2011 Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt

Submitted by ares on

If you're not planning to be at the Rehash Bash, you can still register by sending me the money via Paypal to this email address or send me an email and I'll give you an address to send the check to.

I expect we'll get a big turnout this year so there should be some good competition.

Clue #1

It seems the PP had trouble you see
With many cries of things that went afoul
Were attacks baseless? You might think tasteless,
Some considered throwing in the towel.

With a hunt cut short plans had to abort
The poor kiddies just did not understand
But no need to fear, a new hunt is here
The Mock Hunt by Allison Wonderland

Let's be obvious, not so devious,
And say plainly it's in a St. Paul park.
Buried in the snow, you might want to know
At least ten paces to the closest mark

Clue #2

If this hunt's taxing, maybe relaxing
Would be nice off in a warm floral home
But like the big fall where once they played ball
You will not be able to spot a dome.

Clue #3

Hunters get surly when hunts end early
Leaving them hardly time to sit and eat.
Yet a reminder, a two time finder,
Well you'll see that he has no time for cold feet

Clue #4

Prove you're not knaves where towers by graves
Loom ominously on the horizon
Don't focus on wealth, take care of your health
An ill body can cause you to wizen

Clue #5

If treasure you seek, make your move oblique
You can no longer go to the castle
To show expertise stay close to the trees
And finding the coin will seem quite facile.

Clue #6

Digging in the cold or panning for gold
Is a hard way to come by quick riches.
Pick up a guitar, become a rock star
Soon you’ll be surrounded by…ladies.

Clue #7

A great house of law is not made from straw
Yet the pulse of a building can be stilled
Its stones not eschewed, their purpose renewed
For here yet is land on which to rebuild.

Clue #8

With some derring-do and a fearless crew
You could find treasure out on the open sea
But you’ll come up short if too close to port
So go starboard and stick around for tea.

Clue #9

So where do you go with all of this snow?
You might be driving in circles by now.
Best look for a boat, one that does not float
And steer away from its snow covered bow

Clue #10

On a snowy night, by a street lamp’s light
From up on high we bid the coin adieu.
There will be no hints for we left no prints
You see, that night, the medallion, it flew.

My boss just coined a great way to describe a mock hunt. We can just call it a FUNT, as in Fake Hunt. I thought it was good. Thoughts?

 :sheepish: :lipsealed: :ooh:

good thing he didn't describe it as a counterfeit hunt

But the hunt isn't really fake. It's a real hunt, just on a smaller scale. The actual origination of the name had to do with the days when we used to go up to Fitgers in Duluth for their Bock Hunt. Since my hunt was between the Medallion hunt and the Bock Hunt I called it the Mock Hunt. And then the name kind of stuck.

Those Bock hunts at Fitger's were so much fun!

I'll bet $100 he won.

Actually, for the year he participated in that contest, he never won, but he had a whole bunch of fun trying.

This was the year we finally found him in his jalopy with all his "stuff". We missed him the first couple times we looked in there.

We had stopped in Moose Lake to have breakfast with a new friend. The picture was taken outside the Blue Bear Cafe. Rest in Peace Santa Dave and the Woodsman.

Terry, I remember that morning so well! We'd all agreed to meet at Santa Dave's, and he was going to ride up to Duluth with me.

We got there very early in the morning and we couldn't find Santa Dave!

We called his cell phone, knocked on his door, and checked in his car (looking through the windows) several times. We were honking our car horns, too, as I recall.

We were getting very, very worried.

Then, we looked again, and there he was, slumped way down in the driver's seat, surrounded by all the "stuff" he kept in his car.

We were so relieved to see him wake up!

What a crazy weekend.

We even added a Cooler Crew member that weekend - someone who went to Duluth with her father and came home with her mother, said Cooler Crew member subsequently born the following December!

Fitger's had a hunt? What.. why is this news to me? I love fitger's. I'm bummed because my favorite long sleeve tee was a fitgers shirt and it got ruined. I collect beer trays and am kicking myself on not obtaining a rare old fitger's tray that was on ebay about a year ago (I think it went for $90).

Do they still have a bock hunt? I might have to head up there.

That ended years ago if I recall. I think they tried it again in '08 but not sure what became of it after that.

I agree Fitgers is a cool place. So are the rooms and view

hmmmmm the ideas are flowing

I see the clues posted on the pp board but I don't see anyone posting ideas.

What do you think of the dome being the metrodome?

and the floral being the conservatory?

I have it narrowed to two parks based on the clues and what I have learned about Allison the last 12 years. Lol. I will see if this holds up for a few days.

thanks for the link -

I'm only set on 2 parks at the moment as well but that changes hour by hour ... and as we all said during the pp hunt, "there is so much snow" and don't have worry of it being found quickly.... so we better be out there searching early.

My analysis of clue number 2 was way too elaborate. I reviewed the history of past stadiums in St. Paul. I went to a lecture last summer. I have a friend who is the expert in that. Maybe this info will be useful for some future hunt. And yes, it's the dome. I was thinking there was another dome collapse in the TC, but I think I might have been imagining that.

The Allison Wonderland Mock Hunt medallion has not yet been found. At present we have 20 some people registered so we should end up with a prize of at least $300. If you have not registered yet, you can still do so in the next 24 hours, until clue 4 is released. Send it by Paypal to AllisonWondrland@yahoo.com or I can give you an address to send a check to.

Here is tonight's clue:

Clue #3

Hunters get surly when hunts end early

Leaving them hardly time to sit and eat.

Yet a reminder, a two time finder,

Well youÂ’ll see that he has no time for cold feet

And the previous clues:

Clue #2

You will not be able to spot a dome.

It seems the PP had trouble you see

Really?!?!?! Is Jake the only 2 time finder? No.

Through Allison's yahoo group.

have a question. why is this person continually recognized as a "2 time finder" when in fact the "1st find" was totally disqualified? Does that not negate the legitimacy of the "1st find"??? Honestly, I'm just baffled and would like clarification if anybody can provide - it was my understanding that some "questionable" activity was involved - please let me know - thank you.

I can think of a reason to go to the same park too, but I have a feeling I am barking up the wrong tree.

I feel a bit bad about her statement and the reception to her statement. I am not sure she knew. Still.... I hate to discourage outsiders from the play.

I am not sure I am of close enough mind to the collective to get this clue either. I see the repetition of surly.

Say, unrelated probably. I was watching that first Jake find video. What did you mean Jake about Surly being salt? Spanish for Sal? I don't get it for Hidden Falls. Just curious.
Mon, 02/07/2011 - 6:47 PM Permalink
Terry

I don't think this is about Jake. There are other two time finders.

I met Kirk Condie at Hidden Falls in 1993, clue 6 I think. It was the clue about the balls. He was very kind to me as it was my first serious hunt. He gave me this odd theory about certain parks coming up every 12 years. He had this funny paper book with all of the clues in it in his car. I can't remember the pattern and I don't recognize it looking at the history. I swear we were the only two down there that day.

Kirk was a really nice guy. The Phalen hunt, on a Sunday, there was snow falling and not many folks out hunting. I met up with a friend of ours from up north and eventually we went over to the rec center to warm up. Kirk came along and we had a really nice visit.

Seems like I saw him when the hunt was done at Crosby and that was the last time.

He died a couple years ago. He was only 57.

Ever see a picture in your mind related to how something used to look and you wish you could pluck it from your brain and print it out?

I'm doing some of that wishing right now.
