2011 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt

Submitted by ares on

If you're not planning to be at the Rehash Bash, you can still register by sending me the money via Paypal to this email address or send me an email and I'll give you an address to send the check to.

I expect we'll get a big turnout this year so there should be some good competition.

Clue #1

It seems the PP had trouble you see
With many cries of things that went afoul
Were attacks baseless? You might think tasteless,
Some considered throwing in the towel.

With a hunt cut short plans had to abort
The poor kiddies just did not understand
But no need to fear, a new hunt is here
The Mock Hunt by Allison Wonderland

Let's be obvious, not so devious,
And say plainly it's in a St. Paul park.
Buried in the snow, you might want to know
At least ten paces to the closest mark

Clue #2

If this hunt's taxing, maybe relaxing
Would be nice off in a warm floral home
But like the big fall where once they played ball
You will not be able to spot a dome.

Clue #3

Hunters get surly when hunts end early
Leaving them hardly time to sit and eat.
Yet a reminder, a two time finder,
Well you'll see that he has no time for cold feet

Clue #4

Prove you're not knaves where towers by graves
Loom ominously on the horizon
Don't focus on wealth, take care of your health
An ill body can cause you to wizen

Clue #5

If treasure you seek, make your move oblique
You can no longer go to the castle
To show expertise stay close to the trees
And finding the coin will seem quite facile.

Clue #6

Digging in the cold or panning for gold
Is a hard way to come by quick riches.
Pick up a guitar, become a rock star
Soon you’ll be surrounded by…ladies.

Clue #7

A great house of law is not made from straw
Yet the pulse of a building can be stilled
Its stones not eschewed, their purpose renewed
For here yet is land on which to rebuild.

Clue #8

With some derring-do and a fearless crew
You could find treasure out on the open sea
But you’ll come up short if too close to port
So go starboard and stick around for tea.

Clue #9

So where do you go with all of this snow?
You might be driving in circles by now.
Best look for a boat, one that does not float
And steer away from its snow covered bow

Clue #10

On a snowy night, by a street lamp’s light
From up on high we bid the coin adieu.
There will be no hints for we left no prints
You see, that night, the medallion, it flew.

What if the graves are the Indian Mounds?

I believe a person could see at least the cathedral dome from there though.

There were two women who found it in 1966 at Harriet Island and 1972 in Marydale.

We've had a mock hunt at Marydale.

Marydale has all those flowery named streets - Jessamine being the closest and bordering.

A great deal of that park sits fairly low to the surrounding neighborhood. It might be worth a look-see to see what's visible off on the horizon.

I thought Mounds was good since there's a tower and lots of huge graves

But I think one can see the cathedral dome from there. I might be wrong though.

Phalen also has Ivy, Hyacinth, Orange, etc nearby. Where would the graves be there in the distance with towers?

I can't see any dome from the East side of the hill at Mounds

I love Mounds.

I like mounds too, but on the horizon. A place where you can see mounds.

I love Almond Joy

I initially was thinking church towers and Oakland cemetery when I read tonight's clue. I know Magnolia runs down the northern end of that cemetery, but can't think of any parks really nearby, except for the now defunct Sylvan rec center.

There is that very small Lewis Park but that is further north and on the west side of Rice St.

The Front Rec Center is close to Calgary.

What is the name of that park that can be seen off 35?

There is also the rec center at Lawson and Rice. Oakland is just east of Rice just about there...or maybe a bit south of there.

The write up for Lewis Park from Mappy's book says:

This is just a block west of Rice Stree near the area of the Capitol. Its not far from train yards, salvage yards, and a block north of an Xcel facility. Adjacent to the park is a 6 story high rise. Homes on the north and west sides. Views to the south offer a red and white striped antenna, the onion bulb steeple of St. Mary's Roman Orthodox Church, the tip of the capitol, and a grain elevator with one tower that is topped with a staggered edge as though it were a castle. Kind of small, but kind of secretly tucked into the neighborhood. Near Rice-Lawson Rec Center.

Lawson and Rice? Are you thinking of Washington Middle school? I dunno, I'm totally clueless and in the dark, as usual....and in between Emily's hockey and Hannah's play don't know when I'll even be able to go out and scout areas.

Maybe tomorrow...yeah, I said that last night

Cayuga Square Park is the one that is visible from 35E. Mappy's write up includes homes on the west and south sides, Tilsner Carton Co. and scrap yards across the freeway. Close to Ramsey Hospital and Oakland Cemetery. Views to the east Hamm's brewery and smokestack, a grain elevator, and a 3M water tower.

Last noodle of the night.

Don't focus on wealth, take care of your health

An ill body can cause you to wizen

Health club, health clinic, dental office, chiropractor, surgical center on Phalen Blvd.

I know it can be seen from Cherokee. The clue says no dome visible.

Graves hotel in Downtown Minneapolis? It could just be an elaborate way of saying that you can see downtown Minneapolis from the treasure site.

I keep thinking there is a history lesson in there like a building that was once a hospital but is no longer .... I think there is one near/ at phalen. And I want to say there is one around daytons bluffs?

ooh - good one! There is the old Gillette hospital for crippled children (or something like that) just off of Wheelock/Forest/Ivy area...not sure but I think there's one building still there - but that is the site where the hospital was.

Dayton's Bluff has Metro State University - where St. John's hospital used to be.

plainly in a st. paul park means no rec centers? or just.. it's in st. paul not ramsey (battle creek) county?

So I like a park based on one word in clue one. Didn't know what to think of clues 2-3 so tried to fit it to the park. It's asking for trouble I know but after these last two clues I feel a lot better about my park. Now to find time to look for it...

I was thinking of this also. What is the general Cooler Crew Definition of Park? (Rec Center? Playground?)

I believe it could mean either.

Allison posted the clue in another thread probably being an error or sneaky.

The 5th clue is posted above now though.

I am getting nowhere thinking about ex White Castles or Burger Kings. Also, past locations of the Ice Palaces. Hmm. Still nowhere.

Oops, I did post it in the wrong thread.

Here is the new clue:

Clue #5

If treasure you seek, make your move oblique

You can no longer go to the castle

And the previous clues:

Loom ominously on the horizon

DonÂ’t focus on wealth, take care of your health

An ill body can cause you to wizen

Clue #3

Hunters get surly when hunts end early

I thought about the 1985 hunt that ended in Kellogg along the river. That year it was found in a white castle box under a boulder.

But those two guys only found it once.

There once was a white castle near downtown on west 7th if I remember correctly.

Not that any of this gets anywhere.

good noodle on the white castle box TV. CM was just telling me about how he raked a white castle box and kept going that year.

I like Kellogg for the 1st cemetery

You might be able to see mounds from Kellogg (graves)- Horizon. I had a friend kick up a White Castle Box that year. He didn't look at it. He was a long time East Sider.

I have a park in mind now, but I cannot get Clue #3 to work at all.

That was the year we were convinced it was at Harriet Island and thought all those goofs up in Kellogg were nutz. :pbpt:

There is only one connection I can make to a two time finder and Kellogg at this point. Jake used to live at Galtier Towers before he moved and had the medallion put practically in his back yard.

That is stretch that went way too far.

The reason I liked White Castle is it says castle, it doesn't say ice palace

Mounds Park had a hospital on it long ago and Cerenty Care center is there now.

The 2 base ball fields have no bases on them

and trees on the mound near the baseball field

I think the clue would be to stay away from the picnic area and playground

Mounds are graves and next to the light radio tower?

thats all I got for their though

Kellogg is blocked by building so you cant see the domes

I think maybe the THEY clue is the TWINS = domes (not identical twins though)

This is a stretch but Jake lives by Battle Creek park (everyone knows that) - Kellogg Company is in Battle Creek, Michigan?

A park with no baseball or playground

Stay away from the Peoples Bank and the #1 - closer to YMCA for your health

Kellogg had a cemetery (bodies were eventually finally moved to Calvary Cemetery)

I've been tooing and froing and got to thinking about the snow castles that were often part of the Winter Carnival.

There was one in 2009 at the Fair Grounds

A picture of it is here: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/18456141

Having said that, the snow castles were often at Kellogg and were used for the battle between King Boreas and the Vulcans at the end of the torchlight parade.

The hunt is on!

No one reporting they have found the medallion yet. For that matter, no one reporting they have looked for the medallion yet. I don't expect many will with this cold, but it's supposed to warm up Friday and then I bet most everyone will be out over the weekend.

clue 1 - it's 10 paces from a "land" mark?

clue 2 - it's not at como

clue 3 - it's not at como, jake doesn't have it but possibly a park where you can eat lunch? oh and 'sit and eat' anagrammed = satan diet

clue 4 - cemetery nearby and possible healthcare facility

clue 5 - it's not at fort snelling? oblique order, military move? fort = castle

so it's at highland?
