I would like to propose that we have our pity party at Yarusso's this year in addition to being one of the gathering spots prior to the paper routine each night.
Then moving forward, we should talk to them regarding the use of their establishment for the PDG next year. I agree that Yarusso's is larger and would be more comfortable than Obb's basement, but we need to remember they took us on at the last minute and have tried to make us feel welcome. Much more so than McGovern's ever did.
Best case, for Crew name recogition, would be one place and one place only. However, given a few years with a steady track record it shouldn't be too hard to establish specific venues for different get-to-gethers.
Attendance is usually fewer people and Sunday afternoon should not be as bad for people traffic there. Asking a restaurant to block out there prime Sat. eve. dining times for a party - no matter how big - is really asking a lot.
Having a RHB potluck is fun, but it won't take much arm-twisting for me to agree to a Russo's spaghetti buffet versus crockpot meatballs and lukewarm sliders (no offense).
I didn't even know that was legal. I love it!
Just caught up on the thread, but I never saw a definitive post of details. It sounds like the PDG is at Obb's this Saturday starting at 7pm. It also sounds like the place will be open until 3am though I suspect the permit still won't let them serve alcohol past 2am. Last year we had food and drink specials, but they were only good in the basement. Is that still the case? It sounds like Lilman will be there again with DJ equipment. If I could make a suggestion there, I would suggest not starting the music until 9 or 10pm so that people have some time to talk without having to shout over the music. The music will be more effective after the crowd clears a bit and people have had time to drink anyway.
Regarding the Rehash Bash, it's true we did sell our Mason lodge. We moved to the Masonic center on Plato Blvd. That place is also available to rent, though it would cost a bit more, like $100. However I'm pretty sure they do permit alcohol there. Then there's El Loro across the street and Joseph's Grill down a block for afterwards (no Superbowl conflict this year!) Otherwise, if we're going to keep the potluck, it probably would have to be a rec center or back out into the park. Personally I like rehashing. I'm not overly attached to a potluck. Without a potluck we'd also have the option of say meeting at the park at noon for some kind of programming, and then retiring to either a nearby bar/restaurant or going to a favorite for the socializing. The benefit to that is no rental fees, it brings the park back into the event, no cold food or tons of cleanup afterwards, but we'd still have enough time in a warm environment to truly rehash. There was a time when the food itself was an expression of our experience with the hunt, but I think we've evolved enough now to find lots of other ways to relive the experience.
And then just a thought in general about the group. It seems that rule by consensus doesn't always work very well. When a decision really needs to be made, it's really unclear who makes it or even when the decision has actually been made. Yet at the same time having a single person or even small group in charge won't necessarily work if what they decide is counter to general will of the rest of the group. What I would suggest, assuming anyone is willing to volunteer for the position, is that we have a person, or maybe two or three, who are official facilitators. Then when a question like the PDG comes up, people can know to shoot their suggestions over to that person specifically. Then at some point that person posts the options and gives people a set amount of time to post their feedback. That person is then responsible for interpreting the feedback and announcing what the decision is. In reality, this is almost exactly how things are done now anyway, but I think it would help eliminate confusion and misunderstandings if it were formalized.
I really wanted to respond about the lodge. I think we should rent it. We have had no problem getting donations in the past enough to cover the cost. That way we can keep the pot luck thing going.
I've got lots of them you know
Also, yes they gave some bread and sausage/pasta ONLY cause everyone purchased food.
I find the new Yarussos to be a cold environment. Not warm.
she has worked there for something like 15 years now.
Beautiful bar
now theres a room to rent for pre-dig!!!! OMG!
probably expensive drinks but very warm and welcoming.
I have never had them have a problem making a captain Coke or and jag bomb or a shot!?!? Guess its time I start to drink Goofy drinks to try and stump a bartender after doing it for a few years I know it can be a pain in the ASS!
this as opposed to the implicitly cold basement of obbs.
Or am I off on this?

I think if we want to remain an "open" group there should not be a requirement. It's a lot easier to get a place in a bar to have the PDG than it is to have a pot luck (and bring own food) somewhere. Most places won't allow food to be brought in. We have been renting the Mason lodge for the last few years now. The only thing different this year is the location and the price is a little more.
As far as becoming an official event...Well... we are not an "official" group. I'm not sure we want to be, IMO. Too much red tape. Besides, it seems to work out fine the way it is for the PDG. If it aint broke....why fix it.
With that said, I'm not totally against renting a place for the PDG. Just not really for it though...
I was thinking about it a bit today and maybe kat was on the right track. I'm going to use the Mermaid in Moundsview just as an example, I'm not actually proposing we go out to Moundsview. But I threw a couple of parties there for my singles club and what they do is let you use a space and then you just have to spend a minimum amount of money on food and drink. for the space we used the minimum was $1,000. Grumpy's in Roseville has a space also and their is $1,500. There are places in St. Paul that I'm sure operate the same way. The Crowne Plaza might be an option or maybe there are others where we could avoid the downtown parking.
So we maybe make it an official winter carnival event (though I don't think that would make attendees official winter carnival people any more than going to the Vulcan Victory Dance would). That would give us more opportunity to publicize it to treasure hunters beyond the forums. Maybe we could even talk the PP into revealing the first clue at the event.
Anyway, the event could start at like 6pm with a buffet dinner. Those that want to and can afford it do the buffet which will get you a long way towards your minimum. Everyone else can show up starting at 8pm for free and I'm sure the bar tab would easily cover the rest of the minimum (my last event had 200 people and the bar tab alone came out to $1200+). Such a space is likely to be bigger, we'd have our own bar, and possibly our own dance space. We wouldn't even have to worry about tipping (apparently McGovern's told a CC member we were bad tippers). A lot of times these places have a stage or other kind of central space from which we could do a program if we wanted. It could be pretty cool if we worked on it and I suspect it would also be more inviting to newcomers than the crowded bar environment.
