SECOND CHANCE FOR SHUTTLE SIGHTINGS: Monday's planned landing of space shuttle Discovery was waved off because of bad weather in Florida. The postponement sets the stage for another try on Tuesday. Once again, Discovery is slated to reenter Earth's atmosphere over the continental United States, and many sky watchers--especially in the northwestern USA and neighboring Canada--could witness a beautiful pre-dawn reentry. The exact ground track depends on weather and whether mission controllers decide to send Discovery to land in Florida or California. Nominally, Discovery would pass diagonally across the country, passing over, e.g., Minneapolis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Jacksonville en route to a 7:34 am EDT landing at the Kennedy Space Center. On the other hand, a redirect to Edwards Air Force Base would strongly favor observers in California. Please check http://spaceweather.com for more information and updates as the re-entry time approaches.
I heard if they go with a 237th orbit 1st attempt at KSC, the shuttle should pass over us about 6:15 am. about 15 minutes before landing.. interesting. My roommate will be at work at the time, and since Nasa isn't going to make a decision until the morning, I told him to give me a wake up call if they do go with that option.
First Landing Try Waved Off Tue, 20 Apr 2010 05:24:35 AM CST Good morning from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The weather is significantly better than yesterday, but not good enough yet. The first landing opportunity this morning at 7:34 a.m. has already been called off because of concerns that fog or showers could be in place by the time landing would take place. The second try at Kennedy comes at 9:08 a.m. Capcom Rick Sturckow told Discovery's crew there is still reason for optimism that weather here will improve in time for the second landing. In case it doesn't, the runway at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., has been called up. The first chance to land there comes a few minutes earlier, at 9:01 a.m.
KARE 11 just said it won't be seen here. :frown: But I'm going to wait until I hear that from NASA.
Discovery to Aim for Runway 33 Tue, 20 Apr 2010 06:52:20 AM CST Discovery Commander Alan Poindexter will steer the shuttle toward a final approach and landing on Runway 33 at Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility. That means the shuttle will come in from the southeast of the runway, heading to the northwest. There is only one runway at the SLF, but it's referred to by different numbers to reduce confusion. An approach from the northwest is called Runway 15, said "One - five" over the radios, but an approach from the southeast is called Runway 33, or "Three-three."
That map shows it coming in from the NW so I don't understand the lingo when it says it will approach from the SE. The anticipation of seeing it was fun though. :frown:
Commander Alan Poindexter and Pilot James P. Dutton Jr. are steering Discovery through a long overhead turn to line up with the runway. The twin sonic booms indicative of a shuttle arrival were just heard at the SLF.
I remember when we'd regularly hear sonic booms overhead from jet fighter planes breaking the speed of sound. Now they restrict them to over unpopulated areas. It was cool to hear them though.
cluey, marley, ian, and anyone else so inclined, i found an event for you next year.
so i was at the u today meeting with my advisor. picked up a copy of the daily, flipped it over to this article. i really have to wonder how the chief of police managed to get the top cop job at a major public research institution without knowing the significance of the number and the day. i especially liked ucb's 10000 attendee "event" last year and ucsc's near sanctioning of the event by the cops.
Just stopping by to let you all know I'm still here.... sorta  Hope all is well with everyone.. just getting ready to celebrate Kaitlynn's 3rd birthday which was April 12th....having a small get together on Saturday..miss you all!
On the seventh earth day (1977), we received our son's referral from Korea. He was three weeks old by then and we had two wallet size photos of him at just a few days old.
I always found that quite fitting that he, born halfway around the world, connected with his family on such a special day.
And now that he is a tree hugger, its even more fitting.
I just heard About it on the radio thing it was some dumb jack station I was walking past a Apt. in the building and they were talking about it!!
And I had to check it out!! And sure enough there it was a easy search on this thing called a Computer and the Other thing called the Internet! And Hazza there it was!! kind of kool but it wont go any were like the Horseless carige it wont Last!!
Got it. The season ticket holders put up their seats for sale even before a concert comes since they have the right to purchase their own seat first if they want. I think that's how it works. Maybe not. It doesn't seem fair. Maybe for playoffs but not for concerts. Plus how could they get floor seats anyway?
thats why I said I was a glimmer in the eye already.
If I wasn't concieved I wouldn't be a glimmer yet.
They found out at the end of April about me, right when mom started getting sick the week they were married.
- They were actually married April 20 or 21st (My mom doesn't remember the exact date-funny, usually it's the man that doesn't remember his anniversary).
So they may have been married on the first Earth Day.....oh wait...on the actual 420 ...heh ...between the 2 days would be cool.
Acorn needs some cleanup - not trash - mostly from the wind blowing tree crap all over the place. That driving wind on Friday made the last few holes across that open hilly field interesting. I drove well, but when the wind got under the driver it would hop up and down in mid-air like it was having a seizure. Bizarre to watch.
Funny: My friend Kevin ran the ACORN office, which just closed, and it also needed cleanup last week. I saw MD's "acorn needs "cleanup" and thought huh, small world.
KARE 11 just said it won't be seen here. :frown: But I'm going to wait until I hear that from NASA.

Coming in from the southeast doesn't sound good for us.
