn tree. today i'm diging around and towards that shelter!

For those who don't know me, don't yell at me for being an online squatter. I don't need any "go to the park, computer geek" comments. I'm writing to you from San Francisco. I'd love to be among y'all, but I'm afraid it's not possible again this year.

GREG - you are the last person we would yell at!!!THANKS!!!!!!!!

Are there ski-thighys at BC?  You know, those little huts with a fire ring where when you're sking you go in and and sit on this bench and get warm around this little fire ring-thighy?

Just tryin' to keep an open mind.  OKAY!  I'm OBSESSED!

My egram thing isn't working.  I can open them, but it won't let me respond.  Won't send it.  It just stays there when I hit reply.  Any suggestions?

I think it's taped to the bottom of a Pledge can.

This hunt is different than the Harriet/Como hunt.  Back then there were still a number of people who weren't totally set on Harriet.  It just seemed to fit the best.  With this hunt, most people feel Crosby.  If they don't, it's more from it seeming too easy that it could be there.  That or a desire to not have it there.

Hey, anybody with GPS going out to the park today?  If Greg is right about someone taking down the numbered signs out there, maybe we should try and get gps coordinates of them (if they are still up).  That way people have an idea of where they are supposed to be if they are in fact taken?

Moss is lichen, right?  Moss only grows on a certain side of a tree.  Maybe the clue is directional and indicating which section of the park to focus.

I know that people are gunshy after the Harriet/Como debaucle, however, I think that is what the PP is banking on. I have a hard time seeing any other park than Crosby at this point. I think that the cluewriter assumes that half the people will think that the clues pointing us to Crosby are baiting us to the wrong park and not commit this early. I for one think it has to be Crosby simply because there are hardly any landmarks and the place is huge. The clues fit extremely well and the vastness of the park would prevent someone from finding it right away. Lord help us if it goes 12 because that would be a nightmare.

I don't know if those signs are being taken down or not....most are missing and I honestly think the have been for a LONG time...

but if any do go missing I'll let you know...

currently the only ones I saw are...

#2, #3, #10, #17

tree's with red paint are #10 and #5...could be more...just don't know where

I'm admitting I'm one of those that is extremely gunshy about Crosby...

why? slightly because I just hate it....

I don't like parking, taking my girls down there, etc...etc....etc....

but currently I've got no other ideas....

** can somebody please post the clue EXACTLY as it is in the paper....I think the Press website is off a little....***

Lichens:

" n: A symbiotic relationship between a fungus and a moss. The moss does most of the work, producing sugars for the lichen's collective metabolic pathways. Lichen are generally low-growing, vary in color from bright orange or yellow to gray or black, and are often found growing on rocks and tree bark. An easy mnemonic to assist recall of the nature of a lichen's symbiosis is: "A fungus took a likin' to a moss, and now they live together."

"Any of numerous complex plants growing in symbiotic association (a mutually beneficial relationship) on a solid surface such as a rock."

"Plant-like colonies of fungi and algae that grow on the exposed surface of rocks. Lichen grow at a constant rate within a single geographic area."

I am totally with you on the safety. I would not want to be down there by myself and I don't even think I would feel comfortable with a partner at night. However, I think that it is dangerous to over-analzye these clues because after the clue descriptions come out I am sure that we will see that a lot of us are right on the money. I think that that the parking sucks and the fact that they close the gate and you have to walk down that hill is a pain in the arse. I would bet that it is there someplace. It could be hidden until March though due to the immensity of the park.

Today's Clue -- January 27, 2005

A branch, a lichen, a place made for hikin',
Is where a prize is earned.
Don't run, helter skelter, seek out solid shelter
With room and wood to burn

I did not know that, that is wacky wild stuff. I thought that someone said that they were closed and that you had to walk down that huge hill. Well then, I guess that makes it a whole lot easier and accessible.

Actually, tim, it never bothers me when I'm not first with the clue.  I like that there are others posting it.  Last year, I got some nasty grams from folks who would be waiting for it, and I decided to go out hunting.  I know it is not fun to wait the extra hour for it, so if folks wanna beat me, I'm happy.

Lichens

are not a single plant.

A
lichen
is a complex group of plants depending on a close association between a FUNGUS and ALGAE - a symbiotic relationship.

A lichen consists of an upper part of interwoven fibres related to the fungus and a layer of more loosely fibrous structures related to the fungus that surrounds the algae.

The algae can carry out photosynthesis and feed the fungi. The fibrous structures that make up the fungi adds support to the algae and keeps the algae from drying out.

Language of Flowers: Lichen means "dejection" and "solitude".

Didn't they have to cover their ears and *not* listen?  Because if they did, they'd go nutty and would follow the siren's song into the rocks and crash and burn.

So...  Izzit or izzit *not* a white Christmas?
