Getting kid clutter out of the house is step one. Gives parents hope of regaining control.

That is speaking from experience. Brian moved out and in and out and in - leaving traces of him around here once he moved out for good.

Brenda has stuff stored here and it wasn't exactly brought in and put in much order as she was quickly moving to CA for grad school and had three weeks from the time she knew she had been accepted to having to be there.

This summer, Brian was told to get his stuff out of here..and no, you can't tell your parents to get rid of it. That's your responsibility.

Once his stuff was out of here, we started organizing Brenda's stuff and got it all in one room and behind closed doors. When she came home for Brian's wedding, she sorted the few things that got thrown into the garage when she left and got rid of most of it.

Now when she's home for Christmas, she has agreed to start sorting the junk that she has downstairs here. I am anticipating other things to be donated, and of course, some of it will stay for when she moves back when she's done with school.

I'm a collector (angels, birdhouses, giraffes), but I never planned on collecting my kids stuff. I do have boxes for them with things from their childhood that they will get to go through and decide what they want and what they want to pitch.

It feels wonderful to have taken control again of the basement and in the process, we donated tons of stuff to Salvation Army and Goodwill.

Then the Epilepsy Foundation sends cards out every once in a while with a date they will collect things. Gives us an excuse to go through the closets and get rid of things we are no longer wearing.

I agree that if the kids claim the things they have left behind it makes for a less cluttered house and life. I finally reclaimed my garage of this summer. Now I'm looking forward to reclaiming my attic and basement where various children have stored things over the years. I've offered to pay for the dumpster for them to toss things they haven't needed for several years and in some cases don't even remember are here. Text books anyone? An old water bed?

Being a 65 year old woman myself, I don't want my kids coming in to tell me I need to simplify my life by getting rid of things. Keep in mind I rent a space at one of those rental garage places for things I'm not ready to get rid of yet from my previous life as a wife and mother. But I'll do that when I'm ready to do it. And if I feel overwhelmed by it all, I hope I have the wisdom to ask for their help. But at this point, it's my stuff and I want to keep it.

On the other hand, I think some of my kids and grand kids have way too much "stuff", but I won't be telling any of them that. Works both ways I think.

Claiming Kids' stuff at my parents place is relatively easy. I was no longer a resident in my parent's place about two hours after I went to college. All my leftover stuff was herded into a couple pantry cabinets. Everything left that I could claim can fit into two bankers' boxes. Ditto for the brothers. Other than a closet with baby toys that are being used for the grandkids, there really isn't much to get rid of from our part.

Most of the clutter, sadly is my parents doing. Our "Kiddie Litter" doesn't really scrape the surface. My Dad still has the lumber from my college loft in the attic of the garage, even though it could have been used for kindling a thousand times over.

Once when I was about sixteen I cleaned out a closet FULL of junk. It was papers and drawings from us kids from kindergarten and such. In reality, only about one shelf of it was those "treasures" - the rest of it was dried out markers and empty binders of old spelling books that had all the sheets torn out. Half a barrel of crap and only 2-3 reams of legitimate stuff. Did I get a compliment for cleaning? Hell, no! I got yelled at.

The same thing happened when I dumped out a closet overflowing with used clothing and bedding, sorted out and folded all the useless clothing and stuck in in a huge box for charity. Did that when I was 14. Got reamed out for doing that as well. These people don't like surprises.

okay, the dumpster comment at the end of all this bumms me out.

thats the historian coming out of me, however, moreso because it doesnt sound like just 'junk' around the house but actual things that can be given away. Maybe 2 dumspters - one for trash and one for giveaways - right it off on taxes in the end. don't throw away $$.

a nice christmas gift may be your time. Wrap a big card up with a huge bow with tickets to a Saturday afternoon dinner and a show that will keep them away for a few hours. so you can set up the pegboard and clean up the new addition. Sounds like an all day project. Give your mom filecabinets for Christmas. They arn't cheap - specially the nice wood ones. Start looking now, not easy to find either.

On another note... they may like living that way so let um.

(my mom- I cringe, so I know, sucks)

I get that you will have to eventually care for them ...don't let it stress you now. and still buy mom a couple nice side by side wood file cabinets. or 3 or 4. They would look nice along a wall.

I bought mine some of those clear storage containers for Christmas one year - so you could see whats inside them!!! I didn't wrap them- plopped a bow on top.

good luck md.

I know the funeral comment seems crass, but we just went through this whole rigamaroll with the wife's parents a few years ago. Her dad was a depression-era kid that was the definition of a pack rat.

Her Mom died first, and hardly anything changed. When her father died, we literally filled a ten-yard dumpster with trash. It was definitely trash - not old keepsakes, or even 'used' stuff - just junk. He had a 5 qt ice cream bucket FULL of burned out light bulbs from old cars - some looked like those old cone shaped lights off those 50's Buicks - all burned out, all completely useless. He was a heavy smoker, too - so even bedding and clothing was stained beyond a recoverable amount.

my grandpa, on my moms side had stuff like that too...

he had a box full of caster wheels, like from office chairs....

and if you asked him why - "just because...you never know when you might need some"...

he also kept an ice-cream bucket full of used, rusty nails...

going back to work today to find several emails from my boss sent on Wednesday last week, asking for me to do several tasks that day!?!

Nov 1 he approved my PTO for the month.

Friday the 21st I reminded him - I'm on PTO Wednesday.

He was told Tuesday - See you Monday, Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Apparently after sending all these emails, came out to my desk and asked my co-worker, Have you seen Kat today?

I'm so glad that my boss listens to me when I tell him important information!

I thought I read it as something like they were cutting down their transmitter power for analog at first (testing the impacts?). Though I might have read the scrolling text wrong.

Regardless, you think it would be plastered all over Kare11's website, but a cursory look doesn't pull up any information on it.

Oh, all this DTV transition talk reminds me of something..

After doing some research on the subject, I found from a few reliable sources that there's a common myth floating around that broadcast stations are transmitting digital tv signals at lower power levels until the switch in February, when they'll start broadcasting at full strength.

That's unfortunately not true, most stations (if not all) are already broadcasting Digital tv at their maximum allowed transmission power. So, odds are if you're not getting good reception on digital currently, you probably won't get much, if any, better after the switch. I guess we can hope that shutting down the analog signal will reduce the noise on the VHF/UHF bands, but we really won't know what effect that will have until it's done.

A few stations across the US have filed with the FCC for licenses to boost their power for digital broadcasts, though none that I've heard of in the metro. We'll see how Kare11 fares after they shut their analog down.

If stations don't boost their power, there is going to be a major public outcry. Right now, we receive the digital from about 5 miles to the Shoreview towers. I can visually see about 75% of the tower. There is no reception below grade, in a basement. Analog works just fine there.

That being said, reception is just on the fringe here. Weak digital reception (stop action and no sound) is far more annoying than weak analog (a little snow). Ours will often 'crap' out completely.

I have heard that the range of digital is much less (less than 20 miles?), so when the transition takes place, I am assuming there will be many unhappy viewers. Heck, the digital signal might not even reach the KARE 11 studio!!!!!!

Yes, all we have is broadcast TV. All we watch are a few programs and the news, so why pay for cable? Or is the real goal to force people to subscribe to cable?

Our townhome association has rules that no one can have an antennae over 18 inches (basically a satellite dish) on the roof. - B.S.

I got the big 'ol aluminum standard antenna that's supposed to be good for up to 60 miles away. Doesn't work worth a damn in the attic, so I bolted it flat at the top apex of the roof angled slightly towards Shoreview.

We can't get Channel 41 or 45 unless the conditions are just right, and fog seems to break down even the standard station signals sometimes. We're probably only 15 miles or so from the towers as the crow flies. Digital signal is great (as long as it works).

However, my parents place is 60 miles away (between Shakopee and Mankato) and their reception on the DTV tuner box - even with a 20 year old TV - is darn near as good as ours. They've got their standard antenna on a 15 ft pole at the top of the roof (can you say 'lightning rod'?).

Wolf: At 5 miles away - aren't you under that 'umbrella effect' where you're too close to the towers and the direct signal over-shoots you and you get a bounce signal instead? I've got friends that literally live UNDER the towers and satellite TV is about all they can get there.

Geek Squad guy told me about that, but he said we should be far enough away. I am thinking about putting up a rooftop antennae. Right now I use amplified rabbit ears.

for less than $10 you can get cable from comcast basic 1, for a buck or two more add the box and remote if you wish...suppose to only get the local stations and the public access ones, but if you run with it directly into tv (cable ready) we get all the digital basic stations up to ch 99

we got cable years ago because the area we live historically has terrible reception even with monster antenas

They have a monopoly as the only cable provider in some areas and can charge more?

When we lived in FL, there were 2 cable companies. Kept prices low. Once your 1 year promo ended, all you needed to do was call them to cancel and they extended the offer for another 12 months. In the Tampa/St. Pete area, you needed cable. Only one broadcast station could be received.

Unfortunately, that is the reality of the situation.

Analog always has been more forgiving, most people could put up with some static, fuzz, snow or whatever from bad reception, as long as they could still make out what they're watching. Digital however either works remarkably well, or not at all.

I think a lot of stations after the switchover are going to find they have to broadcast at higher power to reach their target audiences, but I doubt many will be able to within the next year. Applying for a license is a big task, and costly, as is the cost of upgrading equipment.

Sadly, a lot of the burden is going to be on the consumer, though I guess since TV is still free... you get what you pay for. Although, it is in the stations best interests to reach the most amount of people...

There are now more discreet designs for outdoor antennas at lots of places. From my own experience, getting that antenna OUTSIDE makes a huge difference in signal strength.

I had that huge bird's nest of aluminum inside the living room next to the TV with TWO amplifiers on it - the reception still sucked. Now with the antenna outside, I get a decent signal without any amplifier.

I still use ONE in-line amplifier because it has to travel from the roof to the garage cable box and thru the house to the TV - an extra 50+ feet of cable. That little boost also helps with FM interference from fluorescent light fixtures.

BTW - if you got a bad buzzing fluorescent light, that will screw up your TV worse than any vacuum cleaner - and it doesn't matter where it is in the house.
