also found a combo to a safe. I remember seeing one in the house when I was a child. I think in the bottom of a closet. I need to find it. It was my dads.
I'll pass on the kitch washing of the money. It's clean money - it's just out of circulation.
I opened a closet in one of the bedrooms/den and there was a safe sitting there!!! ummm, duh!!!! hide it when people are looking at your house- they may come back to rob you!!!! I quickly shut the door - didn't want to look suspect. Im suprised the agent allowed me to take pictures of the rooms too.
I'm gonna have to find one. I should. I also found all my grans original marraige certificates, my dads, several death certificates, my dads divorce papers, a dear john letter - yada yada yada. I would like to put them all somewhere safe.
Don't you have power of attorney or executor status or something? Just take it to the bank and deposit it. If they ask where you got it, and they may not, tell them the truth. It's still legal tender and legally its yours to do with as you see fit.
Isn't it fun going through old treasures such as what you are finding at your grandma's??
My mother had each of us kids take turns choosing items that were to be ours when the time came that both my parents were gone.
The others were gobbling up the TVs and furniture, while I was more interested in the chipmunk salt and pepper shaker set (my first choice) and my grandma's beautiful pine cedar chest.
When the sad day came for us to retrieve our chosen items, I opened my grandma's cedar chest and realized it was full of things!
I asked if they wanted to divide up the stuff inside, and they said, no way! You picked the cedar chest - you have to take the contents too.
The treasures inside are just awesome. My grandma's wedding gown (1909), letters and telegrams - some important, some sad - love letters, cherished gifts, baby items. My grandparents wedding certificate - in color - and in Swedish. So many items someone cherished enough to safekeep. At least four generations contributed to the stash.
Enjoy your treasure hunt at your grandma's! And keep letting us know what you find.
California doesn't have an estate tax. And Federal only taxes if it's $1,500,000 or more.
Inheritance and estate taxes
California has no inheritance tax and its estate tax is being phased out in connection with federal estate tax law changes related to federal estate tax collection. Executors of estates of persons who died on or after Jan. 1, 2005, are no longer required to file a California estate tax return.
Is bank stock worth anything anymore? My mother was given some stock in a bank my grandfather owned way back when and I found the certificates in a drawer a while back.
I don't want to call the bank and look like a fool for asking.
I found 2 40k bonds that I need to see if they have been cashed. besides the safe combo (still need safe) and the 10k in cash (sofar) under the carpet.
I found an old 22 pistol that is in the original holster (and yes, I checked - it's not loaded)
I also found her wedding ring from 1930, and my dads - I'm sure there is tons more stuff as she was a 'tucker awayer'
I'm not afraid to put the money in the bank - persay, but I am afraid that I will just blow it on something stupid that way. Some how having it in old cash, is going to make me save it longer.
I think she would have wanted me to spend it on something special - not just paying off bills or something. So I have to come up with something really good.
Good to know there isn't an inheritance tax here. that helps.
No kidding. I've been an heir four times, and I've never paid a dime in inheritance tax. As far as I can remember, I don't think I ever even claimed it as income.
Is there a line for that on the tax form? I didn't see one.
vino before you do anything with that cash let me get a hold of my cousin who helps alot of people with old money he has a business doing it I will callin a favor and get you his number! so you can find out its true value! he has a dollar coin that is from way back that looks like junk but it is really worth like 10grand or something crazy like that! I dont think thats the exact price! but you get my point! and if you take it to a bank depends on what you mean? they can make you turn it in for face value! and that could mean whatever dollar for dollar! and that would just suck!!!!!!!!! so give me a call on friday and I will have my mom put in the call!!!!!!!!!
that gose for everyone here to I had a indian dime from I want to say like 1920 or something like that he got me 500bucks for it I found it working at his sisters DQ yes my family has owned to many places to name here!! they all have flipping money but none in my zone?? and cant give me a loan!!what the hell!!!!!!!!!
the thing of it is they maybe a miss print bill or something crazy that you just never know about!!!!! didnt know how old! just didnt want you to get screwed on IT!!!!!
There are many stories at Caring Bridge. Some miraculous, others terribly sad.
But what I have found is how strong people are in the face of some terrible happenings in their lives.
There is a family who had two children together and she had an older child from a previous relationship, The two younger children were found to have Alper's. It's a rare genetic disease. The children have now since passed on. Such terrible sadness for that family to have to bury two children.
But in the face of all that, they have set up a foundation in memory of those children to help other families dealing with the same disease. They also raise funds for books and toys for the pediatric unit at Children's.
Turned out he had done that to himself. I know he got some treatment. I haven't had contact with his mother lately so I'm not sure how he's currently doing.
and I'll give you 50% back...nice and clean

yeah, I know it's still good but walking into somewhere and buying something with a huge amount of cash in old bills - just seems kinda well, suspect.
I looked at a house yesterday for sale

looking at a house forsale? a house for moi?
heh.
safety deposit box
Suppose I should look into one.
if you deposit the money in the bank you are going to draw mega attention to yourself.
so you have 2 options....sockdrawer it....or put the funds in a safety deposit box.
or your 3rd option is go to vegas and blow it as fast as you got it.
I just know how the IRS loves to screw people...
We experienced that some years back when going through my great, great aunt's things.
