1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

King Boreas aka Ian

Lillian, the best advice is NOT to announce you've found it. Walk away.

Yeah, but that can be difficult when you think about it, Ian. When high emotional people find that thing, they will be going crazy from instinct. Yelling and jumping, "I GOT IT! IT'S MINE! YESSS!!! HOOOO!" right?

I'm sure it would be...no doubt about it. I have found that most people are courteous, tho.

Does anyone here know what Woodduck said that got everyone so worked up? From recent comments it sounds like he said something and claimed it was inside info but the original message has been since deleted.

SETTLE DOWN PEOPLE, THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT , TO BAFFLE YOUR MIND. AS FOR THE NUMBERS, MAYBE THESE HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WHERE (PLACE) BUT MORE THE SURROUNDINGS OF THE MEDALLION. DON'T LOSE YOUR HEADS.

What is it about Phalen that people like? Is it the fact that there is a golf course there and it hasn't been there for a long time? What else?

Is Highland bordered by Hwys. 94 and 5?

snow angle-Woodduck said that a boy stumbled upon the medallion today and he got 10k but the pioneer press is putting up another 10k because its too early in the hunt. He said he got his info from a reliable source at the pioneer press.

Has the Medallion ever been found in the same park two years in a row? I'm guessing the committee looks for geographic diversity in selecting a sight. I can't seem to remember the last one at Phalen or Highland, but I doubt it would be at Como again.

Hello everyone-- why not think smaller parks?? there is a park off of Rice stree(co. rd.49), next to the golf dome, close to the police station, intersects with PARK street, and a lot of the houses have 5's in there street numbers........... what do you think?????

I think they would consider duplicating the site because it is the opposite of what anyone thinks .... Unconventional, but why not?

Lilian- (Just a clairification)

Highland northern boarder is Randolph. It dosen't extend all the way top 94. The area between is Macalaster/Groveland.

Not saying Highland is wrong, just a clairification:)

One therory on big park's is because of the Big draw for the Bigger cash this year. Some think with more money, more people will go out to look for it, and would need a bigger park.

Good luck!

A Theory

Clue #1 - Just the standard fare, but since this year the expectation was/is that many new hunters would be out. The PP just wanted to make sure no one dug up any golf courses.

Clue #2 - Refers us to a park with good sledding hills, but not Como because that is where all the action is.

Clue # 3 - "Numbers keep score and adorn the front door" - refers to sports score keeping and addressing on buildings. "A nine and a five and somewhere a four" - may refer to e.g. 9 Hole golf course, 5 baseball/softball diamonds, 4 tennis courts or basketball courts (located in a different part of the park.

Today's clue will probably tell us more about what it is hidden in. Or maybe not.

At this point I think (especially last night's posts) were wasteful and unorganized. If on this board we are going to determine where the medallion is located the posts should relate to that cause!

Good luck fellow hunters.

Highland is bordered by Highland Pky. on North,a combo of Edgcumbe Rd.,Hamline Ave., and &th ST. on the East, Snelling on the West, and Edgcumbe Ave. again on the South.

Has anyone been out to the suspected sites yet?

Highland Park is as good a place as any.

The first medallion was hidden there.

There are no other carnival events there, that I know of.

The 9 and 5 and somewhere a four line may work for Hwy 5 & I-94.

There are some very good sledding hills there.

Someone suggested a "French" relationship in clue #2 for the word "nil". The main road through Highland is Montreal.

"Numbers keep score and adorn the front door" seem to relate to one object or place, i.e. an Ice Arena or sports stadium.

Out last nite to various parks: Highland (close to home and work) Phalen, Como. Always look at the big ones just to see.

Its gotta be one of the big ones, I don't believe it's a smaller one.

Interstate 494 runs right into Hy. 5 on the south boarder of Highland Park.

Clue #1 - Stay away from Golf Courses, that's it Clue #2 - Near an Attraction, possibly the snow slide at Como? But don't get too close. Clue #3 - It's got to be an address of some sort.

I think we have to pull just one thing from each clue and concentrate on that.

BRAINSTORM!!!!!

The third clue traditionally reveals what the medallion will be hidden in.

Flow me here: KSTP radio is a sponsor of this years Winter Carnival. KSTP's number is 95. (9 and 5) On a digital read it is 94.5. (Sometimes a 4?) The medallion is hidden in a KSTP item. (Bag, Bumpersticker, etc.)

What do you guys think?

Hello fellow medallion searchers! What about the third clue? Does anyone think this could be pointing to the address of a sports arena of some sort? Numbers keep score and adorn the front door? Maybe its the address of a hockey arena with the numbers 4, 5 and 9 in it. It seems kind of obvious but who knows? There is a hockey arena at Phalen and near Highland. Anyone checked out those addresses?

PS - how come I see the same goofy picture for so many people on my screen? Is this a default picture?
