2011 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt

Submitted by ares on

If you're not planning to be at the Rehash Bash, you can still register by sending me the money via Paypal to this email address or send me an email and I'll give you an address to send the check to.

I expect we'll get a big turnout this year so there should be some good competition.

Clue #1

It seems the PP had trouble you see
With many cries of things that went afoul
Were attacks baseless? You might think tasteless,
Some considered throwing in the towel.

With a hunt cut short plans had to abort
The poor kiddies just did not understand
But no need to fear, a new hunt is here
The Mock Hunt by Allison Wonderland

Let's be obvious, not so devious,
And say plainly it's in a St. Paul park.
Buried in the snow, you might want to know
At least ten paces to the closest mark

Clue #2

If this hunt's taxing, maybe relaxing
Would be nice off in a warm floral home
But like the big fall where once they played ball
You will not be able to spot a dome.

Clue #3

Hunters get surly when hunts end early
Leaving them hardly time to sit and eat.
Yet a reminder, a two time finder,
Well you'll see that he has no time for cold feet

Clue #4

Prove you're not knaves where towers by graves
Loom ominously on the horizon
Don't focus on wealth, take care of your health
An ill body can cause you to wizen

Clue #5

If treasure you seek, make your move oblique
You can no longer go to the castle
To show expertise stay close to the trees
And finding the coin will seem quite facile.

Clue #6

Digging in the cold or panning for gold
Is a hard way to come by quick riches.
Pick up a guitar, become a rock star
Soon you’ll be surrounded by…ladies.

Clue #7

A great house of law is not made from straw
Yet the pulse of a building can be stilled
Its stones not eschewed, their purpose renewed
For here yet is land on which to rebuild.

Clue #8

With some derring-do and a fearless crew
You could find treasure out on the open sea
But you’ll come up short if too close to port
So go starboard and stick around for tea.

Clue #9

So where do you go with all of this snow?
You might be driving in circles by now.
Best look for a boat, one that does not float
And steer away from its snow covered bow

Clue #10

On a snowy night, by a street lamp’s light
From up on high we bid the coin adieu.
There will be no hints for we left no prints
You see, that night, the medallion, it flew.

Thanks. It doesn't feel like 40 years - most of the time.

It occurred to me when we were talking to Sunny and I was thinking of our first hunt together at Wakefield and I realized that was 1971.

think of warm floral home as the conservatory but maybe that's what everyone else thinks also? mums the word...

like the possible old downtown pillbox baseball park reference and it once being in the shadow of the capitol, or lexington park or the big fall being the millers and the water powered but what could it possibly mean? he he.. surly is good beer.

A statement as ridiculous as this doesn't warrant clarification.

we thought of the conservatory too, but since you can't see a dome, we figured that leaves the conservatory out. unless town square is open (i loved that place) its out of the running too although it would have been a perfect for the clue.

wasn't "dome" used at como before?..

plus i think we're not supposed to see one, or something

Yeah. In 2003, the clue said "a view of the capitol dome", and it was referring to the mural on the wall by the pool.

personally i think jake needs to step up to the plate and explain why he can get away with hunting for the medallion when he clearly represented the pioneer press in the parade saturday night. i have photographic proof of it too. jake, why won't you answer these allegations????

an alleged cheater who refuses to face the inquisition regarding these allegations.

That was the perfect example of how people buy into things even when based on nothing but slanderous lies. As long as it's posted enough times it becomes true.

Sur is spanish for South, although Sud is an adjective for south in spanish also. I Don't know about the Jake Video tho...

Sur in Sur la tab (or Sur la table) is to lay the table - to set it (French).
Tue, 02/08/2011 - 12:08 PM Permalink
ares

or on, as in sur la plage (on the beach)

Wabbit Hutch

This is what he must have meant about surly since he said something about the south entrance. It didn't quite come out that way in his excitement. I don't think it has anything to do with the mock hunt (unless the repetition of the word is important, yes, this might be important to my current theory) I mean, it probably doesn't mean South. But, really that might help narrow it down in a particular park if you have one in mind.

Speaking of dome, I can only think of Capital Dome. I think I am permanently scarred from 2003. Every joke of a clue I ever tell seems to come from that hunt....

Seems like the park I am thinking right now had a bag of North Star Ice there in 2003. Any takers?

but maybe its saying its a park with a conservatory dome but you cant see it from the hiding spot in the park.
Tue, 02/08/2011 - 4:12 PM Permalink
Wabbit Hutch

Could be. If it's at Como somebody else can find it. I don't feel like going there. I think Allison would choose a small park personally.

Strangely interesting clue. Now if I could figure out what it means....hmmmmmmmmmmm
Tue, 02/08/2011 - 5:10 PM Permalink
Terry

Towers by graves on the horizon.

Towers could be radio/tv towers, tall buildings, cell phone towers.

But by graves has me a bit stumped.

Unless the towers are obelisks inside a cemetery. That would make me think especially about Oakland in the north end. There's also Elmhurst, the Jewish cemetary across Larpenteur from Elmhurst, Calvary off Front.

Then it could be Union or Ramsey Cty Poor Farm cemetary...or Forest Lawn.

Some of these are outside the city limits, but seen on the horizon would make that possible in some locations.

Kirk Condie was buried at Fort Snelling Nat'l. I doubt there is any park in St. Paul that you could see that.

Water towers is another choice.

I'm Stuck. Is it time for an Ann Bilanski reference? I think she was buried in that cemetery along Pierce butler or below como or whatever. So much for 2003. I was liking my park.... now.... I will have to check my original 8-9 from day 1.

Calgary can be seen from the Dale St. bridge and parts from Pierce Butler I think. I see that so often, I can't remember exactly, but that is east of Lexington.
