1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

Hello?!

I used to write Web pages in raw HTML back in college(YUCK!), I just have to remember all of the little quirks

Try calling around. It'll save you time. SA's, Tom Thumb, Snyders, Wallgreens etc. I'm guessing, but would suspect someone has them

I am new to the water cooler. I've been studying clues for YEARS and searching also.

It's been five years since it's been in Highland park and that's about right in where they put it from year to year. Battle Creek is in Maplewood right? So it won't be there. It was just at como in 1997 so it won't be there. What does that leave? Harriet island, highland park, phalen, newell, mounds mark, ....

ok, one more post. Researched when what the medallion is in was revealed.

1998, Old Navy baby sock, clue 7

1997, Curad bandaid box wrapped in red bandanna, clue 2

1996, Skoal chewing tobacco tin, clue 2

1995 Yarn pouch, clue 1 (highly unusual)

1994 White wooden box, clue 3

1993 Baby diaper, clue 3

1992 White mitten, clue 2

1991 Hostess Snowball, clue 2

1990 Clay and grass, clue 4

Average = clue 2.8 (last year's skewed the average)

I'm guessing the 9-5-4 thing & the word "shout" in clue 3, or the word "nil" in clue 2 (meaning it's not inside of anything this year, but just naked in the snow) might be keys to what it's in (or NOT in)

tamolleson - Battle Creek is still in St. Paul proper, just on the border of Mplwd.

Wampa - I'm at the main campus, Bldg 260

Hmmm. I'd think they'd mention it in one of the early clues if the 150 years was relevant. *shrug*

yo yo yo, meanah here again. MOUNDS PARK IS THE SPOT, IM TELLING YOUS

Wed, 01/27/1999 - 10:19 AM Permalink

Mounds Park will never be the spot again. There was way too much trouble casue by the last and only time it was in mounds. There are too many idiots who walk on the mounds and dig the mounds up. PP doesnt want that kind of destruction I can guarantee it. It is one thing for some people to destroy a park in the process it is another thing when people start digging on graves. too much bad press to go with it.

Hi everyone. This is my first post for the 1999 hunt. I was a cooler crew poster last year. My idea is PHALEN.

There is an old green and white shed ("past" from clue 4) which used to be the pump house for the waterfall ("blast" clue 4). The shed is located across the street from the 9 hole. There is a baseball field with the #5 on it. 4 could be 4 players golfing or the word "four".

What do you think?

Sue Bee,

Are you a big stats person by trade? You are definantly ontop of the trends!

Good thoughts jake but I think we still have tonights clue to go before we can specify a park and pull the clues apart more.

Does anyone think that they would actually make it that easy to pinpoint the park 'NEWELL'? Could it mean it is near there,(Highland)?

Also, what about the 9,5 and somewhere a 4? I think the key to this clue is the phrase 'adorn the front door' Could it be the 9 hole golfcourse, highway 5 and the 4 referencing the golf course? Or could it be the address 954 Wheelock pky, at the entrance of Phalen (referencing the phrase 'adorn the front door') Any ideas on these? Plus what about in clue 4, about 'iconoclast' meaning 'attacker of cherished beliefs' and referencing 'the new'? Any ideas about this?

007 I picked up 5 buttons at the SA on Lexington just north of 94 early Saturday morning. What? (5 - 9 - 4) ? The medallion must be at my house. Good job CC. This makes work way more interesting.

Hey gang - was at Highland last night when the clue came out (muddled it over, dug awhile longer and went home).....

Serious Hunter - is there really a 954 wheelock address at Phalen????

SueBee - hope all is well, good to see you posting!

I believe that the 'well in the new' is a red herring for several reasons: a) WAY too early to give the name of the park that obviously (past years, its been clues 8-10 thats served that role), b) This will be the biggest hunt of all time - why give the explicit name of a small park on clue 4 if you want the hunt to make it past clue 6 at least????

Any other opinions to match my humble one???

SERIOUS HUNTER

Are you sure about the address 954 wheelock pky at the entrance to Phalen? Did you see it? Is it on the columns?

Go against tradition--It's gonna be something crazy this year.

"A nine and a five and somewhere a four" indicates to me that you would not find the 4 directly with the 9 or 5. Indirectly, maybe, but not directly. But if Phalen has a post with the address 954, thats pretty tough to ignore.

Iconoclasts rebel against given truths, the fact that the clue gives us NEWELL this early is a blaten (sp) attempt to ditch some of the newbies at NEWELL, while more experienced hunters go for HIGHLAND.

Hollywood - I agree that it's a bit early to give away Newell that easily, but it's still hard to ignore how they phrased that clue.

Wampa - I'm not a stats person, but Greg Sax put together an awesome web page dedicated to the Cooler Crew. at www.coolercrew.com. It has all the clues and explanations from past years etc. It made it really easy to compile the park and container lists I posted this morning.
