Thanks. It was kind of hostile when the valid goal was canceled by an early whistle. Booooooo.

Almost as bad as the one not too long ago that was a valid goal and was canceled by a late whistle that was "intended" to be earlier?

I was going to head out tonight but feeling a bit under the weather. I think I'll read the clue from home tonight and have at least one day of work where I'm not totally worn out.

I wonder how big the line is tonight at the pp?

Depends on how many people are at Wild Thymes!

Clue #2

Tramping hill and dell, you may hear tell

About the contests waged of yore

Much of the history remains a mystery

Which we hope to bring to the fore

GreenTeam

Hope you feel better soon!

So what hilly park corresponds with a history that is a mystery?
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 8:57 PM Permalink
OT

Well then.

Inasuitcase

Is this the clue? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me and I'm not familiar with the poster. GreenTeam?
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 8:58 PM Permalink
GreenTeam

Oh...contest=medallion hunt. They are going to tell us about the history of the hunt.
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 8:59 PM Permalink
wolfpac

Thanks Dharma
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 8:59 PM Permalink
GreenTeam

I don't see it online yet. But it makes sense if you think about the "contest" being the hunt.
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:00 PM Permalink
Inasuitcase

True and there does seem to be a lot of history about the hunt in the paper. I'm not home, yet, as I'm a flight attendant and on the road until Wednesday.

had someone at the pp call me with it - i'm sure it's correct. although caps and punctuation could be wrong

hill and dell.... "high" "land"?

Not really fitting the definition of 'dell' properly but it just jumped out at me...
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:03 PM Permalink
GreenTeam

Oh, that's why you are "inasuitcase," LOL! I bet we'll have to know or learn a lot about the history of the hunt.

fore - nearby golf course... Phalen/Keller.... CoNo... etc.?
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:05 PM Permalink
OT

Isn't the phrase usually "over hill and dale"?
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:06 PM Permalink
dharma lakreg

"fore" could = a park with a golf course
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:06 PM Permalink
GreenTeam

That's a good noodle, fore=golf.

dell is a woodsy area

While walking through hills and dells, you may hear

of the fighting/war/conflicts of before.

It's a mystery (Hidden)

Which we'll to make clear to you

sorry, usually brainstorming in person
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:09 PM Permalink
GreenTeam

I think it can be said either way.
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:10 PM Permalink

Howdy! I was just thinking about you guys the other day.

You sent the best Jerky  mmmmm...

Fighting/war/conflicts could = medallion hunt.
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:11 PM Permalink
zephyrus

I agree... I am not narrowed down as of now, but I do recall saying it was too early when I was in Iraq - Bing Crosby in clue 2? Come on!
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:12 PM Permalink
GreenTeam

Awww...That's so nice! Glad you liked the jerky! We got it at a little butcher shop on hwy 61 north of 36.

zephyrus

could

Which may put you over toward Harriet Island, the site of many WC activities in the years past. Or CoNo...

I guess the best thing is to figure out what do they want to tell us...

Battle Creek also jumps to mind. But that might be too obvious.

A contest doesn't have to be a war or a conflict. Could be just that, a contest of some sort. A fishing contest. Lots of tall tales there. There used to be an ice fishing contest on White Bear Lake. I think nimrod will like this clue.
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:16 PM Permalink
brasscat

maybe a park with disk golf

but not golf club golf
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:17 PM Permalink
zephyrus

I love it

Tall tales - fishing

Great noodle OT!
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:21 PM Permalink
zephyrus

Oh no...

Cuz you have golf (both kinds), Fishing and Hills and Dells....

If they mention amphibians this will be a long hunt...

or we could get locky and they could mention Palin.... would be fitting with these ideas as well.

Leelabell is gonna come on here and have the clue solved so easily - I know it.
Sun, 01/18/2009 - 9:22 PM Permalink
brasscat

any contest that is for a good cause that you collect money for

like the runs, walks for cancer, MS ect.

zephyrus

Was just thinking... isn't Dell like a Hollow?

How could this fit... Heck of a hill by Swede Hollow isn't there? Down from where the Hamm House was? Think, think, think...

dell - a small wooded hollow

I just need to use the right dictionary...

Hollow - a small valley between the mountains

hmmm....

zephyrus

thanks

nice find

We'll be up front: We devote the hunt

To Box, our friend, now at rest...

Don was an eastsider..... Phalen is on the east side

leelabell

Thanks Zephy, but you are giving me too much credit.

I'll say that the very first thing that came to mind were historic contests like jousting or other things one might find at the renaissance fest. But, I haven't thought much about how those sorts of contests would relate to the winter carnival. I'll get back to you if I come up with something.

Swede Hollow is like the gateway to the east side... I also found interesting in that link the bottom part about a "boxcar" being used as a chapel in the 20's... hmmm
