1999 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt

Submitted by Casey Trauer on

It's time for the Medallion Hunt! The first clue will appear on PioneerPlanet just after midnight Saturday, Jan. 22. Come back here to compare notes with other treasure seekers, but be certain you read the rules on the Planet's Winter Carnival page.

...just returned from Newell, Highland, and Como...

The park is highland because its located off of Ford Parkway.

Henry Ford was your iconoclast and yes there was old Fords

off great value as well as the new Ford cars and trucks of today.

One more thing, if Henry Ford's Model T came out in 1952, well

get this, the medallion hunt started in 1952!

Here's the story: Yesterday afternoon a St. Paul man ended early what was thought to be a lengthy hunt for the St. Paul Winter Carnival Medallion. Since K G had purchased and registered the winter carnival button and is now entitled to the $10,000 prize. He has a verbal agreement to split the lump sum with G K, also of St. Paul. Congratulations K G.

Folks, I've never found the damn thing, but I've walked over it 3 of the past 5 years. I began 'seriously' hunting in the middle of the 1992 hunt.

I never make BOLD statements, but I believe this to be true:

It ain't Newell

If there is barely enough parking at 12:30 on a Wednesday afternoon, clue 4, how can the park handle the 100's who will be 'in the search' ?????

The military vehicles at Como are there because the Army Engineers are building the snow slide.

certain spot at newell in NE corner, big hill going up toward wood like area. Believe me gowing up at newell and being there every day it is a thrill to go down on sled or bike, and people are attracted to it. since it is off in a corner it is easy to stay away from it.

why

This year it's at HIGHLAND PARK, becaue of Ford Parkway. There is great value in old Fords just like the new Fords of today.

I'm planting my shovel at Mears Park! But seriously folks, these clues are the most intriguing I've seen in years. They seem to tell so much but offer just the right spice of mixed messages. I've heard lots of good theories about the numbers, but nothing solid yet about an address, which I believe is key to the "adorn the front door" clue.

With ya John, had that figured out, but acted confused on here so more people go to newell, and less to HP

dude, the model T came out in like 1902, not 52!!!

Highland seems like the best bet. Maybe Como.

Nelson, I thought the Model T was introduced earlier in the century than the 50s. I also wonder about the idea of it being at a smaller park. This contest has grown, and with the creation of this cooler crew chat, there are a lot more ideas being passed around. A smaller park would get blitzed because of this rise in popularity and ability to see all these ideas so easily. It seems early to be naming a smaller park so soon...

If it is possibly Como or HP, how does last night's clue fit in?

Wed, 01/27/1999 - 1:51 PM Permalink
MJ

ICONOCLAST = SEVERE CRITIC, CRITIC, FANATIC, DISSENTER, RADICAL, REBEL, RENEGADE, HEATHEN, NONCONFORMIST, INDIVIDUALIST.

No where have I found that it relates to anything regarding religion, or religious items.

Wed, 01/27/1999 - 1:53 PM Permalink
Ms. Milwaukee

At HP the value is in the neww water towers not the old visible from the whole park, and Henry Ford was an iconoclast.

Wed, 01/27/1999 - 1:53 PM Permalink
The Geo Kid

If it's at Como last night's clue fits in with iconoclast. Go against popular belief that it won't be a Como, based on it was there two years ago.

Does anyone think that it is on the State Capitol Grounds. The slide was there last year (flying downhill) The capitol used to be at 954 University Ave and can anyone think of our most famous iconoclast right now. Maybe Jesse "the medallion" Ventura?

Wed, 01/27/1999 - 1:55 PM Permalink
ThoseMedallingKids

Regal, how do you get value as being the water towers? And saying that Ford was an iconoclast is a bit of a stretch in my mind...

Wed, 01/27/1999 - 1:55 PM Permalink
The Geo Kid

Iconoclast does have to do with religious beliefs. According to my Webster it is in reference to 8th and 9th century Orthodox beliefs against the use of icons.

good question!!!! (those medalling kids)...i have to work during the day but my friend is out looking while i am keeping track of clues... and she just came back from highland she said that their is a few people out there but they are not digging...she went to newell and tons of people there.. someone also mentioned not enough parking...cherokee had no parking only along streets....that has got nothing to do with it...it cant be at phalen because it is closed past 11:00 AND I DONT THINK COMO EITHER BECAUSE THERE WAS COPS THERE BY THE ARMY TRUCKS AND DID NOT WANT ANYONE ON THE GROUNDS BECAUSE YOU COULD SEE NEW CONSTRUCTION WITH THE PAVILLIONS AND ALL.....

I heard that there was only going to be 11 clues this year, is this true and why?

MJ....i found iconoclast in my dictionary to have something to do with religoun..... iconoclast: one who attacks conventional or cherished beliefs and institutions as being false or harmful. one who seeks to destroy or oppose the use of images used in religious worship, esespecially one who formally opposed the use of images in teh Christian church

If its at Newell, I wouldn't be surprised if it was found in the next day or two, with how small it reportedly is. I saw Cherokee last year and the place was a wasteland. Newell I bet is smaller...

Hey Peter does a park have to be a play area? no. Fom highland Pkwy to edgcumbe, and from 7th (5) and Snelling everything given so far is boundaries for it and things in the park

Wed, 01/27/1999 - 2:04 PM Permalink
pamtollefson

MJ--You must be looking at a thesaurus. In webster's dictionary it does say one who destroys religious images or opposes their veneration or one who attacks established beliefs or institutions.

why does everyone think 954 has to do with the park. Past clues indicate that the first few clues suggest what the medallion is actually hiddin in.

Someone mentioned the Capitol area. There is a statute of Columbus on the grounds. Was he iconoclastic?

regalman- the only area in the park where you can see the hill is where the water towers are. near the hockey rink.

Is there 11 or 12 clues this year?

Wed, 01/27/1999 - 2:07 PM Permalink
ThoseMedallingKids

Pam, I've seen a few definitions of iconoclast referring to religion, and I think the origin has to do with going against religious icons/idols. You're right in that the past early clues told what it was in, but last year we didn't learn it until clue 7. There is no real formula for the clues unfortunately. Hard to tell if its telling us location or what its in....
