not here they can't. If they don't pay, they can't read here. Kitch set it up that way. Other folders (out side the cooler) they can read, but not this one.

pay to post or pay to SEE?? or both?

OTiS

We just ran into the problem of registered members who were not paid up being able to read the threads. They couldn't post but they could see everything.

We had Tim fix that issue for us.
Sat, 01/14/2006 - 1:21 PM Permalink
Terry

Pay to post. The pay to see is up to individual folder owners.

FWIW

Ken Merlin, merkong on geocaching.com, and I don't know what on PP or PF forums, just e-mailed me about some travel bugs of mine.

My point is that he doesn't post here, probably doesn't know about it. He was at the pre-dig last year, and just ASSUMES that it's at McGovern's

I think that any possible change for the future needs to be determined this week.

at least this year the snow will be gone before the hunt starts.

Wicked Nick

That might not be a good thing....

cause it would suck to have to use the excuse "I cant go medallion hunting....I've gotta go cut the grass"

Terry

OMG! Inks just said that today! LOL!!!!!!

Wicked Nick

hahaha....

I was just thinking that when I came home just now...

theres a buncha spots in our front yard, where you can see grass or leaves that didnt get raked up peeking outta the snow....

ugh...

thats one of the things I like about snow....

less yard work.

if i had to say that, i'd be investing in a trailer hitch for the van, a trailer on which to load the lawn mower, and a rear-bagger. and then i'd put the old beaten up blades from the last couple of years on the thing so as not to damage my prize too badly.

So what is it? Will these threads remain invisible to unpaid visitors?

Map Guy

JT - I want to talk to you about....carpooling to work.
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 11:25 AM Permalink
Terry

Hey Map Guy!

Yup. They are able to see ClueMasters Welcome Home thread that gives them the information they need to pay and then post here.
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 11:26 AM Permalink
Map Guy

Hiya TV!

If they pay - then at least they're investing. This makes us more like a semi-private club.

One of us better find the damn thing!
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 11:29 AM Permalink
Terry

And because everyone has to pay to post here - no invitational thread.

And we hope it keeps the riff raff down.

I count about 50 people in last year's cooler crew group photos. We should bet on the turnout for this year's photo.

75?
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 11:31 AM Permalink
Terry

That would mean actually having to count everyone! Egads!
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 11:32 AM Permalink
Terry

Are we talking the whole evening or just those around when the photo is taken?
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 11:33 AM Permalink
Map Guy

We should make sure the photo moment is established before the event so we can count on the biggest group.

THX 1138

I bus it to work.
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 11:39 AM Permalink
Terry

If we're just talking photo time, and knowing that some come early and leave - others come later for just a bit - and some stay all evening...I will say 85.
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 11:40 AM Permalink
Map Guy

We should just set a time, like 10:30.

I hit a bunch of parks today while geocaching. Arlington-Arkwright, Swede Hollow, Bruce Vento, Highland, Kellogg - tried Battle Creek at the end but it was getting too dark.

I don't know when they're hiding the medallion but the parks are ICY, all of the snow is packed down.
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 5:38 PM Permalink
Terry

I figured that might be the case. The thawing and refreezing will make this one interesting hunt...unless it's all gone by then.

I was at BC today too. I've not spent much time there in the past and didn't realize just how vast and uncharted it is.

I'm not up on my winter carnival history. Does anyone know if the dates have always been around the same time?

I'm just wondering because this stupid weather sucks and is not very winterish, making the winter carnival not very carnivaly.

I wish they would push it back a few weeks/a month.
Sun, 01/15/2006 - 10:15 PM Permalink
Wicked Nick

Yeah...

It hasnt been a carnival-like atmosphere, since those dudes with the face-paint took off

I blame it on global warming...

Love4Vino

it's all Kitch's fault - I will second that.

one year the medallion was found on valentines day (information via jake)

don't worry- it always snows within 48 hours of a hunt
Mon, 01/16/2006 - 6:47 AM Permalink
me2

ian, you could be funny and make the medallion a 'lost' travel bug.... big reward if found ...last seen in Crosby Park
Mon, 01/16/2006 - 6:48 AM Permalink

I bet this new medallion is clear as ice- no blue tint -

The Winter Carnival has always been towards the end of January from my recollections. The hunt used to coincide directly with the beginning date of the "official" start of the WC. That was back when there were two papers (and two clues) each day.

There would be one clue on the first day - Sunday - and two each day for the next week (13 clues). At one point, the Saturday paper went to one paper for the day and then there was one less clue making a total of 12 clues.

Interesting note: 1984, when there was so very much snow, there was a 13th clue published in some early editions of the Sunday paper, but the medallion had been found by the time that paper hit the streets. That hunt was the first Newell one.

yup- the year Kirk Kondie found it on the broken record thats up for sale on ebay

-my first hunt
Mon, 01/16/2006 - 7:18 AM Permalink
Terry

I think that broken record was the first and only time I've figured out what the clues were saying about what it was attached to. Not that it mattered with all that snow.

Remember the tunnel dug in the snow around the ice rink? That was awesome.

We had been out there earlier on Friday evening with friends of ours. It got too late for the kids so we took them home and the guys went down to get the next clue. They spent some time digging up where the path was - but once they gave that up, they went over and sat down in the snow to rest up, regroup, and think about where to dig next.

The snow they sat on was on top of the medallion attached to the broken record.
