no, the downfall of that idea is that there's still a "cover charge" (call it what you want but as long as you gotta pay to get in the door its a cover charge regardless of what you get for it) until 9 or 10. not everyone wants to wait that long to show up. i'd imagine most don't.
If you don't eat the appetizers you at least know your $5 went to entertainment music or Mystical Muzik! THAT EASY!
or i can choose to not eat the appetizers and give my $5 directly to nicole and rich without subsidizing everyone else's drinking.
there was talk about wristbands but like registering a button, people with wristbands would give to non paying wristband people -
that's an ethics problem. the people who organized the arrangement need to deal with the people who are engaging in this behavior.
then who pays the difference of the $250 when it falls short?
the people who arranged it without talking to the rest of us first.
In theory only 50 people are needed to make the $250 so consider it a donation and anything (which there would be)
well if there's gonna be extra, your last question is a moot point.
Im broke but is $5 REALLY that big of a deal for everyone? my god.
hmmmm. $5 for appetizers versus $15 for a meal followed by $??? for drinks throughout the evening. somehow the math doesn't add up quite right for me. i don't think sacrificing a drink and a half is that big of a deal.
Every single person buys pop, drinks... $5 bucks = buying 1 drink
BIG DEAL. I go with 1 less drink.
what about the honor system?
you're the one who said the honor system wouldn't work, that people who bough wristbands would be giving to those who didn't
so youre covered
I would pay the whole $250 if I was working right now.
I'd lllove to just buy for everyone- it's like saying "drinks are on the house" from Cocktail.
Jesse? Jake? Mappy? BFG? CM?
furthermore, every single one of the things you mention is a choice. a choice, which incidentally, is made by the individual. here's a more important question for you, with regard to not getting enough "voluntary" contributions to cover things, what happens if people show up, are told they have to pay, and go find someplace else to party at and you don't raise enough money to cover the $250. you're in the exact same boat.
I was gonna call them to be sure they got it going.
I gotta go to work now...
Thanks for not calling too J... :frown:
the people who arranged it without talking to the rest of us first
It COULD only fall short if we did the honor system, not that it would. and with all the talk in here some people wouldnt pay out of spite -

There may not be extra going a different route, I was going for the guarantee

my point with that was that most people usually get an appetizer w their meal.
Thats okay though..... I'm sure the guys will let you know if that's just the way the deal went cause if I remember right... ANY of the Cooler could have gone to Obb's and made the deal ... Someone makes the deal and the decision (yes, they/we didn't post info on it sooner, I appologize for all who attended for that) - as we know from the past, most people disagree. If I remember right.
I'm just saying I'm willing to pay the $5 for a good deal. I search out good deals. period.
I didn't make the deal with Obb's. thats why I asked the guys to chime in.
Back in September/October I tried to address all of these same issues (location, space, noise, food, cover charge, making it an WC event etc...) and was told this -
The Crew wants to remain on their own and not mix with Winter Carnival. They don't want to have any type of fee or people will not show up. And as for space/location - no one else seem to have heard of any problems. So I bowed out.
Now here we are 5 days out and all of these topics are being discussed to death. As an event planner here is what I suggest you do in order to stop the running conversations and confusion:
Send out one message with the following information from ONE PERSON who will be the main contact if addition questions:
Pre-Dig is at Obbs - so do what you can to help with space issue downstairs and let people know it's being addressed.
Let them know there will be a donation asked for a food collection if the cost is not met then the people involved with that agreement need to be willing to pay the difference. If they are not - then DON'T do the food option.
Address the issue of it being too loud to talk - Just let Rich know (or whoever) to turn it down a couple of notches. And let people know what they can expect from the staff at Obbs (no food service downstairs only a bartender, drinks specials if any only downstairs, what does extended hours mean - hence will drinking need to stop at 2am although the place is open to 3 etc...)
Lastly -
Have a short survey ON PAPER at the pre-dig regarding what people want for the future (location, cost, atmosphere etc..) that can be completed that night... Don't do it on-line as there are many who aren't on here to respond.
My two cents.
thanks for throwing me under the bus everyone who has not chimed in... I get yelled at and I didn't make the decision, I was only there and telling what I heard and what I think should be. thats all
thanks.
Who was at the meeting with Jimmy?
If someone is really, really struggling and cannot come up with five dollars, I am sure you could PM any one of the crew and they would be more than happy to spring for your portion.I am one of those people, I would be happy to help a couple of people out.
If it's based on principal, then maybe those that have issue should assist with the arrangements next year and stop making those that did step up and take time out to set things up feel badly.
This is making my stomach hurt.
its not spite. its about choosing how we spend our money. like i said earlier, for me, that choice doesn't involve appetizers that have been sitting in warmers for hours after the kitchen closes.
If I remember right, THE COOLER told these guys to go and make the deal with Jimmy.
the cooler told these guys to get the room. in doing that, its kind of implicit that any major problems or differences from past practices need to come back to the group before a decision is made. i'm still trying to find the post that said to make a deal for food that everyone would have to pay for in order to get in? in fact, i'm still trying to find the post where paying to get in to cover appetizers is mentioned. i'm not holding my breath on finding it. because quite frankly, the people who made the deal haven't been forthcoming or truthful about all the details of it. do we honestly expect people to show up and not be pissed off on saturday night when there's a $5 charge to get in that they didn't know about? because the only people who did know about it were the ones who made the deal and didn't share it with *anyone* so that the information could be disseminated? good luck finding that post, j, because it doesn't exist. none of them do. and *that* is what has people pissed off in here. making a mandatory deal for food was *beyond* what anyone was told to do.
I'm sure the guys will let you know if that's just the way the deal went cause if I remember right
i'm not holding my breath on that, because despite having numerous opportunities to do so, no one's made any mention of it. as ian said 150 or so posts ago, cm posted that the room was taken care of 25 (now 26) days ago. if this was part of that deal, it should have been mentioned then. while it might not have been appealing to everyone involved, they wouldn't be pissed because it was dropped on the group at the last minute. and yes, 6 days in advance for something like this is the last minute.
ya know this event is publicized with an open invite to everyone, through the cooler crew site, through aw's yahoo group, through facebook, and who knows where else. beyond that, people know about it and have known about it for the last 10 years (not counting 1999 there because it was brand new) and it has always been free. that's how its billed, and its a little late to be changing that on the recipients of that open invitation.
I'm just saying I'm willing to pay the $5 for a good deal. I search out good deals. period.
i'm willing to not pay the $5 for the good deal so that i can spend it on what i want. while most people may order an app with their meal not everyone does, and i'd rather have the choice where i spend my $$.
Mission Accomplished!
rumors will appear. rumors will be discussed. especially when the rumor has some amount of merit to it, as this one did. not much merit, but some.
When a rumor springs up, the people who have direct knowledge about the situation need to clearly confirm or deny it. if that had happened here, this discussion wouldn't have happened and we'd have all gone on our merry way.
just *my* $0.02.
What would you like to do? Jimmy's offer
I thought it was iceman who said something, but i couldn't find a post. i know he mentioned it the other night at the wake. at least you know she threw herself undedr the bus, cm
sorry, j. i couldn't resist
It's okay.
Just get it right next time, dammit!
